Yes—but export and verify your data before cancelling, and do not delete either account until the archive is safe. ChatGPT and Claude provide official exports, while Gemini can retain imported chats; Google does not promise a complete Claude-to-Gemini migration of memories, files, projects or custom instructions.
Use this order to protect your conversations
Cancellation normally changes billing, not the existence of your account. Account deletion is a separate, usually irreversible action. Follow the sequence below while you can still sign in to both services.

Start a ChatGPT export
In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Data controls → Export. You can also request the archive through the OpenAI Privacy Portal. OpenAI says the ZIP contains your chat history and other relevant account data. The export may take up to seven days to arrive, and the download link expires after 24 hours.

Start a Claude export
On the Claude website or Claude Desktop, go to Settings → Privacy → Export data. Anthropic says the export includes conversation data and user data for the account. Claude sends a download link by email; that link also expires after 24 hours. The Claude mobile apps cannot initiate an export, so use the web interface or Desktop.

Download and inspect both archives
Do not treat the arrival of an email as proof that the backup worked. Download each ZIP, open it, and search for several known conversations from different dates. OpenAI specifically advises checking that the archive contains the conversations you need. Confirm that files or other account data you rely on are present where the export says they should be.

Prepare only the material Gemini can use
Gemini’s official privacy information describes imported chats as Gemini Apps activity, but it does not document complete compatibility with Claude’s export format. Keep the original ZIPs untouched and make a separate, clearly named copy of any conversations or documents you decide to upload or paste into Gemini.

Keep an independent backup
Store the original archives somewhere you control, such as an encrypted USB flash drive. A second encrypted copy in a trusted cloud-storage account is useful if the data is important. These files can contain sensitive conversations, account identifiers and uploaded material; protect them like financial records rather than ordinary downloads.

Cancel the subscription through its billing platform
Cancel ChatGPT where you were charged: the ChatGPT website, Apple App Store or Google Play each has a separate subscription path. Uninstalling an app does not stop recurring billing. For any subscription, check the confirmation screen and retain the receipt or cancellation email.

Postpone account deletion
Keep the ChatGPT and Claude accounts open until you have tested the archive and are satisfied with the Gemini copy. OpenAI says account deletion is permanent and that data is deleted within 30 days, subject to limited legal or security exceptions. Claude’s export guidance does not promise that you can retrieve an export after closing the account.

An export is an archive, not a promise that another assistant can recreate the original interface. Conversation text may survive while relationships between chats, attached files, project settings, memories, tool connections or metadata do not.
Can Gemini import a ChatGPT or Claude export?
ChatGPT to Gemini
ChatGPT gives you an official ZIP, which is the safest source for preserving your history. The reviewed Google documentation does not state that Gemini will ingest that ZIP and rebuild your ChatGPT account. If your Gemini account offers an import feature, follow the file-type and size instructions shown there. Otherwise, use the export as a reference archive and move important conversations manually by uploading supported files or copying selected text.

Claude to Gemini
Anthropic provides a downloadable export, but says exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. That statement concerns Claude accounts; it does not establish a Claude-to-Gemini importer. Google’s published Gemini privacy information likewise does not guarantee direct Claude-format compatibility. Treat any apparent import success as a convenience, not proof that every conversation, attachment or setting transferred.
Information that is not guaranteed to migrate
- Saved memories or personalization profiles.
- Custom instructions and assistant preferences.
- Uploaded files, images and their links to individual messages.
- Projects, folders, shared workspaces and project-level instructions.
- Tool connections, external integrations and permissions.
- Conversation timestamps, titles, identifiers, reactions and other metadata.
For work or study records, create a small migration inventory. Mark each high-value conversation, note any required attachments, and test the resulting Gemini chat before assuming the record is complete.
Cancellation, subscription expiry and account deletion are different
What cancelling ChatGPT does
OpenAI’s wording is precise: “Canceling stops future renewals. It does not automatically refund previous charges.” Your account and existing conversations are therefore not the same thing as the subscription renewal. A cancellation should stop the next charge according to the applicable billing period; it is not a command to erase your history.

