Test mesh Wi-Fi in two layers: check each satellite’s connection to the main router, then measure the Wi-Fi experience where you actually use it. A mesh app’s test evaluates links between mesh points; it does not certify coverage in every room. For a useful comparison, keep the device, test locations and conditions consistent, and repeat the checks after each placement change.
How to test mesh Wi-Fi coverage
- Choose repeatable locations. Include the main router, each satellite, rooms where service matters, and known weak spots. Use the same phone or laptop in the same position for each round.
- Check satellite links in the mesh app. Look for each wireless node’s connection to its upstream node. In Google Home, go to Home → Wi-Fi → Points → Test mesh; Google says this test measures the connection between the primary point and additional points, and requires multiple mesh points. Menu names and available metrics vary by system and app version. Google’s mesh test guide explains the test. Linksys also documents a node screen that displays a wireless child node’s signal strength. Linksys RSSI guidance.
- Measure performance at client locations. At each point, record RSSI if available, download and upload speeds, latency, and whether ordinary use—such as loading pages or maintaining a call—is stable. A speed test is a snapshot, not a coverage map. Linksys describes its speed test as measuring download, upload and ping/latency. Linksys speed test guidance.
- Separate Wi-Fi problems from internet problems. If possible, compare Wi-Fi results with a wired test at the router. Pause large downloads and backups, and repeat tests under similar conditions. Linksys recommends a wired comparison to help identify whether the internet connection or Wi-Fi is the limiting factor. Linksys speed test guidance.
- Check whether the problem follows the device. Test a second client in the same location. If only one device performs poorly, investigate its Wi-Fi capability or roaming behavior before relocating every node. Linksys recommends trying another device when troubleshooting. Linksys RSSI guidance.
- Change one node position, then repeat. Move a weakly connected satellite somewhat closer to its upstream node, keep it in an open position, and run the mesh test and client checks again. Changing one position at a time makes it easier to tell what helped.
How to interpret signal strength
RSSI, or received signal strength indicator, is commonly shown in dBm. The values are negative; a value closer to zero generally indicates a stronger signal. Linksys labels 0 to -50 dBm excellent and -70 dBm or below poor in its mesh guidance. These are Linksys-specific guideposts, not universal thresholds for every router, client, band or measurement app. Linksys RSSI guidance.

Google describes a Nest/Google alert when a point’s average signal has been below -77 dBm over the last 24 hours. That is the condition for the manufacturer’s alert, not a general pass/fail rule for all mesh systems. Google placement guidance.

Google notes that a point may alternate between “weak connection” and “good connection” when speed-test results are close to the boundary; if results remain inconsistent, its guidance is to move the point closer. - More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
What to compare between tests
When comparing two positions or a before-and-after change, record the same measures at the same locations:
- Mesh app’s node-to-node or backhaul quality.
- Client RSSI, if your device or app provides it.
- Download, upload and latency results.
- Connection stability, drops and how repeatable the result is.
- Whether a second device behaves differently.
There is no established universal RSSI or speed threshold that guarantees good coverage. Judge results against the uses that matter in your home and the guidance for your particular mesh system. Google mesh test guidance; Linksys RSSI and speed test guidance.

Fix weak coverage or a weak satellite link
If the satellite’s backhaul is weak
A node at the edge of a dead zone may have a poor connection to the rest of the mesh and simply repeat a weak link. Move it partway toward the primary node while still aiming to serve the problem area, then rerun the mesh test. Google recommends placing a point partway toward the weak-coverage area rather than in the dead zone itself. It also recommends an open location and, where possible, no more than two rooms between points. Google point placement guidance.
If the backhaul is strong but a room still performs poorly
Test another client, check for nearby obstructions or interference, and compare with wired internet performance. A strong node link does not by itself show that every client location has a good signal or reliable performance.

Try a different location or backhaul method
Keep mesh devices in open positions and away from dense walls, metal and appliances. TP-Link’s Deco guidance recommends experimenting with unit locations and checking inter-unit signal in the app. It describes wired Ethernet backhaul as more stable and faster than wireless backhaul for its products; Ethernet is an option, not a prerequisite for testing. TP-Link Deco placement guidance.
If careful placement does not resolve the problem, a compatible additional point may be an option. Check compatibility with your mesh model before buying; a new system is not needed just to follow the tests above.
