Yes—an individual user can hide AI Inbox in Gmail, but that does not delete the underlying service. On a computer, open Settings → See all settings → Inbox, clear Show AI Inbox, and save if Gmail presents a save control. For a work or school account, only a Google Workspace administrator can control whether the organization is eligible for AI Inbox, whether users can access Gemini, and whether Gemini may use Workspace data such as Gmail messages.
The right setting depends on what you mean by “disable”: hiding one panel, blocking access for an organization, or stopping AI features from using Workspace content are separate controls.

What Gmail AI Inbox does
AI Inbox is a Gmail view intended to help you catch up on important mail. Google says it reviews messages in the Primary tab and surfaces top priorities and topics. It filters out messages that are in Spam, archived, deleted, muted, or snoozed.

Because the feature is generated from eligible messages rather than stored as a separate mailbox folder, hiding the panel is a display choice. It should not be treated as deletion of generated data, removal of Gemini from the account, or a guarantee that no other Google AI surface is available.
Who can use AI Inbox
Availability is limited. Google’s current AI Inbox requirements state that the feature is available only in the United States and in English.
Personal Google accounts
A personal account needs an eligible Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro, or Google AI Ultra plan. Without one of those plans, the AI Inbox controls may not appear even when ordinary Gmail smart features are enabled.

Work and school accounts
A Workspace account needs Workspace Enterprise Plus with access to Gemini Beta. The administrator, not the individual user, controls whether the organization receives that Beta access. AI Inbox also requires Gmail smart features in Google Workspace and smart features in other Google products to be turned on.
These requirements explain why two Gmail accounts on the same computer can show different options. A missing panel or checkbox is often an eligibility or policy issue, not a browser fault.

How to hide AI Inbox for your own account
The documented user-level control is in Gmail’s full settings on a computer.
- Open Gmail in a desktop browser.
- Click Settings (the gear icon).
- Select See all settings.
- Open the Inbox tab.
- Find Show AI Inbox and clear the checkbox.
- Use Gmail’s save control if one appears, then return to your inbox.
This changes whether AI Inbox is displayed for that user. It does not revoke Gemini access, change the organization’s Beta eligibility, or turn off other smart features. If you later want the panel back, repeat the same path and select Show AI Inbox again.

Google’s AI Inbox help covers computer, Android, and iPhone/iPad availability, but the explicit Show AI Inbox checkbox procedure is documented under the computer instructions. In practice, use Gmail on a computer when you need the specific visibility switch.
Google says account-level smart-feature choices are intended to apply across signed-in devices and apps. A change made on the web may not appear immediately in a mobile Gmail app; close and reopen the app, allow time for synchronization, and check again before assuming the setting failed. This delay affects the display of a setting, not your mailbox messages.
Five control layers that are easy to confuse
AI Inbox sits inside a broader set of Gmail, Gemini, and Workspace policies. The following table shows what each layer controls and what it does not.

What a Workspace administrator can do
Block eligibility before users see AI Inbox
An administrator can decide whether the organization receives access to Gemini Beta. If Beta access is not enabled for the organization, eligible users cannot use AI Inbox, even if they would otherwise meet the plan and language requirements.
Restrict Gemini completely
Google’s Workspace data-control guidance says an administrator can restrict a user’s access to Gemini and its features. This is an access decision, not merely a user-interface preference. It can prevent users from using Gemini surfaces that the administrator has disabled.
Allow Gemini but block Workspace data
Administrators can also allow Gemini features while preventing Gemini from using Workspace data available to the account, including Gmail messages. This is the relevant policy choice when an organization wants to evaluate Gemini but does not want Gmail content supplied to those experiences.
Review Gemini Enterprise and agents separately
Google documents separate administrative controls for Gemini Enterprise and its agents. Turning off AI Inbox does not automatically remove those products or every Gemini entry point; administrators should review each applicable policy in the Admin console.
Understand user settings are subordinate to policy
Users may be able to change smart-feature settings when the administrator allows it. If a policy forces a feature on or off, the user-facing switch may be unavailable or may not change the organization’s effective configuration.

