Before buying, ask whether the game is worth its price in the state you can play today. Layoffs can make future development less certain, but they do not prove a game will be cancelled, abandoned, or defective. Check the current build, recent official updates, who supports it, and the refund terms for the exact store where you plan to pay.
Start with what the game offers now
Separate playable content from promised content. Check which modes and features are available, how the game performs for your needs, and what the store page says is still in development. If the game would not be worth its price without planned additions, buying now means accepting that uncertainty.

Read the game’s current-state description, its stated plans for a full release, recent patch notes or news, and the channels the developer says it will use to communicate. Valve asks Steam Early Access developers to explain the current state and planned differences from the full release, and to keep the page up to date. Steamworks: Early Access.

On Steam, an Early Access page may receive a notice if the game has gone more than 12 months without meeting Valve’s qualifying update criteria—an update build or an update-type announcement. Treat the notice as a limited platform signal, not a forecast. Its absence does not establish that development is active or healthy. Steamworks: Early Access.
Find out who is responsible for development and support
Check the store listing’s developer and publisher credits, the game’s official support page, and any direct statement from the studio or publisher. If layoffs have been reported, distinguish confirmed statements from reporting or speculation, and note when each was published. Look for specific information about who will handle updates, customer support, and any announced transition; do not infer those arrangements from the layoff report alone.

Layoffs can increase uncertainty, but a report about one studio cannot predict what will happen to another game. GamesRadar+ reported leadership departures, mass layoffs, and player refund concerns around Ashes of Creation. Epic says transactions made through a console store, third-party mobile store, or developer-operated payment provider are governed by the policy at that point of purchase. Do not assume that a game stopping development automatically entitles you to a refund. The policy for your checkout and any applicable local rules determine what options are available; the Ashes of Creation report does not establish a general entitlement or precedent.

Choose between buying now, waiting, and passing
- Buy now: The playable content and condition meet your expectations at the current price, and the purchase makes sense even if planned features never arrive.
- Wait: You want more evidence, such as a further official update, clearer support information, a full release, or a lower price. Waiting may provide useful information, but it cannot guarantee a better outcome.
- Pass: The current game does not justify the price for you, or too much of its value depends on uncertain future content or support.
Before deciding, compare each option using the same questions: what is playable today, how recent and specific are official updates, how much does the purchase depend on promised content, who handles support, what refund terms apply, and whether waiting is likely to reveal information that matters to you.
