Sometimes—but exporting a visual-builder site usually transfers files, not a complete working service. You may get HTML, CSS, JavaScript and media, while the CMS data, accounts, forms, search, checkout or other platform-dependent features stay behind. The exact boundary depends on the builder, so check both what you can export and what the exported site still needs to work.
Static and dynamic describe how a site gets its content
A static page’s content is edited directly on the page or in its files. A dynamic page draws content from a data source and can change according to that data or context—for example, a CMS record, the current page or a selected locale. A blog template that displays different posts from a collection is a typical dynamic-content pattern. Webflow’s explanation of static and dynamic content and Wix’s overview describe these distinctions.

Static does not mean a page has no JavaScript, animation or interaction. Dynamic does not necessarily mean a complex custom application. For export decisions, the useful question is whether the content or behavior depends on connected data or a service that the exported files do not include.
What exported files can—and cannot—do
An export may contain the front end: the files a browser uses to display a site. That can be enough for pages whose content and behavior are self-contained. But a database, account system or server-side process is not recreated merely because the exported pages look right. A visual match is not proof that forms submit, search returns results, checkout works or restricted pages remain protected.

Webflow: a file export with important exclusions
According to Webflow’s code-export documentation, updated October 31, 2025, paid Workspace plans can export a ZIP containing HTML, CSS, JavaScript and assets such as images; export is not included on Site plans. This is an export of front-end files, not a complete transfer of every Webflow feature.
Webflow says exported code does not include CMS content or functionality, user accounts, ecommerce databases or functionality, localized pages and content beyond the primary locale, or code components. CMS collection lists may be empty, and fields tied to CMS content may have no content. Site search and forms—including file upload and reCAPTCHA—will not work as expected; password protection will no longer protect pages. Webflow says third-party forms or integrations are needed to collect submissions from an exported site. Check the current export documentation for the complete, feature-specific details.

Webflow says exported code can be edited and hosted elsewhere without maintaining a Webflow plan, but manual edits can break components. It also notes that Lottie JSON files do not load from a local file system and need to be served from a web server to work as expected. A local preview therefore may not be a reliable test of every feature.

Framer: no HTML export for self-hosting
Framer’s help page, updated September 15, 2026, states: “Framer does not offer HTML export for self-hosting.” It explains that published sites rely on services such as pre-rendering, image optimization, font subsetting, server-side rendering, delivery and caching. That is Framer’s stated policy, not a rule for every builder. See Framer’s export and self-hosting guidance for its current position.

Wix: a Headless upload path, not a general Editor export
Wix says sites are static by default, while CMS collections can power dynamic pages and elements. Separately, its Wix Headless instructions for uploading a static site describe uploading HTML, CSS, JavaScript and assets, then connecting that front end to Wix business solutions. Wix says Wix Headless is not currently available to all users. This specific upload route should not be mistaken for a general-purpose export of a Wix Editor site; check eligibility and the workflow that applies to your account.
Audit dependencies before choosing another host
Make a feature-by-feature inventory rather than judging portability from screenshots. For each item, record whether it must keep working, what data or service it depends on, and what will replace that dependency after the move.

- Content: CMS records, collection relationships, templates and any content tied to locale or page context.
- People and commerce: account data, products, orders, checkout and any related business logic.
- Visitor actions: forms, file uploads, search, password restrictions and other interactive features.
- Platform-specific elements: code components, integrations, animations and features that rely on the builder’s hosted services.
- Replacement plan: the new host, backend or third-party service for each feature that is not included in the export.
For every required function, identify a replacement before moving. Hosting the files alone will not restore omitted records, submissions, accounts or access controls. Then test the exported project on a web server and verify each important visitor journey, including submitting a form, searching, signing in and completing a purchase where relevant.

An export from one platform is not necessarily an importable project for another. Webflow’s migration overview, updated May 12, 2026, says migration into Webflow from Wix, Squarespace, WordPress or Framer has no automated conversion; its process involves manually recreating layouts, styles, CMS structure and interactions. That describes migration into Webflow, not every possible platform pairing, but it illustrates why a migration budget should include reconstruction and testing—not just hosting.

How to decide whether an export is enough
- Confirm eligibility and format. Check your current plan and the platform’s official documentation for whether export is available and exactly which files and data it includes.
- List the features the site must retain. Include content collections, accounts, commerce, forms, search, password protection, localization and platform-specific components.
- Map every dependency to a replacement. Decide where each necessary function and its data will live after the move. If a feature has no workable replacement, the export alone is not a complete migration.
- Estimate the rebuild and test effort. Include recreating layouts and interactions, transferring or reconstructing content, connecting services and checking real user flows on the destination host.
- Test the result in its intended environment. Use a web server, not only a local-file preview, and verify both appearance and behavior before switching visitors over.
If your site is self-contained and the builder provides portable files, a static host may be sufficient. If it depends on hosted CMS records, accounts, forms, checkout or other services, plan a backend replacement or a rebuild; an export is only one part of that work.
