Usually, no: a PlayStation console without a compatible disc drive cannot read a physical game disc. Some newer PS5 Digital Edition models and PS5 Pro can use Sony’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1 disc drive, but the original PS5 Digital Edition (CFI-1000) cannot. Check your console’s model group before buying an add-on.
Which PlayStation consoles can play physical games?
The answer depends on whether the console has a disc drive built in or supports Sony’s detachable drive. “Digital Edition” alone is not enough to determine compatibility.

| Console | Can it play physical discs? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition, CFI-1000 model group | No | Sony says this model group does not support disc-based games or media. It has no supported add-on disc-drive route. PlayStation Support |
| Selected later PS5 Digital Edition models | Yes, with a compatible detachable drive | Sony’s product listing names CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups; its setup page describes CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups. Check the exact model and current local compatibility guidance before purchase. Sony’s product listing · Sony’s setup instructions |
| PS5 Pro | Yes, with a compatible detachable drive | Sony lists PS5 Pro as compatible with the CFI-ZDD1 drive. Confirm compatibility for your region and model before buying. Sony’s product listing |
| PS5 with a built-in disc drive | Yes | The disc-equipped PS5 plays supported PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray game discs. PlayStation 5 console information |
How to check whether your digital PS5 supports a disc drive
- Find the model number. Check the console’s label or packaging for its CFI model group; do not rely only on the “Digital Edition” name.
- Compare it with Sony’s current compatibility information. Sony’s product listing and setup page use overlapping but not identical model-group wording. Check both the exact model number and the official support page for your region.
- Buy the drive only if your model is listed. The official detachable drive is model CFI-ZDD1. Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive with the console during setup. See Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 listing.
Do not assume the drive can be added to every digital PS5: Sony explicitly says the CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support discs.

What discs can a compatible PS5 play?
Sony lists the CFI-ZDD1 drive as supporting PS5 game discs, supported PS4 titles, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD. This does not make every PlayStation disc generation compatible: Sony says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. Drive support details · Disc and media support.

PlayStation Disc Drive For PS5 Digital Edition Consoles (slim)
- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
PS4 discs on PS5: the important caveat
A supported PS4 game disc can be played on a PS5 with a disc drive, but the disc must remain inserted while you play. Sony says PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition unless that console has a supported disc-drive setup. Sony’s PS4 backward-compatibility guidance.

- You already own a compatible later digital PS5 or PS5 Pro: verify the CFI model group and regional support, then consider the CFI-ZDD1 add-on.
- You own a CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition: there is no supported disc-drive add-on route for this model. Use digital games on that console, or use a different disc-equipped PlayStation to play physical copies.
- You are buying a console and depend on physical games: choose a PS5 configuration with a built-in disc drive, or confirm that the exact digital model supports Sony’s detachable drive before purchasing.
Sony’s disc-equipped and all-digital PS5 configurations are described on its PS5 buying page.
