Short answer: buying a game digitally gives your Microsoft account a digital-game license under Xbox’s usual account and Home console rules. Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature lets you claim a digital entitlement for an eligible physical disc, but Microsoft’s current rules condition that entitlement on continuing to possess the qualifying disc. It is not a way to sell the disc and keep an unconditional digital copy.
How Xbox disc-to-digital works
Xbox announced disc-to-digital on August 26, 2026. To claim an entitlement, insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into a supported console and launch the game. Xbox said the rollout would start with thousands of titles, with more added over time; not every title would be available at launch. Xbox’s announcement described testing for Xbox Insiders beginning August 31, 2026.

Eligibility is title-specific. Microsoft says technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons can affect whether a disc qualifies, and it may add or remove eligible discs. Check the current eligibility for the exact game rather than assuming every Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc is supported. Microsoft’s usage rules describe the entitlement as conditional and subject to revalidation.

| Question | Buying digitally | Disc-to-digital |
|---|---|---|
| What provides access? | A digital-game license associated with your Microsoft account, governed by Xbox’s ordinary digital-game rules. | An entitlement claimed using an eligible physical disc. |
| Must you keep the disc? | No qualifying disc is required for the digital license. | Yes. Microsoft says the entitlement remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc; access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess it. |
| Can the license be transferred separately? | Digital goods are licensed, not sold, and remain subject to Microsoft account and service rules. | No. Microsoft says the entitlement cannot be transferred separately from the disc. |
| Does it work for every game disc? | Availability is determined by the digital offering for the title. | No. Only eligible discs qualify, and Microsoft may change eligibility. |
Microsoft’s current terms state: “The digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc.” Read the current usage rules for the controlling conditions.

Can you play without the disc or sell it?
The feature provides digital benefits after the entitlement is claimed, but it does not remove the continued-possession condition. If you sell, give away, or otherwise stop possessing the qualifying disc, Microsoft says the digital access may be suspended or revoked. Do not treat disc-to-digital as a permanent replacement that lets you dispose of the disc while keeping the entitlement.
The physical disc also continues to work as it did before, according to Xbox’s announcement. The claimed entitlement and the disc’s existing use are distinct: the entitlement adds digital access subject to Microsoft’s conditions; it does not convert the physical copy into an unconditional account purchase.

Play Anywhere
Participating digital games can be played on Xbox, Windows PC, and supported handhelds at no extra charge. A game can be signed in on only one device at a time. Check the title’s Play Anywhere status before counting on cross-device access. Xbox Play Anywhere details.

Which option makes sense?
- Choose a regular digital purchase if you do not want access to depend on keeping a specific disc, while bearing in mind that the game remains a licensed digital good governed by account, Home console, and service rules.
- Consider disc-to-digital if you already have a qualifying disc, want the supported digital benefits, and are willing to keep possessing that disc.
- Check eligibility and compatibility first if your game is not confirmed as supported, you use a Series S, or you expect to rely on Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming.
