Your options depend on your country, what you bought, when and where you bought it, and whether the applicable law or store policy treats the content or service as defective or unavailable. Start with the platform or seller that processed the payment, then check the rules for your location.
What to check before requesting a refund
Refund eligibility can differ from one transaction to another, even within the same game. For each purchase, identify:

- Your country or region when you made the purchase.
- The seller or payment channel: for example, an app store, console or PC store, or the game publisher.
- The purchase date, item, and amount.
- Whether the item was virtual currency, a consumable, a subscription, or access to a feature or game.
- Whether the purchase is now wholly unavailable, partly usable, or still delivered as described.
These details matter because policies can vary by location, transaction date, payment method, and purchase type. A shutdown by itself does not settle whether a particular purchase qualifies.
How to make a request
- Find the transaction. Check your receipt or account purchase history and note the game, item, amount, date, and payment channel.
- Contact the channel that handled payment. Use that store’s refund process and select the policy for your country. For some purchase issues, Google says contacting the app developer may be the quickest way to resolve them.
- Explain what became unavailable. Give the shutdown date if known, identify what you bought, and say whether any part remains usable. A request is clearer when it describes the specific loss rather than relying only on the fact that the game closed.
- Keep supporting records. Save the receipt, shutdown announcement, terms shown at purchase, and correspondence with the store or publisher.
- If refused, check local options. Consumer-protection remedies depend on your jurisdiction and facts. A chargeback, regulator complaint, or legal claim is not guaranteed by the examples below.
What the rules say in specific cases
United Kingdom: statutory digital-content remedies
The UK Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides remedies when digital content fails to meet statutory requirements. Under section 45, if a consumer is entitled to a refund for affected digital content, the trader must pay without undue delay and within 14 days of agreeing that entitlement. The refund is generally made using the original payment method unless the consumer expressly agrees otherwise. Read section 45 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

This is the payment rule once entitlement is established; it does not mean every server closure automatically meets the legal test. The appropriate remedy may depend on how much content was affected. The Act’s explanatory notes also discuss trader-specific in-game currency: where a statutory refund is due for money paid to a trader for its own virtual currency, refunding only the currency may not satisfy the requirement to return money through the original payment method. In a written answer published on 11 March 2025, the UK government said it had no plans at that time to amend consumer law on digital obsolescence and noted that UK law did not require software companies to support older product versions. Google Play: EEA and UK policy
Google says most Google Play purchases are not refunded under its general policy, though exceptions apply. For games and in-app purchases in the European Economic Area (EEA) and UK, its policy says that agreeing to immediate access to digital content waives the automatic statutory withdrawal right. It also says a refund or another remedy may be available if digital content is defective, unavailable, or does not perform as stated; the policy distinguishes digital content from digital services. That regional policy applies to people in the EEA or UK and purchases made on or after 28 March 2018. Google notes that rules vary by what was bought, when and how it was paid for, and where the customer lives. Check the policy for your own location and transaction rather than applying the EEA/UK terms elsewhere. Check Google’s refund policy and regional guidance.

Apple: submit a request, then wait for a decision
Apple says some App Store and other Apple-service purchases may be eligible for a refund; its instructions do not promise approval just because a game has shut down. To submit a request, sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose “Request a refund,” select a reason and item, and submit. Apple says it provides an update within 24 to 48 hours. That is the stated time for an update, not a promise that a refund will be approved or paid within that period. Regional consumer-law protections may also apply. A shutdown may prevent access to the game while leaving some questions unresolved: whether the purchase was for digital content or a service, whether anything remains usable, which seller took payment, and what the applicable law or terms require. A consumed item, remaining virtual currency, subscription, and access entitlement may not be treated identically. Describe the particular purchase and what happened to it, then assess each transaction under the relevant local rules.
