Can You Pause, Skip, or Speed Up Time in Simulation Games?

Yes—but there is no universal simulation-game time button. Each title defines its own pause scope, speed levels, multiplayer rules, and ways to advance the clock. The Sims 4 gives you explicit pause, regular, fast, and ultra speeds; RimWorld offers pause plus several simulation speeds; and Stardew Valley pauses in many single-player situations but usually keeps running in multiplayer. “Skip” normally means sleeping, completing an event transition, or using a title-specific debug or mod command rather than pressing one standard fast-forward key.

Pause, speed up, and skip are different actions

Before looking for a setting, identify which result you want. A pause sets simulation time to zero while you decide what to do. A speed control changes the rate at which the simulation advances; it does not jump to a particular hour or day. A skip moves the game to a later state, usually through sleep, an event transition, or a debug/mod command.

A useful technical model is a time scale. Unity’s 2025 manual uses 2.0 to represent twice-real-time progression and 0.5 for half-speed progression. Game interfaces may label those values “2x,” “fast,” or something else, and many simulations cap the scale or slow it when the computer cannot keep up. A button labeled “5x,” therefore, is often a target rate rather than a guaranteed frame rate.

How the main controls compare

Game Pause control and scope Player-facing speed levels Normal clock or capacity Ways to skip or advance Important limitation
The Sims 4 Pause: P, 0, or `. The same pause command is shown in the camera guide as 0. 1 regular/normal, 2 fast/medium, 3 ultra/fast. Not stated in the cited control references. Use ordinary in-game actions such as sleeping or waiting for an event; no universal skip key is listed in the cited controls. Key bindings and behavior can vary by platform, camera mode, patch, or custom content.
RimWorld Pause is available from the time-speed control in the lower-right interface. Normal, 3x, and 5x are documented player-facing choices. One day is 60,000 ticks and lasts about 16.67 real minutes at 1x. Use normal colony actions or a title-specific mod/debug feature; the standard time control changes rate rather than jumping to a date. CPU load, colony complexity, and other technical factors can prevent the simulation from reaching the selected target, especially at higher speeds.
Stardew Valley In single-player, menus, dialogue, cutscenes, and some animations pause the clock. Opening the player menu automatically pauses outside multiplayer. No general player-facing 2x/3x clock control is documented in the cited references. About 0.7 real seconds per in-game minute. Sleep and event transitions advance the day. With debug access, documented commands include pausetime, addhour, addminute, day, and time. In multiplayer, time generally continues through menus and dialogue; only specific conditions pause it.

The values above describe the cited game documentation, not every simulation title. Patches, mods, edition differences, and platform input schemes can change the result.

The Sims 4: explicit pause and three acceleration levels

Pause or resume the simulation

Electronic Arts’ control reference lists “Pause game — P / 0 / `.” The camera guide presents the same pattern in camera mode as “0 – Pause.” Press one of those supported keys to stop the household, then press the pause command again or select the on-screen control to resume. If a key does nothing, use the visible time controls: keyboard layouts, console bindings, and camera context can differ.

Choose regular, fast, or ultra speed

The same official reference lists “Regular/fast/ultra speed — 1 / 2 / 3.” The camera guide describes these as “1 – Normal speed,” “2 – Medium speed,” and “3 – Fast speed.” Press 1 when you need ordinary real-time behavior, 2 to compress routine actions, and 3 for the fastest available player-facing mode. The game may reduce or override speed during certain interactions, transitions, or events; that is different from the control failing.

What this means for everyday play

The Sims 4 is the clearest choice among these examples if your priority is a visible, direct time scale. You can stop a Sim while queuing actions, accelerate repetitive skill practice or household work, and return to normal speed before a conversation or event where timing matters. The controls alter the simulation rate; they do not provide a general “jump to tomorrow” command.

RimWorld: pause, issue orders, and target 3x or 5x

Find the time-speed control

RimWorld places time controls in the lower-right corner of the interface. The documented choices are pause, normal speed, 3x, and 5x. Pausing is useful when a raid, medical emergency, fire, or work-priority change requires several orders before the simulation resumes.

Understand ticks and the 1x baseline

A RimWorld day contains 60,000 ticks and lasts about 16.67 real minutes at 1x, according to the game’s time documentation. That baseline lets you estimate routine scheduling: a full in-game day at 3x takes roughly one third of that real-time duration when the simulation can sustain the target. The estimate is a time-scale calculation, not a promise about loading, menus, animations, or a busy colony.

Why 5x may look slower than 5x

The time documentation says the speed controls attempt to multiply the rate at which game time progresses. Machine performance and other technical factors can prevent the simulation from reaching its target, with the limitation more visible at higher speeds. A large colony, many pawns, extensive pathfinding, weather calculations, or modded systems can all increase the work required per tick.

  • If the game stutters at 5x, drop to 3x or normal speed before diagnosing anything else.
  • Pause during combat or construction planning rather than relying on a high speed to catch up.
  • Compare behavior in a new, unmodded colony. If the target is reached there but not in the mature save, simulation complexity is a likely factor.
  • Close competing applications and check whether the computer is CPU-limited; a faster graphics card alone may not remove a simulation bottleneck.

These steps improve the chance of reaching the selected rate, but the interface still cannot guarantee a fixed real-time multiplier.

Stardew Valley: menus pause alone, not usually in multiplayer

Single-player behavior

The Stardew Valley documentation describes a clock rate of about 0.7 real seconds per in-game minute. In a single-player session, the clock pauses in menus, dialogue, cutscenes, and some animations. The player-menu documentation specifically says opening the menu automatically pauses gameplay except in multiplayer. This lets you inspect inventory, read information, or choose a tool without losing in-game minutes in the supported situations.

