Set up a rugged in-vehicle computer as a complete vehicle system: match the computer to its dock, mounting hardware, power supply, antennas, agency software and the specific vehicle. There is no universal wiring or mounting recipe. Have a qualified vehicle equipment integrator assess the exact computer and vehicle configuration before installation.

Choose a computer for the work it must do

Start with the agency’s applications and the conditions officers or responders will encounter. Dispatch, records, mapping, video and other software may have different performance, port and network requirements. Decide whether staff need a convertible laptop/tablet or a dedicated tablet, and whether they will remove it for use outside the vehicle.

Account for shift length, sunlight, gloves, temperature, shock and vibration, as well as required ports and radios. Ruggedness claims and connectivity options apply to specific models and configurations; for example, Getac describes public-safety vehicle computers and model-specific features, not one specification shared by every device. See Getac’s integrated vehicle solutions for police and the B360 Plus specifications.

Match the dock and mount to the device and vehicle

Verify that the dock is made for the exact computer model, then confirm that its mounting hardware fits the target vehicle. Depending on the product, a dock can provide locking or release features, port replication, vehicle power input or antenna pass-through. A rugged computer by itself does not provide those installation functions.

One model-specific example is Getac’s B360 dock. Its US accessory listing describes USB, serial, LAN and HDMI ports, 19 VDC input, optional tri-RF pass-through and variants that list a 120 W vehicle adapter. Those specifications are for the listed B360 dock configurations, not a general requirement for in-vehicle computers. Check the current accessory listing and the exact computer configuration before procurement: Getac Vehicle Dock (PMT).

Plan power and connectivity with the integrator

Compare the dock’s required input and the included or required adapter with the selected computer and the vehicle’s electrical system. The cited B360 dock listing specifies 19 VDC and identifies variants with a 120 W vehicle adapter; other docks and configurations may differ.

The available product information does not establish a universal fuse size, wire gauge, ignition-sense method or battery-drain procedure. Do not apply a generic wiring recipe. Ask the integrator to specify the appropriate installation for the actual vehicle, dock and computer.

Network, antennas and peripherals

List the agency’s requirements for cellular service, Wi-Fi, GPS and connections to radios, cameras or other peripherals. External high-gain antennas may help in difficult coverage conditions, and some docks offer antenna pass-through, but suitability depends on the radio bands, device configuration, carrier and local coverage. Confirm that the computer, dock and peripherals support the intended connections before installation.

Specify security and device management

Work with agency IT and security staff to define authentication, encryption, remote management, the software image, update procedures and handling of sensitive information. Manufacturer materials describe security features for some public-safety configurations, but the controls available depend on the selected hardware and software setup. Record the agency’s requirements for the actual configuration rather than assuming a product name guarantees a particular control.

Place the computer without compromising occupant safety

Have the installer assess screen position, reach and visibility in the specific vehicle. The mount must not obstruct safe operation, intrude into air-bag deployment areas or compromise occupant protection. A placement that appears suitable in one vehicle is not automatically safe in another.

NHTSA recommends keeping at least 10 inches between an occupant and a frontal air-bag cover, maintaining a proper seating position and moving the seat as far back as practical while still allowing the driver to reach the pedals comfortably. Review NHTSA’s current air-bag guidance and use current vehicle-manufacturer service information when assessing the installation.

NHTSA’s patrol-car computer interpretation dates to April 28, 1981. It discusses how vehicle location and applicable standards affect compliance, but it is not a current mount certification or approval for a particular installation. The agency also notes restrictions on commercial modifiers making safety equipment inoperative. A qualified upfitter should assess the exact model year and vehicle configuration.

Commission the complete setup before deployment

Use the actual vehicle, computer, dock and peripherals to check the installation. Agree on acceptance criteria with the integrator and agency before putting the system into service.

  • Confirm the computer is retained securely and that dock locking and release work as intended.
  • Check that the screen is visible and reachable for its intended use without obstructing safe operation.
  • Verify vehicle start-up and shutdown behavior, power continuity and the agency’s expected operating workflow.
  • Test network coverage in the intended operating area and confirm required radios, cameras and other peripherals connect.
  • Run the agency applications and representative workflows, including any required off-vehicle removal and redocking.

These are practical commissioning checks for the components involved; they are not a claim that a particular system has been tested or certified.

Compare complete solutions, not ruggedness claims alone

When evaluating vendors or configurations, compare computer-to-dock compatibility, vehicle fit and serviceability, power and adapter requirements, ports, antenna options, peripheral support, removal workflow, screen readability, operating conditions, model-specific certifications, security and fleet management, vendor support and total installed lifecycle cost.

Getac and Panasonic describe integrated public-safety vehicle offerings. Panasonic says its docks are stress- and vehicle-impact-tested and Panasonic-certified; confirm which specific dock and configuration that statement covers. These manufacturer descriptions are not an independent head-to-head test, and the available sources do not provide comparable cost data. See Panasonic TOUGHBOOK Emergency solutions.
