It depends on how the game is free. A free-to-play game from the PlayStation Store is generally yours to play without PS Plus, including online. A PS Plus monthly game is different: you can play it only while your account has an active subscription. Downloading or claiming that game does not make it permanently yours.
First, identify what “free” means
PlayStation uses “free” for different kinds of access, and the rules are not interchangeable. The source of the game entitlement determines whether it remains playable when PS Plus ends.

Can you keep a PS Plus monthly game forever?
No. PlayStation’s FAQ says PS Plus games are yours to keep “for as long as you remain an active subscriber.” In practice, that means the game stays attached to the account as a subscription benefit, not as a permanently owned copy. If membership expires, a previously claimed monthly game becomes unavailable until the account has an active membership again.

What happens when you cancel PS Plus?
Turning off renewal does not immediately remove your benefits. PlayStation says they continue through the subscription time you have already paid for. Monthly games and other subscription benefits stop when that paid period ends. PlayStation’s cancellation guidance explains how cancellation works.
Do you need PS Plus to play online on PS4?
Not always. Free-to-play games such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone generally allow online play without PS Plus. For most paid games, online multiplayer does require membership, though exceptions exist. The requirement is specific to each title, so check its PlayStation Store page rather than assuming that every online game follows the same rule.

How to check your game’s access rule
- Check the Store listing. Open the game’s PlayStation Store page for your country or region and look for its PS Plus or online multiplayer requirements.
- Identify the entitlement. Determine whether the game is free-to-play, a monthly PS Plus game, part of a PS Plus catalog, or something you purchased.
- Check membership and catalog status. For a monthly or catalog game, confirm that the account has active PS Plus and that the game is still offered in the relevant tier and region.
PlayStation warns that games and features can change and that availability varies by country or region, tier, platform and device. The local Store and current subscription listing are the best references for a specific account.
