If your VPN will not connect or feels unusually slow, first check whether the internet works with the VPN disconnected. Then compare another trusted network, server, and provider-supported protocol to narrow down whether the cause is your device, network, VPN app, or VPN service. A kill switch can also intentionally block internet access when a tunnel drops.
Start by finding out whether the problem is your internet or the VPN
Disconnect the VPN and try a website or another internet service. If it still does not work, troubleshoot the ordinary connection first; a VPN cannot restore internet access that is already down. If internet access works without the VPN, focus on the VPN app, its configuration, or how the current network handles VPN traffic.

- Restart your device.
- Check that the device’s date, time, and time zone are correct.
- Install available operating-system and VPN-app updates.
- If appropriate, restart the modem or router.

Try a different trusted network, such as a mobile hotspot if that is suitable. If the VPN connects there but not on your usual Wi-Fi, the original network, router, ISP, proxy, or firewall becomes a stronger suspect. If the VPN fails on multiple networks, look more closely at the app, account, configuration, device, or VPN service. This comparison narrows the possibilities but does not, by itself, identify the faulty component.

If you suspect Wi-Fi, a wired connection can be a useful comparison when your device supports it. It is an optional test—not a general VPN fix.
Check the VPN app, account, server, and protocol
- Confirm that your account is active and the app’s VPN configuration is current.
- Check your provider’s service status and troubleshooting instructions for your device or operating system.
- If the provider offers multiple servers, try another one. A problem limited to one server may not affect the rest of the service.
- If the app offers multiple protocols, test another option documented by your provider. Availability and behavior vary by provider, device, and network; a protocol change is not guaranteed to fix the connection or improve speed.
For example, Proton’s Windows troubleshooting guide suggests checking whether a particular server is causing the issue and trying supported protocol options. Follow the instructions for your own service rather than assuming all VPNs offer the same choices.

Look for interference from proxies, firewalls, or security software
A proxy, firewall, antivirus product, network filter, router, or second VPN can interfere with a tunnel. Check whether one of these is active and whether its settings changed around the time the problem began. Apple notes that third-party VPN and security software can affect connectivity; Proton’s Windows guide also addresses proxy and firewall interference.
If you conduct a controlled test that temporarily changes a security setting, do not leave protection disabled. Restore it afterward and follow your provider’s or administrator’s instructions. On a work or school network, ask the administrator before changing organization-managed settings.

For a work or school VPN, get help with managed settings
Some connection failures are not fixable in the client app. Certificates, authentication policies, server reachability, routing, and firewall rules may need attention from the organization or VPN provider. Microsoft’s guidance for Windows Always On VPN and manually configured IPsec connections identifies blocked UDP ports 500 or 4500, unreachable servers, and certificate or authentication problems as possible causes.
In those specific Windows deployments, error 809 can point to an unresponsive server or an intervening router, firewall, or NAT configuration. Error 812 can indicate an authentication-method mismatch. These clues are not universal definitions for errors in consumer VPN apps. Microsoft recommends checking client- and server-side logs for Always On VPN diagnosis; share logs only through approved support channels because they may contain account or device details. If the VPN connects but internet access stops, check the kill switch
A kill switch may block traffic outside the VPN tunnel if the connection becomes unstable or drops. This can look like an internet outage even though the feature is behaving as intended. Mozilla documents this behavior for its VPN in its kill switch guidance. Other services may implement the feature differently, so check your VPN’s documentation before changing its settings. If you rely on the protection, consider the privacy trade-off before disabling it.
Diagnose slow VPN speeds with comparisons
Compare the same activity with the VPN off and on, then test another trusted network. If your VPN app supports it, also compare another server and another provider-supported protocol. Keep other conditions as similar as possible so you can tell which change affects performance.

- If performance is poor even with the VPN off, investigate the general internet connection first.
- If it improves on another network, the original network or its handling of VPN traffic may be involved.
- If only one server performs poorly, compare with another server offered by your provider.
- If a different supported protocol changes performance, the better result may depend on that provider, device, and network.
Network treatment of VPN traffic can affect reliability and performance. Android Open Source Project guidance discusses how network handling of ESP and UDP port 4500 timeouts can affect VPNs, but it is intended for network operators, not a consumer tuning checklist: Android VPN guidance. There is no single speed-loss percentage that reliably describes every VPN, device, protocol, and network.
