Yes—if that USB-C port carries both USB data and power. One cable can then run wired Android Auto, route music through the car’s infotainment system, and charge your phone at the same time. A charge-only port can power a phone but cannot carry Android Auto or USB audio. The port’s output, cable quality, vehicle software, and phone compatibility determine how well the setup works.
What one USB-C port can do
USB-C describes the connector shape, not the functions wired behind it. A vehicle may use the same connector for charging only, or it may connect that socket to the infotainment computer for data, media playback and smartphone integration. Check the owner’s manual, the label beside the socket, or the infotainment settings for terms such as “data,” “media,” “Android Auto,” “phone integration” or a smartphone icon.

When the port supports data, the USB cable creates a link between the phone and the vehicle. Android Auto uses that link to send the navigation interface, calls, messages and compatible app audio to the head unit. The phone also receives electrical power over the same cable. Music stored on a USB drive or played by a phone can therefore come through the car speakers while the phone charges.
A port marked “charging only” has power conductors but no connection to the infotainment system’s data interface. It can charge a phone, but Android Auto will not start and the car cannot browse USB audio from that socket. Some vehicles provide both kinds of port in the same cabin, so do not assume that every USB-C socket has identical capabilities.

How Android Auto, audio and charging share the cable
Android Auto is a data connection first
Google’s setup instructions require you to plug a USB cable into the vehicle’s USB port and the other end into your Android phone. The phone and head unit then negotiate an Android Auto session. Charging by itself does not provide that data path, so a phone may show a charging icon while Android Auto remains unavailable.
During a wired session, the infotainment system displays the Android Auto interface and plays supported app audio through the vehicle speakers. The phone handles much of the app processing, while the car supplies the screen, controls and sound output. Disconnecting the cable ends the wired session unless the vehicle also supports wireless Android Auto.
Music can come from two places
- Phone audio: Streaming or locally stored music played through an Android Auto-compatible app is sent over the Android Auto data connection.
- USB media: Some vehicles can read audio files from a USB flash drive. This capability is separate from Android Auto and depends on the car’s media software and supported file formats.
Honda’s 2024 Integra owner manual describes its 2.5A USB port as supporting device charging, audio-file playback and connection of compatible phones with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. That wording illustrates why the port’s documented role matters more than the USB-C label.

Charging continues while data is active
The same USB connection can supply power while transferring data. Charging speed is a separate question from whether Android Auto works. A port may successfully run Android Auto yet charge slowly, especially when the phone’s screen is bright, navigation and cellular data are active, or the battery is near full and the phone reduces current to protect it.
Charging-current figures: what they do and do not tell you
| Published figure | Source and context | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5A | Honda 2024 Integra owner manual, for a port specified for charging, audio files and compatible Android Auto | Shows the port’s stated current capability under the vehicle’s specified conditions; it is not a guaranteed wattage or phone charging speed. |
| 3.0A | Honda 2025 Pilot owner manual, for separate charging-only ports | A higher current rating does not make a port a data port. These sockets cannot run Android Auto or play music through the infotainment system. |
| At least 1.5A source current | Android Open Source Project Android 15 Compatibility Definition recommendation for host-mode charging | A platform-level recommendation for a host’s source current; it does not promise that a particular car or phone will charge at that rate. |
Amperage alone cannot predict the result. Voltage, USB power negotiation, the phone’s charging circuitry, cable resistance, temperature and battery state all affect delivered power. Treat the numbers as specifications for the port or compatibility requirement, not as a promise of a particular percentage gained per hour.
How to identify the correct vehicle port
- Read the port label. Look for “USB,” “media,” “data,” “Android Auto,” “CarPlay,” or an integration symbol. A lightning-bolt or battery symbol may indicate charging only, but labels vary by manufacturer.
- Check the owner’s manual. Find the USB-port or smartphone-integration section and note which socket is connected to the infotainment system. Manuals often distinguish a front data port from rear-seat charging ports.
- Inspect the infotainment menus. A media-source list that includes USB, or an Android Auto setup prompt, is evidence that the socket has data capability. The absence of a prompt is not conclusive if the cable or phone is incompatible.
- Test with a known data device. With the car parked, connect a USB flash drive containing supported audio files. If the infotainment system can browse it from that socket, the port is data-capable. Do not infer that a successful charge test proves data support.
Some vehicles use status lights to show the mode. Hyundai’s 2026 owner-manual guidance says that when the lower LED is illuminated, the port charges and sends data to the infotainment system, such as for listening to media on a USB memory drive. Use the exact indicator explanation for your model rather than assuming every LED has the same meaning.

The cable is part of the Android Auto connection
Use a short, undamaged USB-C cable designed for data, not a cable intended only for low-cost charging. Honda recommends a USB-IF-certified USB 2.0 cable for Android Auto. USB 2.0 is sufficient for Android Auto’s normal data requirements and can be more reliable than an unmarked cable of unknown construction.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Choose the connector that matches both ends: USB-C to USB-C when the vehicle has USB-C, or USB-C to USB-A when the vehicle’s data socket is USB-A.
- Avoid excessive length, loose plugs, crushed sections and cables with intermittent charging. Movement around the center console can interrupt the data link.
- If Android Auto repeatedly disconnects, replace the cable before changing phone settings. A cable can deliver power while its data conductors are damaged.
- Keep a second certified data cable available for troubleshooting; testing with another cable separates a wiring fault from a vehicle or phone fault.
Will a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter work?
It can, when the vehicle’s USB-A socket is the data-enabled Android Auto port and the adapter preserves USB data lines. Use a quality adapter specified for in-car use, and connect it to a proper data cable. An adapter that is wired for charging only will produce the same symptom as a charge-only port: the phone charges but Android Auto does not appear.
Hyundai warns in its 2026 owner-manual material that charging performance may be reduced when an adapter is used and advises a quality, vehicle-specified adapter. The adapter adds another connector and another possible failure point, so a single cable with the correct plug is preferable when available. Do not treat an adapter as a way to turn a charging-only USB-A socket into a data port; it cannot add missing vehicle electronics.

