Whether it recognizes that floor automatically, needs a map selected in the app, or can only do a general clean depends on the exact model and firmware. Do not assume that a robot can use a saved map upstairs just because it can store more than one map.
What to check before carrying it upstairs
- Multi-floor support: Look up the exact model in its manual or official support page. A map-count limit by itself does not establish that the robot can save maps for different floors.
- A saved map for that floor: Create and save a map of the destination level before expecting map-based navigation or room selection there.
- How maps are selected: The robot may recognize the floor automatically, or the app may require a map choice. Follow the model-specific instructions.
- Dock and cleaning-mode requirements: Some jobs depend on the charging base as a localization point. Check whether a whole-area clean is possible without a saved map and whether directed room cleaning must start at the dock.
Keep the charging dock where the manufacturer recommends. For the Roborock workflow described below, the dock stays on its original floor; iRobot cautions that its base is a point of reference and advises against moving the charging station to another floor.

Roborock: create maps first, then carry the robot alone
Roborock’s support article uses the S7 as its example and notes that steps can vary by model and firmware. Its instructions say to create the first map with saved-map mode, starting from the dock, covering the rooms intended for that map, and returning to the original dock. For another floor, enable multi-floor mode, choose “create new map,” and take the robot—not the dock—to that level. The article says the robot returns to its starting point and stores the new map. Once the maps are saved, carry the robot alone to the other floor and start it; Roborock says it will recognize the floor and use the matching map. Roborock’s multi-floor map instructions

The support article lists the S4, S4 Max, S5 Max, S6, S6 Pure, S6 MaxV, S7, S7 MaxV, S8, S8+, S8 Pro Ultra, Q Revo, Q8 Max, and Q5 Pro as supporting multi-floor maps. Confirm the feature and current steps for your exact model and firmware rather than treating this list as a guarantee for every regional version.

Why map count can be misleading
Roborock’s map-count FAQ says the S6, S4, and S5 Max could save three maps, but separately says that maps for different floors require multi-floor support to be supported and enabled. In other words, the number of maps a robot can save is not, on its own, proof that it can maintain and use a separate map for each level. Roborock’s map-count FAQ
iRobot Roomba: behavior varies by model
iRobot’s Smart Maps guide says supported robots can be brought to a separate space and started on a new mapping run. It says Smart Map-enabled robots can store 10 maps, but the same guide limits the i3–i5 family to one Smart Map; the figure is not a universal capacity for every Roomba. The guide also says moving the charging station to another floor is not recommended because the robot uses the base as a point of reference. Cleaning another floor with an i3, i4, or i5
According to iRobot’s separate guide, these models can clean another floor without creating a second map by starting a “Clean Everywhere” job. That is different from mapped, room-specific cleaning: directed room cleans must begin at the charging station, and picking up the robot during a job interrupts that mode’s localization. The guide notes regional firmware requirements, so consult the support page for your location and software version. iRobot’s i3/i4/i5 multi-floor cleaning guidance

Some models can still run a general whole-area cleaning job on another level, but that does not mean they can use a map there. Map-based navigation, room selection, and directed cleans may be unavailable or behave differently without a saved map. Check the official instructions for the exact model before starting a job, especially if it normally relies on its dock for localization.

- Check the robot’s model number and current firmware in its app or on its label.
- Confirm that the manufacturer’s instructions explicitly support multiple floors, not merely multiple saved maps.
- If supported, follow the app’s map-creation process for the destination floor and save that map before relying on automatic recognition or room selection.
- For later cleaning, move the robot as directed by the manufacturer. Leave the dock in place unless the model’s instructions specifically say otherwise.
- If multi-floor maps are not supported, use only a general cleaning mode that the manufacturer documents for an unmapped floor. Do not expect mapped room controls to work there.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming all brands work the same way: Roborock describes automatic floor recognition for its listed multi-floor models; iRobot’s behavior and limitations differ by family.
- Confusing a second space with a second floor: Instructions for mapping separate spaces do not necessarily mean a particular robot can use separate floor maps.
- Moving the dock as a shortcut: The base can serve as a navigation reference. Follow the model’s guidance before relocating it.
- Deleting or replacing a map without checking: Map handling and capacity vary. Consult the official support page or app before removing a saved map.
