There is no single Settings path that makes a third-party launcher the default on every Android TV or Google TV device. Google documents ways to customize the built-in Home screen, but whether you can select another app to handle the Home button depends on your TV or streaming device, manufacturer and software version. Check the exact model before trying device-specific workarounds.
What does “set a launcher as default” mean?
Changing rows, previews or recommendations on the built-in Home screen is not the same as making another app open when you press Home. Google documents personalization controls for the stock screen, but those controls do not designate a different app as the system Home activity. At the Android system level, CATEGORY_HOME identifies the Home activity—the activity first displayed when the device boots. A separate category, CATEGORY_LEANBACK_LAUNCHER, identifies activities intended to appear in the TV app launcher. - Identify the device. Note the manufacturer, exact TV or streaming-device model, whether its interface is Android TV or Google TV, and the current software version.
- Check the manufacturer’s support information. Look for a model-specific Home app or default-app selector. There is no verified universal consumer Settings route in the official guidance cited here.
- Install and open the alternative launcher first. Confirm it works on the device before changing how Home is handled.
- Find current instructions for that exact device and software. Do not assume that steps, package names or recovery commands for another model apply to yours.

Why does the Home button keep returning to the stock launcher?
The alternative launcher may be installed and visible in the TV app grid without being selected to handle the system Home action. Android treats TV app visibility and the Home activity as separate roles. If the manufacturer does not provide a selector, a workaround documented for one device or software configuration may not transfer to another.

The community-maintained LTvLauncher README describes an Accessibility-based Home Button Fix and an ADB approach that disables a named stock Google TV launcher package on some configurations. It also documents package re-enabling as a fallback. These are project-specific examples, not official Google instructions or proof of compatibility across manufacturers and updates. Follow the project’s current directions only if they explicitly match your device, and do not reuse its package commands as universal instructions.
What if you only want to change the stock Home screen?
Use the Home screen settings available on your device to customize the built-in interface. The specific options and route vary, and Google notes that some TVs do not have these settings. This changes the stock Home experience rather than selecting another app to handle Home.

Google also documents an experimental “Optimize Home & Apps tabs” setting. Where available, it can be turned off in the Home screen’s Experimental section and applied by restarting the TV. It adjusts the Home and Apps tab experience; it does not set a different Home activity. Its availability and rollout may change. See Optimize Home & Apps tabs on Android TV.
Use ADB only with a device-specific recovery plan
ADB and package-level changes can disable the stock launcher, which may make the original interface harder to reach. Before proceeding, verify both the change and the recovery steps against the manufacturer’s or launcher project’s instructions for your exact model and software. Do not run a command merely because it names a Google TV package: package identifiers differ across devices and platform generations, and the wrong change can leave you without an easy route back to the stock Home screen.

Android’s documentation for custom Home apps describes making a preferred Home handler in managed dedicated-device deployments. That is developer guidance for managed devices, not a general consumer setup procedure.
