Can You Convert Xbox 360 and Original Xbox Discs to Digital?

Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs cannot be converted with Xbox’s 2026 disc-to-digital feature. Select games work through backward compatibility, but you still need the disc to play.

No. Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature announced in August 2026 covers supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, not Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs. Some older games can still be played on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility, but a disc-based copy must stay in the drive while you play.

What Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature covers

In its August 26, 2026 announcement, Xbox said players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. Xbox said, “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” Its announcement does not include Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs, so do not assume an older disc can be converted. Xbox described the starting selection as “thousands of titles”; that figure refers to the announced feature, not a count of eligible Xbox 360 or original Xbox games. Xbox Wire’s announcement also says the original disc continues to work as before, while digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming apply where supported.

What you can do with an Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc

Instead of converting the disc, you may be able to play the game on a newer Xbox through backward compatibility. Xbox supports select Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. For a compatible disc game, the console downloads game files to its storage, but the disc must remain inserted to verify play. Backward compatibility is free for supported games; it does not create a digital license from the disc. See Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog and search for the exact title, because support is not universal.

Check the console’s disc support

  • Xbox One: It can play supported backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs.
  • Xbox Series X: A disc-drive model can play supported older game discs through backward compatibility. The disc remains required.
  • Xbox Series S: It is digital-only and cannot read physical discs.

Check both that your exact game appears in Xbox’s catalog and that the console you plan to use has a disc drive. A compatible game on a Series S does not make your physical disc playable there.

What happened to the Xbox 360 Store?

New purchases from the Xbox 360 Store on console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace stopped on July 29, 2024. The closure did not remove access to previously purchased content: Xbox said owners could continue playing and re-downloading it. Xbox also said hundreds of backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games and DLC would remain available to buy through Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com. Availability is title-specific, and buying a digital copy is separate from owning a disc; the store closure did not turn discs into digital entitlements. Xbox’s store-closure announcement explains the distinction.

Online features may differ on older games

Xbox notes that original Xbox games played on newer consoles do not retain the original Xbox Live multiplayer service or in-game marketplaces. Offline multiplayer remains available when the original game included it. For other online functions, availability can depend on the game and its publisher, so backward compatibility should not be taken as a guarantee that every original online feature still works.

How to choose the right route

  1. Look up the exact game in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog.
  2. If you want to use your physical copy, choose a compatible Xbox One or a disc-drive Xbox Series X. Xbox Series S cannot read the disc.
  3. Insert the disc and allow the console to download the required game files. Keep the disc inserted whenever you play.
  4. If you want to play without the disc, check whether Xbox sells a digital version of that title for your console. A digital purchase is a separate license, not a conversion of your disc.

A generic external optical drive or disc-ripping device is not a way to claim an Xbox digital license. Xbox’s announced process is specific to eligible discs, titles, and consoles; it does not offer that route for Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs.
