For a straightforward conversion, use LibreOffice’s soffice command in headless mode:
mkdir -p csv-output
soffice --headless --convert-to csv --outdir csv-output workbook.xlsxReplace workbook.xlsx with your file’s path. CSV is a plain-text table format, not a complete copy of an Excel workbook: ordinary export saves a sheet rather than preserving every worksheet, formula, format, or workbook feature. Check the output before using it.

Convert an Excel file with LibreOffice
LibreOffice Calc can export spreadsheets from the Linux terminal with soffice --headless --convert-to. The --headless option runs without opening the graphical interface, and --outdir specifies where to place the converted file. See LibreOffice’s CSV filter parameters for the export syntax and available options.

Create an output directory if needed:
mkdir -p csv-output. -
Run the conversion, substituting your workbook’s name or path:
soffice --headless --convert-to csv --outdir csv-output workbook.xlsx. -
Inspect the generated CSV, especially if the workbook contains multiple sheets, formulas, dates, or non-English text.

The output is written to the directory named by --outdir. For ordinary CSV export, LibreOffice saves the current sheet; it does not combine all worksheets into one CSV. If you need every worksheet, the CSV filter supports exporting sheets as separate CSV files or selecting a sheet. Those options produce separate sheet exports, not one merged table. Choose what the CSV should contain
Formula text or calculated values
Decide whether the recipient needs formula expressions or the values calculated from them. LibreOffice documents options for exporting either formulas or values in its guide to exporting formula expressions and values. If results matter, ensure formulas have recalculated as expected and check representative cells in the exported file.
Separators, quotes, and encoding
CSV fields are separated by a delimiter—often a comma, though semicolons or tabs may be used. A field containing the chosen delimiter needs quoting so it remains one field when another application reads the file. Match the field separator and text delimiter to the receiving application’s expectations. Encoding also matters: choose one the receiving program supports, then check accented letters and other non-ASCII characters after export. LibreOffice’s filter parameters document the relevant export settings; there is no single encoding that is correct for every receiving tool.

Formatting and workbook features
CSV stores cell content in delimited text form; it does not carry spreadsheet formatting or the full workbook structure. Keep the original Excel file if you need its formatting, formulas as editable spreadsheet formulas, or other workbook features. The LibreOffice CSV guide explains this loss of workbook information.
Use Python and pandas for a repeatable workflow
If conversion is part of a data-cleaning or batch-processing script, pandas lets you read a worksheet into a DataFrame and write it to CSV. For example:

frame.to_csv("output.csv", index=False)This example selects the first worksheet and omits the DataFrame index from the output. The required Excel-reading engine depends on the input file format and installed packages; check the pandas I/O documentation for supported formats and engines. For a workbook with several sheets, select and export each one deliberately rather than assuming one CSV will include them all.

Before relying on a pandas conversion, check whether type inference, dates, leading zeros, formula values, and missing values are appropriate for the next program. Reading into a DataFrame and writing back to CSV is a data-processing workflow, not a guarantee that Excel’s display or calculation behavior will be reproduced exactly.

If the conversion does not work as expected

No CSV appears: Confirm the input path and output directory, and read the specific error printed by

Rows or data are missing: Check whether the workbook has additional worksheets. A regular CSV export represents a sheet, not the whole multi-sheet workbook.

Values differ from what you see in Excel: Check whether formulas were exported as expressions or calculated values, and whether formula results had recalculated before export.

Text is split into extra columns or displays incorrectly: Verify the field delimiter, text delimiter, and encoding against the receiving application’s settings.
