Use the viscosity and API or ILSAC performance category specified in your owner’s manual. Mixing oil brands that share those specifications is a separate issue; it does not mean that combining grades is recommended.
Why different viscosity grades are not a safe default
Motor oil must meet the vehicle maker’s recommendations for both SAE viscosity and performance category. The American Petroleum Institute (API) advises following the manufacturer’s recommendations and, if it is necessary to mix brands, using the same viscosity grade and API service category to maintain performance. That guidance is about mixing brands—not permission to blend different grades. Read the API Motor Oil Guide.

A viscosity label alone does not establish that an oil is suitable for your engine. API’s oil-category guidance notes that some performance categories have application-specific restrictions. For example, API FA-4 is not interchangeable or backward compatible with categories including CK-4 and CJ-4. Follow the engine manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming that oils are compatible because their labels look similar.
How to assess the oils you’re considering
Check each oil against the vehicle’s requirements, not just against the other oil. The relevant questions are:
#1 Best Overall
- Formulated for engines with 75,000 miles or more, Valvoline MaxLife High Mileage synthetic blend is formulated with seal conditioners to help prevent oil leaks and reduce oil consumption
- Delivers 20% better wear protection and 15% better sludge defense than industry standards to help prevent engine breakdown
- Extra detergents safeguard against friction, corrosion and deposits to keep high-mileage engines clean
- Advanced friction-fighting additives help maximize performance and improve fuel efficiency
- Provides performance benefits for high mileage, new and re-built engines alike
- Viscosity: Does each oil’s SAE grade match a grade the owner’s manual permits?
- Performance category: Does each oil meet the API or ILSAC category required for the vehicle?
- Application restrictions: Does the vehicle manufacturer specify limits or exclusions for the engine?
API describes its Engine Oil Licensing & Certification System as a voluntary licensing and quality-mark program. Its overview is available at API’s Engine Oil Licensing & Certification System page.
Different brands, grades, and oil types are different questions
Different brands with matching specifications
API says that when mixing brands is necessary, the oils should have the same viscosity grade and API service category. Valvoline likewise says oils from different brands are generally mixable when their viscosity and API rating match. These recommendations concern brand mixing under matching specifications; they do not recommend mixing grades.

- High Mileage for engines 75,000+ miles
- Helps extend engine life of higher mileage vehicles
- Protects for 15,000 miles – guaranteed*
- Contains additives to help fight sludge
- Keeps your engine running like new
Different viscosity grades
Do not assume that two grades can be blended safely just because each is sold for motor vehicles. Unless the vehicle maker permits the combination, use the specified grade rather than deliberately making a blend.

Synthetic and conventional oil
Base-oil type is not a substitute for checking viscosity and performance standards. Valvoline says that mixing synthetic and conventional oil does not by itself ruin an engine, but that is Valvoline’s general consumer guidance—not a guarantee for every oil or vehicle. Its explanation is Can You Mix Synthetic and Conventional Oil?

If you already added a different grade
The outcome depends on the vehicle and the oils involved. The sources cited here do not establish a universal safe quantity threshold or predict the effect of an unspecified mixed-grade fill.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Advanced protection against the four main causes of engine breakdown: wear friction heat and deposits
- Delivers 40% stronger wear protection than industry standards to reduce friction and improve fuel economy
- Provides 15% better deposit defense vs. industry standards, keeping engines cleaner for smoother performance and longer-lasting protection
- Up to 2.5X better heat protection vs. industry standards to fight harmful sludge formation and thermal breakdown
- Engineered for excellent low-temperature flow, reducing metal-to-metal contact during cold starts — when most engine wear typically occurs
Rank #4
- Helps extend engine life, even in severe conditions
- Protects for 15,000 miles – guaranteed*
- Contains additives to help fight sludge
- Keeps your engine running like new
- Check the owner’s manual for the approved viscosity and required API or ILSAC category.
- Return to the specified oil for the next top-up or oil change; don’t continue adding a different grade unless the manufacturer says it is suitable.
- Seek vehicle-specific guidance if you added a substantial amount, the engine is showing symptoms, or the manufacturer gives a specific instruction for your situation.