How to choose the correct way to disable it
Only the panel is unwanted
Use Settings → See all settings → Inbox → Show AI Inbox and clear the checkbox. This is the narrowest change and leaves other Gemini and smart features untouched.
The organization should not offer AI Inbox
A Workspace administrator should review Gemini Beta eligibility for the organization. Removing eligibility addresses access for work and school accounts rather than relying on each employee to hide the panel.
Users should not access Gemini
Use the administrator’s Gemini access restrictions. This is broader than AI Inbox and can affect the Gemini app and other Gemini features.
Gemini must not process Gmail or other Workspace content
Review the Workspace smart-feature and Gemini data-access policies. Disabling the visual AI Inbox checkbox does not establish that Gmail messages are unavailable to all Gemini experiences.

Review the separate Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet setting. Do not assume that this switch is the same as Smart features in Google Workspace; Google assigns them different scopes.
Why AI Inbox may be missing or impossible to turn off
- Region or language: Google lists availability only for the United States and English.
- Wrong account type or plan: Personal accounts need an eligible Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra plan; work and school accounts need Workspace Enterprise Plus with Gemini Beta access.
- Administrator policy: The organization may not have enabled Beta features, may have restricted Gemini, or may have disabled the smart features required by AI Inbox.
- Required smart features are off: AI Inbox requires Gmail smart features in Google Workspace and smart features in other Google products.
- Mobile timing: A web change may not immediately be reflected in a phone app.
- Generation delay: Even after enabling the prerequisites, initial to-dos and topics can take several hours and up to seven days to appear.
If the Show AI Inbox option is absent in a personal account, first verify the account’s plan, region, and language. In a work or school account, contact the Workspace administrator; an end user cannot create Gemini Beta eligibility or override an administrative restriction.
Does turning off Smart features remove every Gemini experience?
No single Gmail checkbox is documented as a universal “remove Gemini everywhere” switch. Google separates the Gmail/Chat/Meet smart-feature setting from the broader Workspace smart-feature setting, and administrators have additional Gemini access and data-use controls.
Turning off Smart features in Google Workspace removes the Workspace experiences listed by Google until the setting is turned on again. The Gmail/Chat/Meet setting addresses in-product smart features and personalization. An administrator who needs a complete organizational restriction should review Gemini access, Workspace-data use, Gemini Enterprise, agents, and any applicable Beta policy rather than relying on the AI Inbox visibility checkbox.

There are three different questions to ask:
- Can I see AI Inbox? The user checkbox answers this visibility question.
- Can my account use Gemini? Workspace Gemini access and Beta policies answer this service-access question.
- Can Gemini use content available in my Workspace account? The Workspace smart-feature and data-access controls answer this data-use question.
Keeping these questions separate prevents a common mistake: hiding a panel and assuming that every Gemini feature, or every use of Gmail data, has been disabled.
How to restore AI Inbox later
If you only cleared the checkbox, return to Gmail on a computer and select Show AI Inbox again under Settings → See all settings → Inbox. If the option no longer appears, check whether the account still meets the plan, region, language, and administrator requirements. For Workspace accounts, an administrator may need to restore Gemini Beta eligibility or lift a policy restriction before the user can enable the feature.
After smart features are restored, Gmail may need time to regenerate topics and to-dos. Google’s stated window is several hours and up to seven days for the first results.
Practical checklist for users and administrators
Individual user
- Decide whether you want to hide only AI Inbox or stop broader AI experiences.
- For a visual change, clear Show AI Inbox in Gmail’s Inbox settings on a computer.
- For data-use concerns, review both smart-feature settings, not just the Inbox tab.
- Allow for synchronization time on mobile devices.
Workspace administrator
- Confirm whether the organization uses Workspace Enterprise Plus and whether Gemini Beta is enabled.
- Decide whether Gemini should be available at all.
- If Gemini is allowed, decide whether it may use Gmail and other Workspace data.
- Review Gemini Enterprise, agents, and related policies separately.
- Communicate whether users may control their own smart-feature preferences or whether policy fixes the setting.
Bottom line
For one Gmail user, clearing Show AI Inbox is the official way to hide the panel. For a work or school account, that checkbox is only the narrowest layer: Workspace administrators control Gemini Beta eligibility, Gemini access, and whether Gemini can use Gmail and other Workspace data. Match the control to the outcome you need—visibility, service access, or data use—because disabling one does not automatically disable the others.
