Yes. On an unlocked phone that supports the required dual-SIM setup, you can leave your regular SIM or home eSIM active for your existing number and use a travel eSIM for mobile data. Your home number can continue to receive calls, SMS and verification codes only to the extent that your home carrier supports roaming or Wi-Fi Calling abroad. Set the travel eSIM as the data line and disable data roaming on the home line where your phone allows it; otherwise, the home line may still generate roaming charges.
What keeping your number actually means
A travel eSIM is an additional mobile plan, not a replacement for your phone number. Your home SIM or eSIM remains attached to the number people already know. The travel eSIM supplies a separate connection, usually for data in the country or region you are visiting.

With both lines enabled, a compatible phone can keep the home line available for incoming calls and text messages while routing internet traffic through the travel plan. On Apple’s documented Dual SIM setup, two numbers can be used for calls, iMessage, SMS and MMS. The same basic separation applies on other dual-SIM phones, although menu names and carrier behavior vary.

A data-only travel eSIM does not change those terms or pay your home carrier’s charges.

(The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

Check these requirements before you buy or install anything
Your phone must support eSIM and dual-SIM operation
The handset needs to run the home line and the travel line at the same time, or at least let you switch between them without deleting the home profile. Apple lists the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later for its documented Dual SIM arrangement. iPhone 13 and later can use two eSIMs in addition to combinations involving a physical SIM and an eSIM. Other manufacturers have different model and regional limits, so check the exact model rather than relying on the phone family name.
The phone may need to be unlocked
If the home and travel plans come from different providers, the phone generally must be carrier-unlocked. A carrier-locked handset can reject an otherwise valid travel eSIM. Unlocking rules depend on the carrier and country; resolve that issue before departure because an eSIM cannot bypass a network lock.
Confirm the travel plan’s scope
Travel eSIM plans differ in destination coverage, data allowance, validity period and whether they include a telephone number, voice and SMS. Many are data-only. A plan that works in one country may not cover a neighboring country, and a regional plan may have a fair-use or high-speed-data limit. Check the covered destinations and expiry date before installation.

| eSIM support | The phone must be able to download the travel profile. | Exact model, country variant and software support. |
| Dual-SIM capability | Both lines need to remain available for simultaneous use. | Whether your phone supports physical SIM plus eSIM, two eSIMs, or only one active line. |
| Carrier lock | A locked handset may refuse a different provider. | Unlocked status when home and travel providers differ. |
| Destination | Coverage is plan-specific. | Every country or region on the itinerary. |

Set up a travel eSIM without losing your regular number
Install the additional plan while you still have reliable Wi-Fi and time to contact the carrier if activation fails. Do not erase the home SIM or eSIM: deleting it can remove the profile needed for your regular number.
- Check compatibility and unlock status. Confirm eSIM and dual-SIM support for the exact handset, and make sure a different-provider plan is allowed.
- Buy a plan covering the itinerary. Record the provider’s activation instructions, supported countries, data amount, validity and any voice/SMS inclusions.
- Install before departure over Wi-Fi. Use the provider’s QR code, app or manual activation method. Keep the home line installed; adding a plan should not require deleting it.
- Label the lines clearly. In the phone’s cellular or mobile-network settings, give the existing line a label such as “Home” and the new one “Travel.” Clear labels prevent selecting the wrong line later.
- Keep the home line enabled for your number. Set the home line as the line for calls and texts associated with the existing number when those services are important to you. On iPhone, Dual SIM settings are under Settings and then Cellular or Mobile Data; wording differs by iOS version and region.
- Choose the travel eSIM for mobile data. Set the travel line as the data line. If the phone offers an option to allow mobile-data switching, leave it off unless you deliberately want the phone to fall back to the home line.
- Control roaming separately on each line. Turn off data roaming for the home line where supported. Keep roaming enabled on the travel line only when that provider’s instructions require it for the included network.
- Test before relying on it. Send an incoming SMS to the home number and, if possible, trigger a bank or account verification message. Test data with the travel line selected while still on Wi-Fi, then briefly with Wi-Fi off. Fix any issue before you leave.
Will calls, texts and bank codes still arrive?
Incoming calls
Calls to your established number can ring on the home line if that line remains enabled and the carrier provides international service or Wi-Fi Calling in your destination. The travel eSIM does not automatically forward or replace those calls. Answering, returning a call or reaching voicemail may incur home-carrier roaming charges, depending on the carrier’s tariff.
SMS and account verification codes
Text-based one-time codes normally go to the phone number registered with the bank or service, so keeping the home line active is the way to preserve access to that number. Delivery still depends on the home carrier’s ability to receive SMS abroad. A data-only travel eSIM cannot receive a code sent to your home number unless the service itself delivers codes through an internet channel such as an app.

