To set up a Google Pixel after switching phones, prepare and unlock your old device, follow the Pixel’s transfer prompts, activate your SIM or eSIM with your carrier, then personalize the Home screen and display. The process can copy a lot, but it is not a perfect clone: what moves depends on the source phone, apps, backups, Pixel model, Android version, and carrier.
Before you turn on your Pixel
Google Pixel Help says, “When you set up a new Pixel phone, the easiest way to transfer data is from your previous Android device or iPhone.” Before you start, back up the old phone and sync the accounts and apps you rely on. Keep both phones charged, nearby, unlocked when prompted, and connected to reliable Wi-Fi. Have the old phone’s screen-lock code ready.

- A USB-C to USB-C data-transfer cable is optional; a suitable cable you already own may work. Wireless transfer is available in supported cases, so a cable is not a universal requirement.
- Check available storage on the Pixel. A transfer can pause if the new phone runs out of space.
- If WhatsApp history matters, back it up in WhatsApp rather than assuming a general phone transfer will include it.
- Sign in with your Google Account to use Google services and restore Google backups or install apps later.

| Starting point | What to do | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Android phone | Choose the Android or Pixel source option during setup. Pixel 8 and later use a QR-code pairing flow and support wireless or cable transfer; older Pixel models use a separate “Copy apps & data” flow with cable or Wi-Fi options. | The source may need a recent Google Messages version set as its default messaging app. Some manufacturer-specific app data may not transfer. |
| iPhone | Follow the iPhone prompts during Pixel setup. Keep both phones unlocked and connected to reliable Wi-Fi or a compatible cable. Google recommends a cable for troubleshooting some transfers, particularly messages and apps. | Disable iMessage if new messages do not arrive on the Pixel. Some imported messages can take up to 24 hours to index and appear. |
| No old phone available | During setup, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to the Google Account used for the backup, secure the Pixel, select the old-device backup, choose data, and restore it. | A cloud restore covers backed-up data, not necessarily everything stored only on the old phone or inside apps. |
Google lists common transferable categories such as Google Account data, contacts, calendar events, messages and attachments, files, photos and videos, Wi-Fi details, call history, apps, and WhatsApp history. Conditions and exceptions apply. App downloads or purchases may transfer when they came from Google Play, but paid apps or apps unavailable on Google Play may not be available on the Pixel. Data held only in an app or manufacturer-specific service may also be left behind.
What may not come across from an iPhone
Google identifies in-app purchases, paid apps or apps unavailable on Google Play, DRM-protected music, Safari bookmarks, some settings such as Wi-Fi passwords, and app data that is not stored in the cloud as possible omissions. If photos seem missing, check whether they are in Google Photos or iCloud; Google documents a way to transfer iCloud photos to Google Photos. See Fix issues with data transfer on a new Pixel phone — iPhone & iPad.

Activate your SIM or eSIM
Pixel setup may offer to transfer a SIM or eSIM, but carrier support determines whether automatic transfer is available and what steps are required. Google’s automatic SIM-transfer requirements include Android 12 or later on both devices, current Google Play Services, and screen locks set up. If the prompt is unavailable or the eSIM does not activate, follow your carrier’s activation instructions or contact the carrier; a carrier-independent move is not guaranteed.
You can also start a supported SIM transfer later from Settings. For Google’s current instructions, see Transfer a SIM to a new phone.
Recover a transfer that was interrupted or missed
Pixel 9 and later
After initial setup, use Android Switch to add data from another device and merge it with data already on the Pixel. Google’s post-setup restore supports one previous device. To switch to a different source, you must reset the Pixel first, which erases its local data. Make a backup of anything newly saved to the Pixel before resetting.
Earlier Pixel models
Look for a “Finish setting up” notification or a setup prompt in Settings and use it while available. Google provides a limited window to resume unfinished setup on earlier models; after that window, repeating the initial transfer may require a factory reset, which erases data stored on the Pixel.

Messages or storage are the problem
- After an iPhone transfer, allow up to 24 hours for some messages to index. If they still do not appear, use the post-setup transfer route where supported.
- If a transfer stopped because the Pixel ran low on storage, free up space before retrying.
- If an Android transfer was interrupted, Android Switch may let you finish later.
