For reading PDFs, adding highlights or notes, and filling out many basic forms, Microsoft Edge may be enough to skip a paid Acrobat subscription. It is not a like-for-like replacement for every PDF job: Acrobat’s paid plans include editing and document tools, while Acrobat Pro adds redaction, web-form creation, and making scanned PDFs editable. The roughly US$180 figure in the headline matches Adobe’s current US annual price for Acrobat Standard, not Pro.
What Edge can do with a PDF
Edge includes a built-in PDF reader, so you can open PDFs without installing a separate reader. Microsoft documents support for viewing and printing local, online, and embedded PDFs, along with filling basic forms, adding text notes, highlighting, and inking on a document. Edge can also validate certificate-based digital signatures. Microsoft’s technical documentation notes that the precise experience can vary by browser version and device.

Microsoft also lists saving PDF markup, summarizing PDFs with Copilot, and translating selected text among the reader’s capabilities. Availability and functionality for these features can vary by device, market, and browser version, so check what is available in your own Edge installation. Microsoft’s Edge PDF Reader page describes the current feature set.

Changing the PDF’s existing text
Edge’s documented PDF tools focus on reading, markup, and adding text; they do not establish that it can edit the underlying text and layout as a dedicated PDF editor can. If you need to revise existing copy, reorganize content, or convert a document as part of a regular workflow, compare that need against Acrobat’s plan features rather than assuming annotations are equivalent to editing.

Forms that depend on JavaScript or XFA
Edge can fill basic PDF forms, but Microsoft’s technical documentation says JavaScript forms and XML Forms Architecture (XFA) forms are unsupported. XFA is a legacy form format. A form that relies on either may fail to behave as expected in Edge; use the form provider’s recommended application or a PDF tool that supports that form when completion is essential.
Redaction, web forms, and scanned documents
Adobe lists redaction and creating web forms among Acrobat Pro’s advanced capabilities, along with turning scans into editable PDFs. These are distinct from covering text with a highlight or adding a note: redaction is intended to remove sensitive content, while a markup may leave the original content in the file. If you need genuine redaction, editable scans, or web-form creation, Edge’s documented reader features do not establish an equivalent workflow.

Decide based on the PDFs you actually handle
- Edge is a plausible replacement if your regular work is opening PDFs, reading and printing them, adding highlights or notes, and completing basic forms.
- Keep a dedicated PDF editor in the workflow if you need to edit existing text, convert or export files, or organize PDFs using tools beyond Edge’s documented reader capabilities.
- Choose a tool with the needed form support if a form does not work in Edge, especially when its provider says it uses JavaScript or XFA.
- Do not treat markup as redaction. If you must remove confidential information, use a tool with a genuine redaction feature and verify the result before sharing.
- Check your device and version. Microsoft says feature availability can vary by device, market, and Edge version, so confirm the specific tools you rely on before cancelling a plan.
What to consider before cancelling Acrobat
List the jobs you used Acrobat for over the past month, then identify which are reading and markup, basic form filling, or work requiring editing, advanced form compatibility, redaction, or scan conversion. Try the relevant PDFs in Edge and check that saved changes behave as needed. For important forms and sensitive documents, test with a non-confidential copy first and confirm the finished file in the application or workflow required by its recipient. The evidence cited here describes product capabilities and prices; it does not establish that either product is categorically more private or safer.
