What Does It Cost to Monitor a Node.js Health Endpoint in 2026?

Monitoring a Node.js health endpoint can cost nothing extra for some Route 53 checks—or more than the check fee once optional features, telemetry, alerts, and cost-reporting queries are included. First decide what the endpoint proves: a running process, readiness to receive traffic, or a public route working as a user expects. Then count the checks and assign direct and shared charges using a consistent rule.

What should a Node.js health endpoint prove?

Separate three questions that are often collapsed into one:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Liveness: Is the Node.js process functioning, such that restarting it might help if it is not?
  • Readiness: Can this instance accept work right now?
  • External availability: Can a checker reach the public route and receive the response your users need?

These checks serve different operational purposes. An external HTTP check does not establish that every replica is ready, and a process-liveness response does not establish that the public service is reachable. AWS EKS uses separate /healthz and /readyz examples for process health and readiness; those are Kubernetes platform examples, not a universal Node.js convention. AWS EKS application best practices.

Keep readiness checks deliberate

A readiness handler can report whether an instance can accept work, but avoid making it a reflexive deep check of every dependency. AWS EKS guidance warns that tying readiness to a shared external dependency such as a database can cause replicas to become unready together when that dependency fails. That warning is specifically Kubernetes guidance; apply it in the context of your platform’s traffic and recovery behavior. AWS EKS application best practices.

Choose what an external check validates

Route 53 endpoint checks support HTTP, HTTPS, and TCP. A TCP check establishes a connection; HTTP or HTTPS checks can validate a response and optionally search its body for a specified string. AWS documents a 5,120-byte search window for that body check. HTTPS checks can enable SNI. Pick a check that proves the user-facing condition you care about rather than treating every successful connection as proof that the application works. Amazon Route 53 health checks.

How often should the monitor check?

Route 53 offers 30-second and 10-second intervals. AWS documentation says a 30-second setting averages about one request every two seconds, while the 10-second setting sends more than one request per second. Independent health checkers do not coordinate, so requests may arrive in bursts with quiet gaps; the average is not a smooth cadence. How Amazon Route 53 checks endpoint health.

Faster polling can shorten the time before a failure is noticed, but it increases request volume and AWS says fast checks cost extra. The actual detection time also depends on the consecutive-failure threshold and checker behavior, so an interval alone does not define the alert delay. Choose the interval and threshold against the service’s detection needs and the load and cost you can accept. How Amazon Route 53 checks endpoint health.

Estimate monthly request volume

For one endpoint and one checker configuration, use this planning formula:

observed average checks per second × 60 × 60 × 24 × days in billing period

Use observed request logs when available. For multiple endpoints, multiply by the endpoint count and account for each checker population if the provider charges by checker or region. This estimates traffic, not a Route 53 invoice; bursts mean the documented average should not be mistaken for evenly spaced requests.

What belongs in the monitoring bill?

Amazon Route 53 pricing, checked in 2026, lists up to 50 health checks for qualifying AWS endpoints at no additional cost. Its listed basic-check prices are $0.50 per check per month for AWS endpoints and $0.75 for non-AWS endpoints. Listed optional feature charges are $1.00 or $2.00 per check per month, depending on endpoint class; partial months are prorated. Eligibility depends on AWS’s definition of an endpoint and its account relationship, and pricing and offer terms can change, so confirm the current scope before budgeting. Amazon Route 53 pricing.

The check fee is only one part of the cost model. Record these items for each endpoint:

  • Endpoint category and whether it qualifies for an included allowance.
  • Basic check charge, interval, checker scope, and selected optional features.
  • CloudWatch metrics and alarms, plus SNS notifications if configured.
  • Cost Explorer API requests or other billing queries used by automated attribution.
  • Any shared monitoring infrastructure and the rule used to allocate its charge.

Include telemetry and alerts

Route 53 sends health-check metrics to CloudWatch once per minute. Metrics include status, the percentage of checkers reporting healthy, TCP connection time, SSL handshake time, and time to first byte. CloudWatch can alarm on these metrics; AWS notes that notifications can take several minutes after a health check fails. Do not assume the Route 53 check price includes every related telemetry or notification charge. Monitoring health checks with CloudWatch and Amazon CloudWatch pricing.

Count billing-query requests if you automate attribution

AWS Cost Explorer pricing lists $0.01 per API request using the primary billing view and $0.01 per source for custom billing views. Include query volume when a scheduled job uses the API to allocate costs, and verify current pricing when preparing a budget. AWS Cost Explorer pricing.

How do you attribute the charges to one service?

Tag direct resources and activate the tags

AWS cost-allocation tags label resources so costs can be organized in cost allocation reports and Cost Explorer. Applying a tag alone is not enough: activate it in Billing and Cost Management, and check that the relevant service supports the tag and exposes the costs as expected. Route 53 health checks support billing tags, which AWS uses to organize the bill. Use stable values such as an application name, environment, owner, or cost center where they fit your reporting scheme. Tagging Amazon Route 53 health checks.

Set an explicit rule for shared costs

A tag cannot divide a shared load balancer, monitor, or platform charge among services unless the billing data provides that granularity. Choose a measurable proxy tied to workload use—such as request volume, monitored endpoint count, or measured compute—and apply it consistently. AWS Well-Architected guidance recommends allocating costs using workload metrics or business outcomes and reconciling the result with cost and usage information. An allocation based on a proxy is your accounting rule, not a provider-billed fact. AWS Well-Architected cost allocation.

For example, if one shared monitor serves several services and endpoint count is your chosen driver, divide its charge in proportion to the endpoints assigned to each service. Document the driver, keep the underlying counts, and reconcile the allocations to the shared charge so allocated totals neither omit nor duplicate it.

How to compare monitoring approaches fairly

When comparing a cloud-native check, an external uptime service, or a self-managed probe, compare equivalent scope and units rather than looking only at the headline check price:

  • Polling cadence, request volume, failure threshold, and expected detection delay.
  • Checker geography and whether checker activity is independent.
  • Protocol support, TLS/SNI behavior, and response-body validation.
  • Alert delivery and connection to metrics or incident workflows.
  • Base charges, optional features, telemetry, API or query costs, and shared infrastructure.
  • Whether the check measures public user experience, platform readiness, or process liveness.

These dimensions determine what a monitor tells you and what its full cost includes. The Route 53 prices above do not establish that it is the cheapest or best option overall; a conclusion like that requires current, comparable pricing and capability data for the alternatives.
