Yes, but only when your broker supports fractional orders for the specific Berkshire ticker you select. For most small-dollar investors, Class B stock (BRK.B) is the practical route. Berkshire Hathaway states that “Per share amounts for Class B shares are 1/1,500th of those shown for Class A shares.” That relationship makes BRK.B far less expensive per share than BRK.A, but it does not automatically make either ticker fractionally tradable. Fractional investing is a broker feature, with its own minimums, order rules, liquidity limits, voting treatment and transfer restrictions.
What “fractional Berkshire” actually means
There are two separate ideas that are often confused:

- BRK.A and BRK.B are separate listed share classes. BRK.B is not a broker-created slice of one BRK.A share.
- A fractional position is a broker-held piece of one share. For example, buying 0.25 BRK.B means you own a quarter of a Class B share through the broker’s fractional-share system.
Berkshire’s official second-quarter 2026 earnings release, dated August 8, 2026, states: Per share amounts for Class B shares are 1/1,500th of those shown for Class A shares.
That is the economic relationship between the classes. A broker may let you buy 0.1 BRK.B, but it may not permit 0.1 BRK.A. The class relationship does not override the broker’s ticker eligibility rules.

A fractional BRK.B position is therefore a fraction of the Class B share, not a fraction of a BRK.A share. The exact economic and operational treatment of your position depends on the broker holding it.

Why broker eligibility matters more than the ticker symbol
Fractional trading is not a right attached to a stock. It is an account service that a broker chooses to provide for particular securities. A broker can support fractional orders generally while excluding a specific ticker, share class or order type. Official broker pages reviewed for this topic describe fractional trading in general, but do not guarantee that BRK.A is eligible everywhere.
Check the live order ticket immediately before submitting an order. Do not rely on a list of “fractional stocks” from an old article, because eligibility, minimums and order handling can change.
How to check a ticker
- Open your broker’s stock-trading screen and search for the exact symbol:
BRK.AorBRK.B. - Choose the correct share class from the search results. Do not assume a result for one class applies to the other.
- Look for a dollar-based or fractional-share input. If the ticket accepts a dollar amount or a decimal share quantity, fractional ordering may be available.
- Read any warning beside the quantity field. Unsupported securities are commonly identified at order entry.
- Enter a small test amount and review the preview screen for the minimum order, estimated share quantity, order type and any fee disclosure.
- Cancel the order if the preview changes the amount, rejects the ticker or offers only a whole-share quantity.

What a fractional Berkshire order can cost
There is no single universal “cost of buying fractional Berkshire.” Your result combines the amount invested, the current quote, the bid-ask spread, the broker’s execution method, the account pricing plan and any minimum order rule. Because prices and fee schedules change, review the live order preview rather than applying an old fee example.

Minimum investment
Robinhood’s published disclosure requires at least $1 for a fractional order. That minimum applies to the fractional buy or sell order, not to a claim that every Berkshire ticker is available there. The dollar amount is converted into an equivalent share fraction at the applicable execution price.
For Fidelity and Interactive Brokers, the cited material does not establish one universal minimum specifically for BRK.A or BRK.B. The ticket may impose a security-specific or order-specific minimum, so enter the amount and read the preview.
Commissions and plan pricing
Interactive Brokers distinguishes between plans: IBKR Lite describes commission-free U.S. stock trading, while IBKR Pro uses fixed or tiered pricing. That distinction is separate from the stock’s market price and does not prove that every fractional order has identical execution economics.

Spread and execution
A fractional order still depends on market liquidity and the bid-ask spread. A tiny dollar order can receive a different effective price from a whole-share order if the broker aggregates orders, routes them at a particular time or limits the available order types. Compare the estimated execution price with the displayed quote, and avoid assuming that a “no commission” label means no trading cost.
Broker-specific details you should understand
Fidelity
Fidelity defines fractional shares as pieces of a stock or ETF and marks fractional orders “Not Held.” Its documentation warns that some fractional positions may be illiquid and that order types are limited. Fractional positions cannot be transferred and cannot be issued as stock certificates.
Fidelity also states that proxy voting may not apply to the fractional portion. Most voluntary corporate actions generally do not apply to that portion either. If voting or participation in a voluntary action matters to you, determine how the broker will handle the whole-share and fractional portions before buying.