Set up wired Android Auto through the port
- Park the vehicle. Put the car in Park and turn on the infotainment system. Initial pairing and permission prompts should be handled while stationary.
- Enable phone prerequisites. Install or update Android Auto as required by your phone’s Android version, turn on Bluetooth for the initial handshake when requested, and allow the permissions Android Auto asks for.
- Connect to the data port. Plug the certified data cable into the vehicle socket identified for Android Auto, then connect the phone. Avoid using a rear-seat charging socket unless the manual identifies it as a data port.
- Accept prompts on both screens. Unlock the phone and approve Android Auto, contacts, notification and other requested permissions. Some vehicles require selecting Android Auto from the source list after the cable is connected.
- Start audio from an approved app. Select a compatible music app on the Android Auto screen, or choose the vehicle’s USB-media source if you are playing files from a flash drive.
- Verify charging behavior. Confirm that the phone shows charging while the Android Auto interface is active. A slow charge is a power-capability issue, not proof that the data connection failed.
Compatibility is two-sided: the vehicle’s infotainment system must support Android Auto, and the phone must meet Google’s current Android Auto requirements. A data-capable port and good cable cannot overcome an unsupported head unit or phone.
What to do when the phone charges but Android Auto does not
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Phone charges; no Android Auto prompt | Wrong socket or charge-only port | Move the cable to the manual-designated data port and confirm the port’s role. |
| Android Auto starts, then disconnects | Damaged, loose or low-quality data cable | Try a short USB-IF-certified USB 2.0 cable and check both connectors for debris or looseness. |
| USB-A adapter charges but carries no data | Adapter or cable lacks data wiring | Use a known data-capable adapter and cable; replace the adapter if the vehicle still sees only power. |
| Vehicle never offers Android Auto | Phone or vehicle incompatibility, disabled permissions or outdated software | Confirm compatibility, unlock the phone, accept setup prompts and review Android Auto settings on both devices. |
| Android Auto works but battery percentage falls | Port output is lower than the phone’s active demand | Reduce screen brightness and heat, avoid intensive phone use, or use a higher-output charging-only socket if you do not need wired Android Auto at that moment. |
| Music plays from the phone speaker | Android Auto session or vehicle audio source is not selected | Open Android Auto, choose the music app, and set the infotainment source to Android Auto or USB as appropriate. |
When a replacement cable and the correct port produce the same result, disconnect other USB devices, restart the phone and infotainment system, and repeat setup with the phone unlocked. If the vehicle has a separate USB media setting, make sure it is not waiting for a different source. Persistent failures after these checks require the vehicle maker’s compatibility or service support because the problem may be firmware, a damaged socket or a head-unit fault.
Wired versus wireless Android Auto
| Consideration | Wired Android Auto | Wireless Android Auto |
|---|---|---|
| Port usage | Occupies the data-capable USB port | Leaves the USB port free after wireless setup |
| Charging | Charges over the same cable, subject to the port’s output | Does not charge the phone unless you use a separate charger or charging pad |
| Requirements | Compatible vehicle, phone and certified data cable | Compatible vehicle and phone, plus the wireless pairing process documented by the vehicle maker |
| Typical failure points | Wrong port, damaged cable, adapter or USB data-mode issue | Bluetooth/Wi-Fi pairing, compatibility and wireless interference |
Google documents wireless Android Auto for compatible vehicles and phones. Confirm support with the vehicle manufacturer before buying or relying on a wireless setup. Wireless mode solves the problem of occupying the wired data port, but it does not provide wired charging; use a separate charger if the battery must gain charge during the drive.

Choosing the right solution for your car
- One USB-C data port and USB-C phone: Use a certified USB-C-to-USB-C data cable. This is the simplest way to combine Android Auto, music and charging.
- Data port is USB-A: Use a quality USB-C-to-USB-A data cable, or a vehicle-specified data-capable adapter with a certified cable. Expect possible charging-performance reduction with an adapter.
- Only charging ports are available: Those sockets can charge the phone but cannot run wired Android Auto or USB audio. Use the vehicle’s documented data port, if one exists, or investigate compatible wireless Android Auto.
- Need maximum charging rather than Android Auto: A higher-rated charging-only port may charge faster, but switching to it ends the wired Android Auto data connection.
The useful comparison is not simply USB-C versus USB-A. Check, in order, whether the port supports data, whether Android Auto is wired or wireless, what current and charging protocol the vehicle provides, which connector is present, whether the cable is certified and durable, and whether both the vehicle and phone are compatible.
Safety and reliability checks
- Make connections while parked and keep the cable routed so it cannot interfere with steering, pedals or the gear selector.
- Do not force a USB-C plug or use a connector with visible damage. A loose connection can repeatedly reset Android Auto and wear the socket.
- Keep the phone out of direct sun and remove heavy insulation if it becomes hot. Thermal protection can reduce or stop charging even when data continues.
- Use the car’s voice controls and mounted phone position in compliance with local driving laws; do not handle the phone while moving.
In short, a single car USB-C port can handle all three jobs when it is a documented data-and-power port and the cable is a genuine data cable. The USB-C shape alone proves none of those capabilities, and a higher amperage rating cannot compensate for missing data wiring.
