You can make Windows feel substantially different with free tools for filename search, file management, app launching, and process investigation—but they do not combine into one complete replacement shell. The practical setup is modular: Everything finds names, Files offers another way to manage files, PowerToys Run launches apps and commands, and Process Explorer provides deeper process details. Replacing the Start menu is the least certain part of this setup.

What changes—and what does not

This collection shifts common tasks away from their familiar Windows interfaces. Instead of relying on one built-in tool for every job, you choose a separate app for each workflow. That can make searching and launching feel more keyboard-driven, give you a different file-browsing interface, and make process troubleshooting more detailed.

It is not a single unified Windows shell replacement. The tools have distinct roles, and the documented features do not establish that every Explorer or Task Manager function is covered. Keep the built-in tools available for tasks the alternatives do not handle.

Which free app handles each job?

Tool Best fit What its documentation covers Important limit
Everything Finding files and folders by name Filename search; NTFS indexing; configurable non-NTFS volumes and network shares Content search is unindexed and slow; NTFS indexing requires the service or administrator privileges.
Files Browsing and managing files Tabs, multiple layouts, rich previews, and cloud-file integration The documented features do not establish complete parity with every Explorer function.
PowerToys Run Launching apps and issuing commands Search for apps, files, folders, and running processes; calculations, unit conversion, and system commands PowerToys must run in the background; its Windows Search plugin uses the Windows Search Index service.
Process Explorer Investigating processes and loaded components Processes, owning accounts, handles, DLLs, memory-mapped files, and handle/DLL searches Its detailed inspection role does not make it a proven substitute for every everyday Task Manager task.
Open-Shell Customizing the Start menu The project describes itself as “Classic Shell Reborn.” Current Windows compatibility and release details are unresolved in the project information reviewed.

Find files by name with Everything

Everything is a filename-first search tool: it indexes file and folder names rather than offering a fast, indexed search of file contents. voidtools explains that it updates NTFS indexes using the USN Journal. For NTFS indexing, the Everything service must be installed or the app must run with administrative privileges. Non-NTFS volumes and network shares can be added through its settings.

#1 Best Overall

That distinction matters when choosing where to search. Use Everything when you remember a name or part of a path. Do not assume it will quickly search inside documents: its FAQ says content is not indexed and that content search is slow. See the Everything FAQ for the indexing and configuration details.

Browse files in Files

Files is an open-source Windows file explorer with a different interface for day-to-day browsing. Its official site highlights tabs, multiple layouts, rich previews, and cloud-file integration. Those features make it a plausible alternate file manager, but they do not prove that it reproduces every Explorer shell integration or specialized behavior. Keep Explorer available when a workflow depends on a feature you have not confirmed in Files. Details are on the Files Community site.

Launch apps and commands with PowerToys Run

Microsoft documents PowerToys Run as a keyboard-first launcher and command surface. Its default shortcut is Alt+Space. It can search for apps, files, folders, and running processes, and it includes calculator functions, unit conversion, and system commands. Enable the utility in PowerToys and keep PowerToys running in the background for the shortcut to work. Microsoft’s PowerToys Run documentation lists its supported features.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

PowerToys Run does not eliminate every dependency on Windows Search. Its Windows Search plugin queries files and folders indexed by the Windows Search Index service, so that part of the workflow still relies on Windows indexing. The core launcher and its other command features remain separate from that plugin.

Inspect processes with Process Explorer

Process Explorer is useful when the question is more specific than “what is using my CPU?” Microsoft documents views of active processes and their owning accounts, along with handles, DLLs, and memory-mapped files. It can also search for the process that has a particular handle or DLL loaded. Those capabilities make it a deeper investigation tool for troubleshooting, not a blanket recommendation to abandon Task Manager for routine checks.

Microsoft’s current download page identifies Process Explorer v17.14, by Mark Russinovich, published September 10, 2026. Check the Process Explorer download page for the current release and documentation.

Can you replace the Windows Start menu?

Open-Shell’s repository describes the project as “Classic Shell Reborn,” but the project information reviewed does not settle its current Windows compatibility or release status. That is not enough to recommend it as a current Windows 11 Start-menu replacement. Before installing it, verify the project’s latest release and setup documentation against your Windows version in the Open-Shell repository.

Keyboard Manager in PowerToys can remap keys and create custom shortcuts, which may help bind a preferred shortcut to a launcher. Microsoft’s utilities overview documents those remapping capabilities, but does not establish a universal method to replace every Start-key or Search-key action. See Microsoft’s PowerToys overview.

A sensible way to adopt the setup

  1. Start with the job you want to change. Try Everything for filename searches, Files for browsing, or PowerToys Run for keyboard launching rather than changing every workflow at once.
  2. Check each tool’s prerequisites. For Everything, account for NTFS service or administrator requirements and configure other locations if needed. For PowerToys Run, enable it and keep PowerToys in the background.
  3. Keep built-in tools available while you learn the alternatives. The documented feature sets do not establish complete Explorer or Task Manager parity, and some PowerToys Run search behavior relies on Windows indexing.
  4. Treat Start customization as a separate decision. Confirm Open-Shell’s compatibility and current setup guidance for your Windows release before relying on it.
