On your PS4, sign in to your PlayStation account, open PlayStation Store, and choose a game listed as free-to-play. After adding it, find it under Library > Purchased, select it, then choose Download. The game installs automatically when the download finishes.
Download a free-to-play game on your PS4
- Sign in to your PlayStation account. The PS4 Store requires an account sign-in. If you need help setting up the console, see Sony’s PS4 setup guide.
- Open PlayStation Store from the PS4 home screen and find a game currently listed as free-to-play. Sony’s PS4 beginner guide also covers free-to-play games and demos. Store listings and availability can vary by region and change over time, so check the price shown on your console.
- Open the game’s Store page and choose the option to add or download it. The button wording can differ between listings or software versions. If it is listed as free-to-play, you do not need to buy the game to start its download.
- If you need to find it again, go to Library > Purchased. Select the game, then choose Download. Sony’s PlayStation Store download instructions say, “The game will install automatically.”
- Wait for the download and installation to finish, then launch the game from the PS4 home screen. Download time and file size vary by game and network; there is no single completion time to expect.
Free-to-play games are different from PS Plus monthly games
A game listed as free-to-play in the Store is a Store download. PlayStation Plus monthly games are a separate membership offer: Sony describes them as available at no extra cost during an active membership. That does not make them unrestricted, permanently free-to-play downloads. Check Sony’s PlayStation Plus monthly games guidance for the current access terms.

If the Store or download is unavailable
- Check account sign-in: Confirm that the PS4 is signed in to the PlayStation account you intend to use.
- Check system software: Sony recommends keeping the PS4 system software up to date for online features. See Sony’s PS4 system software guide for update instructions.
- Check free storage: If the console does not have enough room, you may be able to delete applications, download to USB extended storage, or upgrade the PS4 hard drive. Sony explains these options in its PS4 storage guide. A deleted game can be downloaded again from Library, so deleting an installed game does not mean you have to buy it again.
Optional: start a download remotely
You can start a PS4 download remotely through Sony’s supported download flow, but it requires the PS4 to be activated as your account’s primary console and automatic downloads to be configured. If those conditions are not met, the download starts the next time you turn on the console. Downloading directly on the PS4 avoids this extra setup.
