You can record audio on a Mac without using an internet-based recording service: use Voice Memos for a quick recording or QuickTime Player when you want to choose the microphone, quality, and save location. Offline recording does not automatically disable syncing, however. Apple says Voice Memos recordings can be available on other devices signed in to the same Apple Account, so check your sync settings if keeping a recording on one Mac matters.
How do I record audio offline on my Mac?
Both built-in apps provide a local recording workflow that does not require an online recording service. Choose Voice Memos for simplicity, or QuickTime Player for more control over the input, quality, and where the file is saved.

Record with Voice Memos
- Open Voice Memos on your Mac.
- Select the built-in microphone, a supported headset, or an external microphone as your input.
- Click the Record button. Pause or resume the recording as needed, then click Done to finish.
- Use Voice Memos’ editing tools if you need to trim the recording or replace part of it.
Apple’s Voice Memos guide documents the recording inputs, basic controls, and editing options.
Record with QuickTime Player
- Open QuickTime Player and choose File > New Audio Recording.
- Open the recording options and select the microphone you want to use.
- Choose a quality setting, then click the Start Recording control.
- To pause, Option-click the Start Recording control; click it again to resume.
- When finished, choose File > Save, enter a name, and select a save location.

QuickTime’s Maximum setting can use large amounts of storage, according to Apple. The two quality options are described in its recording guide.
Can I record on a Mac without internet?
Voice Memos and QuickTime Player have built-in recording workflows that do not rely on an internet-based recording service. That is different from proving that every Mac configuration keeps all recordings off the network: account syncing and other settings can affect where a recording is available. If local-only access is important, review the account and device sync settings rather than treating the act of recording offline as proof that syncing is off.

Where does QuickTime save audio recordings?
QuickTime lets you choose the destination when you save: select File > Save and pick a name and location. For a private recording, choose a folder that is not shared with other users or services, and avoid moving or sharing the file unintentionally.
How do I stop apps from using my Mac microphone?
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Review the listed apps and turn microphone access on or off for each one.
- Check Control Center’s Recording Indicator to see when the Mac microphone is in use or was used recently.
Apple documents these controls in its microphone privacy guide. Microphone access is separate from permission to capture system audio. Do Voice Memos sync between my Mac and iPhone?
Apple says Voice Memos recordings can be listened to on any Apple device signed in to the same Apple Account. If you do not want a recording available on your other devices, check your account and device synchronization settings; recording without an internet service does not itself turn off that availability.
How can I keep a recording private after capture?
- Choose a save location that is not shared with other users or services.
- Limit microphone and system-audio permissions to apps that need them.
- Review account and device synchronization settings if the recording should stay on one Mac.
- Avoid sharing or syncing the file unintentionally.
These steps reduce common exposure paths, but Apple’s cited documentation does not certify that any particular configuration guarantees zero transmission.

Do I need an external microphone?
No. The built-in microphone is enough to start recording, and Voice Memos also supports a compatible headset or external microphone. An external USB microphone is an optional sound-input upgrade, not a requirement for offline recording or privacy. Check compatibility and any adapter or interface needs before connecting one.