What deleting ChatGPT does
OpenAI describes account deletion as permanent. It says data is deleted within 30 days, except for limited data retained longer where required or permitted by law. Deleting a ChatGPT account also does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription, so Apple billing must be cancelled separately.
What closing Claude means for your archive
Anthropic says its export includes conversation and account data, but its export instructions do not promise post-closure access. Keep the downloaded file and verify it before closing the account. If you still need a conversation that was not in the archive, leaving the account active gives you a better chance to resolve the omission.
What happens to imported chats in Gemini
Google says imported chats are stored in Gemini Apps activity. You can delete an individual imported chat or bulk-delete all imported chats associated with the ZIP used to import them. Deleting the Gemini copy does not delete the original ChatGPT or Claude archive, so retain your independent backup until your retention decision is final.
Billing paths that commonly cause mistakes

Save the cancellation confirmation, then check the next invoice or account status. If a charge still appears, contact the billing platform before deleting the AI account; deletion can make account-based support harder.
Gemini retention and privacy settings to review
Moving your chats does not automatically make them private or permanent. Gemini offers auto-delete choices of three, 18 or 36 months, or indefinite retention. Choose the period that matches your record-keeping needs, and remember that an auto-delete policy can remove imported material sooner than you expect.

Google also states that data reviewed by human reviewers may be retained for up to three years after the related activity is deleted. Avoid uploading secrets, regulated records or someone else’s personal information unless you understand the applicable Gemini settings and have permission to process that material.
After importing, open Gemini Apps activity and confirm that the chats you expect are present. If you later delete an imported chat there, use the individual-delete or bulk-delete control deliberately: bulk deletion associated with a ZIP can remove the entire imported set.

- Both export requests were submitted from the correct accounts.
- The ChatGPT ZIP opens and includes representative conversations.
- The Claude ZIP opens and includes conversation and user data.
- Any export link was used before its 24-hour expiry.
- Important attachments were saved separately if they were not embedded in the archive.
- A second protected copy exists outside the AI service.
- Key conversations were tested in Gemini rather than assumed to be complete.
- Subscription cancellation confirmation was saved.
- Account deletion has been postponed until all of the above checks pass.
Common failure cases and recovery steps
The export email never arrives
Check the account’s verified email address, spam and filtering rules, then confirm that you requested the export while signed in to the intended account. Because ChatGPT exports can take up to seven days, do not cancel access or delete the account while you are still waiting for the archive.
The download link expired
Request a new export rather than relying on an old email. Both ChatGPT and Claude links are stated to expire after 24 hours, so download promptly and store the file before starting another billing or deletion step.

Search the archive for older and newer conversations, check whether you used multiple login methods or accounts, and compare the result with the service’s visible history. Keep the account active while you investigate; do not assume that a partial archive is the complete record.

Gemini accepted a file but the result is incomplete
Preserve the original ZIP, identify which conversations or attachments are absent, and move those items individually using formats Gemini accepts in your account. There is no documented guarantee that an imported file reproduces provider-specific memories, projects or metadata.
Should you delete the old accounts?
Deletion is optional. If your priority is stopping charges, cancellation is sufficient; you can keep a free account for occasional access while retaining the archive elsewhere. Delete only after you have checked contractual, workplace or legal retention requirements, confirmed that no subscription remains on another platform, and decided that the permanent loss of the provider-hosted history is acceptable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cancel while a ChatGPT export is still processing?
It is safer to wait. OpenAI says an export can take up to seven days, and you should verify the ZIP before changing billing or deleting the account.
Does uninstalling the ChatGPT or Claude app stop payment?
No. App removal does not cancel billing; cancel through the website, Apple App Store, Google Play or whichever platform issued the charge.
Is a successful Gemini import proof that nothing was lost?
