Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 Windows 11 update notes document a setting for moving the taskbar to the top, left, or right edge of the screen, as well as keeping it at the bottom. The feature is rolling out gradually, so the setting may not appear on every PC yet.
How to move the taskbar
- Open Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors.
- Open Taskbar position and choose Top, Left, Right, or Bottom.
The position control is available when Microsoft has delivered the feature to your device. Its August 27, 2026 preview update notes identify Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, with update builds 26100.9278 and 26200.9278, respectively. Those build references identify the update notes; they do not establish that every PC running either version already has the control.

What differs by taskbar position
Microsoft says the search box and the smaller taskbar option are supported only when the taskbar is at the top or bottom. Tooltips, flyouts, and animations continue to work in the other positions. Most customization settings—including never combining taskbar icons—also work in all positions.

If “Taskbar position” is missing
Microsoft describes the feature as a gradual rollout, meaning devices receive it over time. A missing control may therefore reflect update or rollout availability; it does not, by itself, show that something is wrong with your PC. The update notes do not determine the rollout status or installed update on an individual device.
Why Microsoft’s help pages appear to disagree
Microsoft’s general taskbar customization page still says there are no settings for moving the taskbar to the top or side. Its more recent, dated August 27, 2026 Windows 11 KB5120998 preview update notes specifically document the new position setting. The dated update notes are the more specific source for this feature, and Microsoft’s taskbar accessibility overview also describes moving the bar to the top, left, or right. The general customization page has not been reconciled with that newer guidance.
