Treat an AI-generated vulnerability report as a hypothesis, not proof. Validate it only on a system you own or are explicitly authorized to test, using a controlled copy of the relevant target. First check whether the reported component and conditions are present; then use the least disruptive test that can establish whether the behavior is reproducible. Record the result and its limits, remediate confirmed issues, and verify the fix.
Start with authorization and a defined scope
A lab does not make an otherwise unauthorized test permissible. Before testing, establish that you own the target or have explicit permission covering the work. Record the exact hosts, applications, versions, accounts, permitted techniques, and test window. Do not send an AI-suggested exploit or scan to an arbitrary public target.

- Confirm who authorized the test and what systems that authorization covers.
- Define the boundaries, including accounts and the time period in which testing may occur.
- Keep tests within those boundaries; do not expand to neighboring systems or unrelated data.
Build a controlled target that answers the claim
Use a test instance or sandbox that matches the relevant software version and configuration as closely as practical. Keep it separate from production and use test data. CISA’s 2025 Vulnerability Analysis Pathway course catalog describes maintaining a secure environment for vulnerability analysis and practicing controlled analysis: CISA/NICCS Vulnerability Analysis Pathway course catalog.

Check the report before attempting reproduction
Translate the AI report into a testable claim. Identify the component, version range, vulnerable condition, prerequisites, expected observable effect, and evidence the report says would demonstrate the issue. Then inspect the target’s installed components and configuration to see whether those prerequisites are actually present.
A confident explanation or generated proof-of-concept is not independent confirmation. If the version or configuration does not match the claim, record that mismatch rather than running an unrelated exploit attempt.
Choose the smallest test that can distinguish a real issue
Begin with non-invasive checks such as version and configuration inspection, followed by approved scanning where appropriate. If active reproduction is necessary, use a controlled test account and the smallest request or payload that can confirm the claimed behavior. Avoid unnecessary access to data, persistence, or disruption.

CISA’s 2024 Software Acquisition Guide for Government Enterprise Consumers discusses sandboxed and dynamic testing, fuzzing, and penetration testing for high-risk scenarios: CISA Software Acquisition Guide, Version 2. It does not establish a universal risk ranking or a payload suitable for every vulnerability class; the appropriate method depends on the specific claim and authorized scope.
Observe, compare, and preserve evidence
For each test, compare the expected behavior with what actually happened. Capture enough context for another reviewer to understand and, where possible, repeat the test:
- Target identity, software version, and relevant configuration.
- Test method and tool, with the date and time.
- Expected behavior and observed behavior, including relevant logs.
- Environmental assumptions, evidence collected, and any limits on the test.
Repeat only when needed to determine whether an observation was transient. Keep the test within scope and do not use a surprising result as a reason to probe unrelated systems or data.

Triage without overstating the result
Classify the finding as confirmed, not reproduced, or inconclusive, and explain what the evidence supports. CISA’s 2025 course catalog identifies validating scan results to eliminate false positives as a learning outcome. A test that does not reproduce a finding on one version or configuration does not prove the issue is absent in every environment.
Keep the conclusion tied to the conditions actually tested. For example, “not reproduced on version X with configuration Y under these test conditions” is more defensible than a broad claim that the system is not vulnerable.

Quick Recap
- Impact and isolation: Prefer an approach that limits risk to production and other systems.
- Fidelity: Match the affected version and configuration closely enough to test the stated preconditions.
- Evidence: Choose checks that produce observable results relevant to the claim.
- Repeatability: Favor a setup and procedure another authorized reviewer can reproduce.
- Time and skill: Account for the expertise and effort needed to run the test safely and interpret it correctly.