Test a real verification message before travel. Some financial services block or delay codes when a number is roaming, and some send security alerts through a separate authenticator app or email instead. Do not delete or deactivate the home profile after installing the travel plan.
iMessage, MMS and messaging apps
Apple’s Dual SIM guidance covers iMessage, SMS and MMS with two numbers. Make sure the home number remains selected for conversations that must identify you by that number. Internet messaging apps use data, so they can normally use the travel eSIM’s connection, but that does not change which number receives carrier SMS.
How to avoid an unexpected roaming bill
The safest arrangement for most travelers is to keep the home line available for essential calls and texts while preventing it from becoming the data connection. Data usage is often the largest source of accidental charges, especially when the phone silently switches lines.

- Set the travel eSIM as the sole data line. Verify the selected line after landing and after every restart or software update.
- Disable data roaming on the home line. This blocks cellular internet through the home plan where the setting is available, while leaving the line enabled for supported calls and SMS.
- Disable automatic data switching. A feature that uses the other line when the chosen data line has poor service can defeat your cost controls.
- Review voicemail behavior. An unanswered call may be forwarded to voicemail and can create a roaming event under some carrier tariffs.
- Check Wi-Fi Calling terms. Wi-Fi Calling can let the home line work over an internet connection, but eligibility, emergency-calling behavior and billing are carrier-specific.
- Monitor the carrier account. Look for roaming alerts, usage counters and international-pass requirements rather than assuming the travel plan protects the home line.
Apple notes that when both lines stay on, capabilities on the primary line can continue to work, but using the travel eSIM for data may still result in roaming fees from the home eSIM. The exact charge depends on the home carrier, destination and service used.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Carrier policies can override the phone’s settings
Technical dual-SIM support and carrier permission are separate issues. A provider can limit how long a line may be used outside its home country, restrict data while allowing calls and texts, or require an international add-on.

Google Fi illustrates this distinction: its help guidance says extended use abroad can trigger a warning and later suspension of international data, while calling and texting may continue. That behavior is specific to the provider, but it demonstrates why a phone setting is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Read your home carrier’s current international-use policy before departure, including long-stay limits, roaming rates, Wi-Fi Calling rules and voicemail treatment.

Choose the right travel eSIM plan
| Decision | Questions to answer | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Does it include every destination, including transit countries? | You may need a country plan, regional plan or a second plan for another leg. |
| Data amount | How much high-speed data is included, and what happens afterward? | Maps, video calls and tethering can consume an allowance quickly. |
| Validity | When does the period begin: installation, activation or first network use? | Installing early can shorten the usable period on some plans; follow the provider’s rule. |
| Voice and SMS | Is there a travel number or only data? | Data-only plans support apps but do not replace the home number for carrier SMS. |
| Tethering | Is hotspot use allowed? | A laptop or second device may require a plan that explicitly permits tethering. |
| Network access | Which local networks and speeds are supported? | Coverage can differ between cities, rural areas and indoor locations. |
Worldwide providers advertise different data amounts, durations and country or regional coverage. Compare those terms with your actual itinerary instead of choosing solely by the headline data figure.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The travel eSIM shows no service
- Check that the plan covers the country you are in and that its validity has started.
- Confirm the travel line is turned on and selected for data.
- Follow the provider’s instructions about data roaming on the travel line; some international eSIMs require it.
- Restart the phone or briefly toggle the affected line off and on.
- If the phone is locked, contact the home carrier; reinstalling the eSIM will not remove a lock.
Data works, but the home number does not receive SMS
- Verify that the home line remains enabled and is still the line assigned to the existing number.
- Check whether the home carrier supports SMS reception in that destination or requires roaming activation.
- Confirm that airplane mode is off and that the home line has network registration.
- Use Wi-Fi Calling only if the carrier supports it and the account is configured for it.
- Contact the carrier if ordinary messages arrive but bank codes do not; the financial service may impose its own security restriction.
The phone uses the home line for data
Reopen cellular or mobile-data settings and select the travel eSIM. Turn off automatic data switching and check the home line’s data-roaming toggle. A restart, weak travel signal or an accidental tap can change the active data line.
You see an unexpected charge
Identify whether it came from data, an answered or returned call, SMS, voicemail or a roaming pass. Keep the home line enabled only for the services you need, and ask the carrier whether a billing adjustment or international block is available. Do not assume that a travel eSIM retroactively covers home-line usage.

If the handset cannot keep both profiles active, is carrier-locked, or lacks eSIM support, you have three practical alternatives: use the travel plan only after temporarily disabling the home line, use a physical local SIM if the phone accepts one, or upgrade to an unlocked dual-SIM/eSIM-compatible phone. Disabling the home line means you should not expect calls, SMS or bank codes to arrive until it is restored or the service is moved to another channel.
For travelers who need a familiar number for two-factor authentication, the unlocked dual-SIM arrangement is usually the most flexible: the home line stays available for identity and carrier messaging, while the travel line handles ordinary internet use. It still requires checking the home carrier’s international policy and monitoring the selected data line throughout the trip.
