If by “AV cord” you mean the familiar composite cable with yellow video and red/white audio plugs, a PS4 has no matching analog AV output. Sony says PS4 video and audio are transmitted over HDMI and that the console does not support analog video or audio output. If your TV has only composite inputs, you need an active HDMI-to-composite converter between the PS4 and TV.
Why a standard AV cord will not work with a PS4
The PS4’s video and audio output is HDMI, a digital connection. Sony’s North American PS4 FAQ states: “No. PS4’s video and audio are transmitted using HDMI, a common digital connector found on most HD TVs.” The FAQ was published by Sony Computer Entertainment on October 30, 2013. A yellow/red/white RCA cord carries analog composite video and stereo audio. The plugs cannot be connected to the PS4’s HDMI OUT port, and a simple cable with HDMI on one end and RCA plugs on the other cannot do the required digital-to-analog conversion. A PS3 AV Multi Out cable is not a direct PS4 video solution either.

Connect the PS4 based on the TV’s inputs
If the TV or monitor has HDMI
- Connect an HDMI cable from the PS4’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI input on the display.
- Select that HDMI input on the TV or monitor.
- If there is no picture, check that the display is on the selected input and that both cable ends are fully seated. Sony’s PS4 setup instructions show HDMI as the normal connection.
If the TV has only yellow, red, and white RCA inputs
- Use an active HDMI-to-composite converter. Check the direction: it must accept HDMI input from the PS4 and provide composite RCA outputs for the TV. A device labeled “AV to HDMI” converts in the opposite direction and is not suitable.
- Connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT port to the converter’s HDMI input.
- Connect the converter’s yellow video output and red/white audio outputs to the matching RCA inputs on the TV.
- Connect the converter’s required USB or external power supply, then select the TV’s composite, AV, or similarly named input.
- Set the converter to the appropriate NTSC or PAL mode for the region and display, if it offers that setting.
One manufacturer-documented example of this converter category is Eaton’s P130-000-COMP. Its specifications describe an HDMI input, RCA outputs, external power, and conversion from an HDMI source to RCA A/V ports. This is an example of the connection type, not a guarantee of compatibility with every PS4, display, region, resolution, or protected video source. See the manufacturer’s specifications.

What changes when HDMI is converted to composite
The RCA connection is standard-definition composite, not a way to preserve HDMI picture quality. Sony’s 2013 FAQ lists PS4 HDMI video formats of 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. Those launch-era formats should not be taken to mean every display or converter accepts every mode. For its P130-000-COMP, Eaton specifies composite output up to 480i NTSC or 576i PAL. That figure applies to that product, not to every converter.
Before choosing a converter, check its supported HDMI input modes, composite output standard, power requirements, and content-protection compatibility. If the image or sound does not appear, consult the converter’s manual and the TV’s input instructions. A converter’s published specifications do not establish that it will work with every PS4 and source.

Do not confuse optical audio with an AV output
Some PS4 models have a DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) port for digital audio equipment, but optical does not carry video to a composite-only TV. Sony notes that CUH-2000 series consoles do not have an optical output terminal. Check your specific model before planning an optical audio connection. Sony’s PS4 audio-output instructions explain the setting and model caveat; the model-specific CUH-72XXB safety guide lists HDMI OUT and DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) for that model family.