Why opening a menu may not stop time

If you are playing online, assume the opposite: the world generally continues while a player has a menu or dialogue box open. The multiplayer documentation lists narrower exceptions, including a host-issued /pause, certain festivals, and split-screen situations in which all players are in menus or cutscenes. One player’s inventory screen should not be treated as a global pause for everyone.

For the documented multiplayer rules, see Stardew Valley’s multiplayer documentation. It is the appropriate reference when a patch or platform changes an exception.

Advance a day through normal play

Stardew Valley’s normal “skip” is a state transition: finish the day and sleep. Festivals, cutscenes, and other events can also move the calendar forward without offering a general speed slider. This is fundamentally different from pressing 2x or 3x while walking around town.

Debug and console commands

Documented debug commands include pausetime, addhour, addminute, day, and time. They can pause or move the clock when debug access is available, but they are version- and platform-dependent tools, not universal controls in an ordinary unmodified session. Before using one, make a backup of the save and verify that the command is supported by your current edition and setup; a command that works on PC may not be exposed on a console build.

Does multiplayer stop the clock?

There is no genre-wide answer. Multiplayer commonly changes pause scope because one player’s pause would otherwise freeze every participant. Use this checklist before assuming a menu is safe:

  • Who owns the simulation? A host-controlled pause may affect everyone, while a local menu may affect only the player who opened it.
  • What screen is open? Inventory, dialogue, map, cutscene, and festival screens can have different rules.
  • Are all players in a pause-eligible state? Split-screen games may pause only when every player is in a qualifying menu or cutscene.
  • Is the session online or local? Network synchronization often favors a continuously running clock.

In the examples here, The Sims 4 and RimWorld are primarily presented around their direct local time controls, while Stardew Valley explicitly narrows pausing in multiplayer. Always check the title’s multiplayer documentation for the current patch.

What “skip time” usually means

Sleep or rest

Life and farming simulations often advance to the next morning when the character sleeps. This is a calendar transition with consequences: energy, crops, quests, NPC schedules, and daily resets may all update. It is not equivalent to briefly running the world at high speed.

Event or travel transition

Entering a festival, completing a cutscene, traveling, or finishing a scripted sequence can move the simulation to a later state. The game decides the destination and what is processed during the transition.

Debug, console, or mod command

Commands can expose direct clock changes, but they may be disabled, platform-limited, changed by patches, or incompatible with achievements and saves. Treat them as administrative tools. Record the original time, keep a backup, and test on a disposable save before using them in a long-running world.

A practical method for any simulation game

  1. Identify the mode. Note single-player, online multiplayer, split-screen, platform, edition, and whether mods are installed.
  2. Look for the time widget. Pause and speed controls are often grouped near the clock, lower-right HUD, or action bar.
  3. Test pause safely. Pause while standing somewhere harmless, open the menu, wait several real seconds, and check whether the in-game clock changed.
  4. Test each speed level. Use a visible clock, animation, or progress bar. Confirm that “fast” changes simulation time rather than merely camera or animation playback.
  5. Check multiplayer rules. Have every player observe the clock while one player opens a menu; do not assume the local result is global.
  6. Search for a legitimate skip path. Look for sleep, “end day,” event completion, or an official debug reference before installing an unverified mod.
  7. Measure performance at the target speed. If the game slows at 3x or 5x, lower the setting and test with fewer entities or mods before concluding that the control is broken.

Common problems and fixes

The game keeps running when a menu is open

First check multiplayer status. In Stardew Valley, this is expected in most multiplayer menus and dialogue. In a single-player game, the screen may not be a pause-eligible menu, or a mod may have altered the behavior. Use the on-screen pause control rather than relying on window focus.

The speed key does nothing

Confirm that the game window has focus, the key is not remapped, and you are not in a screen that suppresses time controls. Test the visible HUD control, then consult the current platform’s key-bindings page. Camera mode can also display a different labeling pattern even when the underlying Sims controls are the same.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The selected speed is not reached

In RimWorld, this is a documented performance limitation, not necessarily a defective setting. Reduce the target speed, pause during intensive events, remove or update heavy mods, and compare with a smaller colony. A simulation can remain logically correct while running below its requested real-time multiplier.

A clock command is unavailable

Debug commands depend on version, platform, and access settings. Do not substitute a random command from another edition. Verify the command name, enablement method, and save-backup procedure for the exact build you are running.

How to choose a simulation with the time controls you want

Your priority What to verify before playing Best fit among these examples
One-key pause and obvious acceleration Dedicated pause plus normal, fast, and ultra levels The Sims 4
Pause to plan, then accelerate a complex colony Multiple simulation rates and a clear performance warning RimWorld
Automatic single-player menu pauses Pause scope for menus, dialogue, cutscenes, and animations Stardew Valley
Safe online co-op pausing Host command, unanimous pause conditions, and menu exceptions Check the specific multiplayer rules; no universal winner is established here.
Jump directly to a chosen hour or day Official sleep, event, console, or debug support Stardew Valley documents clock commands when debug access is available; verify your platform first.

Bottom line

Pause and speed controls are common in simulation games, but their scope is title- and mode-specific. Choose The Sims 4 for explicit regular, fast, and ultra controls, RimWorld for pause-plus-3x/5x colony management with a real performance ceiling, and Stardew Valley for automatic single-player pauses and sleep-based day advancement. For multiplayer or direct clock jumps, read the exact game’s current documentation instead of assuming that opening a menu—or pressing a generic fast-forward key—will stop everyone or skip the day.
