Usually, no. Downloading a title through Xbox Game Pass gives you a subscription entitlement, not permanent ownership. When the game leaves the catalog—or your subscription ends—the installed files can remain on your console or PC, but the Game Pass license no longer authorizes play. To continue, purchase the base game in a compatible edition, or keep an eligible subscription while the title remains available.
What changes when a Game Pass game leaves?
Game Pass provides access under a subscription license. It does not transfer the game’s ownership license to your Microsoft account merely because you installed the title. Dovetail Games Support explains that included games can be played only while the subscription is active. Its support article, updated August 27, 2026, also states that once a game leaves the service, you must purchase it to continue playing.

The installed data is not the same thing as the right to launch the game. A console or PC may leave the files in place to avoid a full re-download, but the service can still check whether your account has an active entitlement. If that entitlement has expired, the game can show a purchase prompt, a subscription message, or fail to start even though its icon and files remain visible.

Leaving the catalog and ending your subscription have the same licensing effect
There are two common triggers: the title is removed from Game Pass, or your own subscription expires, is canceled, or no longer includes the required access. In either case, the Game Pass authorization ends. A game leaving the catalog does not create a grace period in which the download becomes yours.

A purchased license is separate
Microsoft’s Xbox usage rules distinguish user and device licenses for purchased digital games from subscription access. Buying the game creates a separate purchase license associated with the account used for the transaction. Microsoft’s accepted Q&A answer from June 14, 2024, describes a purchased game as remaining yours even if a subscription ends or the title is later removed from the store. That answer is community content, so treat the store’s current terms and the edition you buy as the controlling details.
How to keep playing after removal
Option 1: Finish before the removal date
If you are close to completing the game, the simplest choice is to use the remaining notice period. You can keep playing under Game Pass until the title actually leaves, subject to your subscription remaining active. Back up important screenshots or other local data according to your platform’s normal procedures; a Game Pass entitlement does not guarantee indefinite access to the installed application.
Option 2: Renew or maintain an eligible subscription
Renewing helps only while the game is still part of the catalog and your subscription tier includes it. It does not restore access after the title has left. Before renewing for this purpose, verify the game’s current listing and the plan’s eligibility rather than assuming every Game Pass tier includes every title.

Option 3: Buy the base game
Purchase the specific Xbox game you want to keep. The digital or physical edition must match your platform, region, and any edition-specific requirements. Xbox Wire advises members to watch the “Leaving Soon” collection and notes that member discounts may be available when a game is about to depart.
A digital purchase normally becomes available when you sign in with the Microsoft account that made the transaction. A physical purchase supplies a disc-based license; on a disc-enabled console, the disc generally needs to be present to verify that license. Check the product listing for the exact console generation, PC or console version, region, and included content before paying.

Does buying DLC mean you own the game?
No. Add-ons, expansions, season passes, and other downloadable content are separate from the base-game license. Dovetail Games Support explicitly warns that if you purchased add-ons while a title was in Game Pass, you still need to purchase the game after it leaves. Your account can retain the DLC purchase while the base application remains locked.

What to buy
- Buy the base game first, using the exact platform and edition that supports your console or PC.
- Check whether the DLC is tied to a particular edition, generation, or region.
- Do not assume an expansion bundle includes a playable base game unless the store description says so.
- If you already own an add-on, sign in with the account that purchased it after acquiring the base game so the entitlement can be recognized.
What happens to your save and progress?
Your save is separate from the Game Pass access license, but save behavior depends on the game and platform. Microsoft’s usage rules specifically promise cross-device continuation for Xbox Play Anywhere titles: progress is saved with your gamertag and can follow you to another supported device. That guarantee should not be generalized to every Xbox game, PC version, console generation, or third-party launcher.
When you buy the same game
Use the same Microsoft account and gamertag that you used while playing through Game Pass. Install or launch the matching edition, then allow the platform to synchronize any available cloud save. If the purchased version is a different game, region, generation, or launcher entitlement, the save may not be recognized even though the title has a similar name.
Before switching platforms
Check the store page for Play Anywhere support and the supported devices. Play Anywhere is the evidence-based case for gamertag-linked progress across supported devices; without that designation, verify the game publisher’s save-transfer rules instead of assuming cross-platform continuity.

How much warning do you get?
Xbox Wire said on November 17, 2020, that members would receive roughly two weeks’ notice before a game leaves. The notice appears through the mobile app, the Xbox app on Windows, and the Game Pass section on console, including a “Leaving Soon” collection. The exact departure date can differ by title and region, so treat the date shown in your account or store listing as the actionable one.
- Open the Game Pass app, the Xbox app, or the console’s Game Pass section.
- Select Leaving Soon and open the game’s details page.
- Record the listed removal date and check whether your subscription remains active through that date.
- Decide whether to finish the game, renew an eligible subscription for the remaining catalog period, or purchase the base game.
- If you buy it, confirm the platform, edition, region, and account before completing checkout.
- After purchase, sign in with the same Microsoft account and start the game so the purchased license and any supported save can be detected.
Renewing versus buying: a practical decision guide
The better choice depends on how soon the game leaves, how much you expect to replay it, and whether your current subscription already covers other games you want. Use these questions rather than treating the subscription discount as automatic proof that buying is cheaper.

Troubleshooting when the purchased game is still locked
You bought DLC but not the base game
Return to the store page and purchase the standalone base game or a bundle that explicitly includes it. An expansion, currency pack, or season pass cannot substitute for that license.
You used a different account
Check the order history for the Microsoft account that completed the purchase. Sign out and back in with that account, then launch the game from the account’s library. Family or console-sharing arrangements can affect which account is authorized, so use the platform’s current sharing rules rather than assuming a DLC owner and base-game owner are interchangeable.
The edition or region does not match
Compare the purchased listing with the installed version’s platform, generation, region, and publisher. A disc from one region, a PC code, a cloud-focused edition, and a console download can have different entitlements. If the store offers more than one version, read the compatibility text before requesting a refund or buying again.
The save is missing
Verify that you are using the original gamertag, that the game supports cloud synchronization on your device, and that the purchased copy is the same title and supported version. If it is an Xbox Play Anywhere game, check the supported-device list; otherwise consult the game publisher’s documented transfer method.
Services that may still require separate access
Buying the base game settles the ownership question, but it does not automatically provide every online service. Multiplayer, cloud features, subscription-based perks, age restrictions, and platform-network requirements can have their own rules. The cited licensing guidance does not establish one universal multiplayer entitlement for every game. Check the game’s current Xbox listing and the network requirements for your platform before assuming that a purchase alone enables online play.
Bottom line for a departing game
Plan around the removal date, not the fact that the game remains installed. Finish it during the notice period, keep an eligible subscription only while the title is still included, or buy the compatible base game with the account you use to play. DLC purchases remain separate, and progress is most reliably portable when the title explicitly supports Xbox Play Anywhere.
