Your Pixel 6 will not stop working when Google’s update period ends. The change is that you should no longer assume Google will provide future Pixel-specific Android or security patches, so the phone’s protection may become less current over time.
When does Pixel 6 support end?
Google lists the Pixel 6 for five years of operating-system and security updates, counted from when the phone first became available on the Google Store in the US. Google announced US store availability starting October 28, 2021, so that commitment reaches around October 2026. Google gives a support duration rather than a precise final-patch date, so October 2026 is an estimate, not a guaranteed date for the last update.

In December 2024, Google announced two additional years of Android updates for the Pixel 6 series, bringing the total to five years. Google’s current Pixel Help page says: “This includes 5 years of OS and security updates, and may also include new and upgraded features with Pixel Drops.” Google Pixel Help: Learn when you’ll get software updates on Google Pixel phones. The Android, Pixel & Tensor security teams also described five years of guaranteed Android security updates from the Pixel 6’s US launch in their October 27, 2021 security post.
What changes when updates stop?
The phone remains usable, but its update outlook changes. Google says Pixel updates can include operating-system updates, security enhancements, bug fixes and features; rollout timing can vary by carrier and device. After Google’s stated commitment ends, do not count on receiving future Pixel-specific patches. Google publishes Pixel Security Bulletins for supported devices.

Without future device-level fixes, protection may become less current as new issues are addressed for supported devices. That does not mean every unpatched flaw affects every owner, or that the Pixel 6 becomes unsafe on one particular day. The available information does not establish a universal safety threshold or a probability of compromise.
How to check your Pixel 6’s update status
- Open Settings on the phone.
- Look for Android version and the Android security update level to see the installed software and patch status.
- Check the separate Google Play system update status if you want to see that component’s status too. Google’s Android Help page on checking and updating your Android version explains these fields.
These are distinct status indicators. A current Play system component or app update does not prove that Google is still providing all Pixel firmware, operating-system or Pixel-specific security updates.

Should you keep using your Pixel 6?
Base the decision on what you use the phone for, not just on whether it still turns on. Consider the sensitivity of the accounts and data you access, whether essential apps still support the installed software, and whether replacing a working phone is worthwhile for you.
