Your phone’s compatibility, data needs, and whether you must keep your usual number can change which option makes sense.
Start with your plan, destination, and phone
A domestic “unlimited” plan does not automatically include international roaming. Before you leave, check whether your exact destination is covered, what voice, text, and data are included, and what happens when an allowance runs out. The Federal Communications Commission advises travelers to understand roaming rules and rates before departure in its wireless travel guidance.

Ask your carrier whether your exact phone model will work on the destination’s networks and whether calls, texts, and data are supported. A local SIM or travel eSIM may require an unlocked phone with compatible network bands. Apple’s iPhone travel eSIM guidance explains how to check carrier lock and country compatibility.
Compare the options against how you’ll use your phone
| Option | Often suits | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Roaming included in your home plan | Your plan covers the destination and your expected calls, texts, and data | Country coverage, allowances, speed limits, and charges or service after an allowance is used |
| Carrier travel pass | You want to keep your usual number and prefer a predictable, activation-based charge | Daily trigger, trip length, destination list, included calls, line-by-line fees, limits, and fallback rates |
| Pay-per-use roaming | You expect very little use and accept the destination-specific rates | Per-minute, per-message, and per-data charges; background activity and voicemail may also matter |
| Local SIM or travel eSIM | Your phone can use another provider and you mainly need local connectivity or data | Unlock status, network compatibility, coverage, validity, top-ups, number retention, and voice or text inclusion |
| Wi-Fi or hotspot | You can plan around available Wi-Fi or a shared connection | Availability away from lodging, security and reliability needs, hotspot data terms, and whether you still need mobile calls or texts |
| Rented handset or hotspot | A separate device or shared connection fits your itinerary | Rental cost, pickup and return, coverage, included data, and how people can reach you |
Compare the total expected cost for the entire trip, not just a headline daily fee. Consider how many lines will use service, how often you’ll use mobile data, whether calls to third countries are included, and what rates apply if you exceed an allowance. Wi-Fi can reduce cellular data use, but it does not provide mobile coverage when you are away from a Wi-Fi network.

Use U.S. carrier examples as illustrations, not universal prices
Carrier terms vary by plan, account, destination, and date. These published U.S.-oriented examples show why it is important to check the rules that apply to your own trip:
- AT&T International Day Pass: AT&T’s support page, updated March 2, 2026, lists $12 per 24-hour period for one line on land or air, and $6 for each additional line on the same account on the same calendar day. Use in included destinations triggers the daily fee; calls to other destinations may incur international long-distance charges. AT&T describes more than 210 destinations, but travelers need to confirm that their destination and plan conditions qualify. See AT&T International Day Pass details.
- AT&T pay-per-use fallback: Use in destinations not included in International Day Pass is charged at pay-per-use rates. Background use may trigger a fee; AT&T’s international usage guidance recommends airplane mode with Wi-Fi when avoiding cellular use.
- Google Fi Flexible plan: Google Fi’s current support page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists $10 per GB of data in more than 200 destinations, $0.20 per minute for calls outside the U.S., and unlimited texts for the Flexible plan. International features vary by plan and device; for example, Unlimited Essentials does not support international data, calls, and texts. Check Google Fi’s international services details.
- Verizon TravelPass: Verizon’s FAQ describes calls within the visited country and to the U.S. as included, while calls to a different country and Wi-Fi calls to non-U.S. numbers may be billed at international long-distance rates. Check the Verizon TravelPass FAQs for the rules that apply to your itinerary.

Estimate charges beyond the advertised price
For a travel pass, find out what activity starts the charge, whether the fee recurs each day, and whether each line has its own fee. Confirm which destinations are included and whether calls to other countries are treated differently from calls to the U.S. or the country you are visiting. Also check the fallback rates if your destination is excluded or your pass does not apply.

For pay-per-use roaming, check the per-minute, per-message, and per-data rates for your destination. Small amounts of background data, automatic downloads, or voicemail activity can lead to charges, so a low-use plan is only predictable if you know what counts as use.

Prepare your phone to avoid unwanted cellular use
- Confirm service and compatibility: Ask your carrier whether your exact model works in the destination and which voice, text, and data services are available. If you plan to use a different provider, check that the phone is unlocked and supports the destination network.
- Review roaming and data settings: Check cellular-data and roaming settings, and stop automatic downloads or background activity if they could trigger paid use.
- Choose which line handles each service: If you use a travel SIM or eSIM, decide whether to keep your home line available for calls and texts. Do so only after confirming that its roaming behavior and charges are understood.
- Set up Wi-Fi deliberately: If you are relying on Wi-Fi to avoid cellular use, prevent the phone from silently switching to cellular where that matters. A hotspot can share data, but it does not automatically replace mobile voice or SMS.
Check Wi-Fi calling and emergency arrangements
Wi-Fi calling charges depend on the carrier and the number called. AT&T says calls from abroad to U.S. numbers are at no additional charge under its cited guidance, while calls to other international numbers depend on the roaming add-on. Check AT&T’s Wi-Fi calling guidance and your carrier’s current rules before relying on it. Verizon also notes that Wi-Fi calls to non-U.S. numbers can be billed at international long-distance rates in its TravelPass FAQs.
Emergency calling arrangements differ by destination and service. Confirm local emergency numbers, and do not assume an internet calling app provides all the emergency features of ordinary mobile service.
