Its design reflects that shift: documents stay in a folder you choose, while a Rust server indexes and serves them, with optional AI tools layered on top.
From too many documents to a library that follows you
In her account of building Kintara, Jessica Doering describes a familiar accumulation: PDFs, Markdown files, and text documents scattered across interests and projects. She wanted a calmer way to organize them, not a sprawling document-management system.

The first version was a Tauri desktop application. Doering later shifted the project toward a Rust server with a browser interface. The reason was practical: a library stored alongside a NAS or other always-available machine should not be locked to one desktop. With the server running, the same collection can be opened from a desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone through a browser; the interface can also be installed as a progressive web app.

That pivot changed the project from a personal desktop tool into a self-hosted service. The underlying idea remained simple—point Kintara at a document folder—but supporting access from multiple devices brought in filesystem watching, accounts, permissions, OAuth, and deployment choices.

What Kintara is documented to do
Kintara’s project README describes a self-hosted library and reader that accepts PDFs, Markdown, and plain text. It scans a document folder, extracts searchable text and metadata, and creates thumbnails. Readers can organize material with libraries, collections, and tags; search full text; and track favorites, highlights, and reading progress.
The documentation also describes manual imports, streamed PDF viewing with HTTP Range support, and batched library views. Sharing options include private sharing and viewer or editor access, while invitation-based account creation and GitHub OAuth provide account controls. These are capabilities described by the project, not results of an independent test.

- FAST SPEEDS - Scans color and black and white documents a blazing speed up to 16ppm (1). Color scanning won’t slow you down as the color scan speed is the same as the black and white scan speed.
- ULTRA COMPACT – At less than 1 foot in length and only about 1. 5lbs in weight you can fit this device virtually anywhere (a bag, a purse, even a pocket).
- READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
The architecture uses one Rust server for both the API and frontend. The README lists container-image support for linux/amd64 and linux/arm64, making the deployment model relevant to a range of common server hardware. The key design distinction is that Kintara serves a folder-based library; it does not require moving the documents into a proprietary cloud service.
How the Docker layout separates documents from app data
The Compose setup described in the README expects Docker Engine with the Compose plugin, a document folder, a local data folder, and a GitHub OAuth app. You also need user and group IDs that can access the document directory. The document folder can be an existing NAS share; buying a NAS is not a prerequisite.

| Location | What it contains | Project guidance |
|---|---|---|
/library |
Your document folder, which may be an existing NAS share | Can be read and scanned if mounted read-only, but uploads, cover writes, and permanent deletion need write access. |
/data |
SQLite database, thumbnails, sessions, and the key used to encrypt saved AI provider keys | Keep on local storage, not SMB or NFS. The README warns that SQLite can be corrupted on a network filesystem. |
This separation matters more than whether the documents themselves live on a NAS. Kintara can read documents from a network share while keeping its database and other application state on local storage.
Filesystem watching is not guaranteed on every share
Kintara can watch for changes to the document folder, but some network shares do not report filesystem events in a way the watcher can use. For those shares, the README suggests disabling live watching while retaining startup scanning. The library can still be scanned at startup, but new-file discovery may not be immediate.

Backups and updates
The README recommends backing up the complete /data directory, including the database and encryption key, and stopping Kintara before copying it so the SQLite backup is consistent. It also advises making a backup before updating. Because the encryption key is stored with the application data, preserve the whole directory rather than treating the database file as the only important piece.

Why the AI features are optional—and how they are described
Doering presents AI as an optional set of helpers rather than a requirement for organizing or reading the library. The essay describes document summaries, metadata suggestions, generated covers, library search, and question answering over documents. Suggestions may include a title, author, summary, keywords, DOI, ISBN, and publication year; the user chooses which fields to apply.

For passage search, Doering says a model returns passages and page numbers, after which the server checks the quoted text against extracted page text and the reader checks it against rendered PDF content. Quotes that do not match are dropped. This describes Kintara’s stated verification flow, not a guarantee that AI search is always accurate.
The README says each user must save a provider key and enable AI, and that saved keys are encrypted before they enter SQLite rather than being sent back to the browser as saved keys. It also says requests through OpenAI Responses and Google Interactions use store: false. Image generation has no corresponding retention setting, and Kintara discloses that before the request. The project further says it does not run background AI processing. Those statements describe Kintara’s implementation and do not establish how a provider handles data beyond the settings and disclosures documented by the project.
What the project’s current limits mean in practice
- One document root per installation: the README lists one document root, so separate top-level roots require a different organization strategy than mounting multiple roots independently.
- No OPDS feed: readers looking for an OPDS catalog endpoint should not assume Kintara provides one.
- PDF navigation gaps: the documented reader does not support pinch zoom or swipe paging, which may matter most on phones and tablets.
- OAuth depends on complete configuration: the README says login remains disabled unless all three documented GitHub OAuth variables are set.
These constraints help set expectations: Kintara is a self-hosted library and reader with organization, search, and sharing features, not a replacement for every ebook catalog or mobile PDF-reader workflow.
Who the project is for
Kintara makes most sense for someone who already has a collection of PDFs, Markdown, and text files, wants to keep them in a folder they control, and is comfortable running a Docker service. The browser-based approach is especially useful when the collection lives on a machine or NAS share that can be reached from more than one device.
It is less suited to someone who needs multiple document roots in one installation, an OPDS feed, or touch-oriented PDF controls such as pinch zoom and swipe paging. Doering’s invitation is appropriately low-pressure: if you have “accumulated an actual ton of pdfs and markdown files,” the project is available to explore through its repository.