Robinhood supports fractional orders for eligible NMS-listed stocks and ETFs. The order screen identifies unsupported securities, so search for the exact Berkshire symbol rather than assuming that support for one class means support for the other.

Fractional buy and sell orders must be at least $1. Robinhood converts a dollar order into an equivalent share quantity. Its disclosure says fractional shares are illiquid outside Robinhood and are not transferable as shares. During a full account transfer, the fractional position is sold for cash instead of moving as a fractional security.
Interactive Brokers
Interactive Brokers documents both dollar-amount orders and orders entered as a share fraction. It supports market and limit orders for fractional trading, giving you more order-type choice than a broker that accepts only a market-style fractional instruction.
Eligibility and transferability still apply. A ticker can be available for fractional purchase but restricted for transfer, or available under one account configuration and not another. Review the order ticket and the transfer rules before building a position you may later move.
How to buy a fractional BRK.B or BRK.A position
- Choose the class. Use BRK.B for the usual small-dollar approach, or select BRK.A only if you specifically want that class and your broker confirms fractional eligibility.
- Confirm the symbol. Search the live trade ticket and verify that the result is BRK.A or BRK.B, not a similarly named instrument.
- Set the order input. Enter a dollar amount if the broker supports dollar orders, or enter a decimal share quantity.
- Select an allowed order type. Some brokers restrict fractional trades to particular instructions; Interactive Brokers documents market and limit orders, while Fidelity warns that fractional order types are limited.
- Review the preview. Check the minimum, estimated fraction, quote, spread information, commission or plan charge and any warning about liquidity.
- Submit only after checking the result. Save the confirmation showing the dollar amount and fractional quantity for your records.
Choosing between BRK.A and BRK.B for a small account
BRK.B is generally the practical starting point because Berkshire states that its per-share amounts are 1/1,500 of the corresponding Class A amounts. That lower per-share amount lets an investor buy a small number of whole BRK.B shares when the account balance permits, and it makes a fractional BRK.B order easier to size in dollars.
BRK.A requires a separate eligibility check. Do not treat the 1/1,500 relationship as proof that a broker will accept a fractional BRK.A order. If the ticket does not offer fractional BRK.A, the only available quantity may be one whole share or no order at all.
Dividends, corporate actions and voting
Fractional ownership can be operationally different from whole-share ownership. Fidelity specifically warns that the fractional portion may not receive proxy-voting rights and that most voluntary corporate actions generally do not apply to it. Other brokers’ treatment is not established by the disclosures summarized here, so read the current corporate-action policy for your account.
Ask how the broker credits distributions, handles mandatory actions and rounds or cashes out fractional remnants before relying on a fractional position for a particular corporate event. Do not infer another broker’s policy from Fidelity’s or Robinhood’s disclosure.

Transferability is one of the biggest differences between whole and fractional shares. Fidelity says fractional positions cannot be transferred. Robinhood says fractional shares are not transferable and that a full account transfer sells the fractional portion for cash. Interactive Brokers warns that eligibility and transferability restrictions can apply.
A practical transfer may therefore contain two results: whole shares move to the receiving broker, while the fractional remainder is liquidated and delivered as cash. Before initiating a transfer, ask both firms whether BRK.A or BRK.B fractions can move, whether a partial transfer is treated differently from a full transfer and how the cash remainder will be reported in the account.
Limitations and common mistakes
- Assuming fractional support is universal: eligibility is ticker-specific and can differ between BRK.A and BRK.B.
- Confusing BRK.B with a fractional BRK.A: BRK.B is a separate listed class with a 1/1,500 per-share relationship stated by Berkshire.
- Ignoring the order minimum: Robinhood requires at least $1; other brokers may show different requirements in the ticket.
- Expecting every order type: fractional trading may have fewer choices than whole-share trading.
- Overlooking illiquidity: Fidelity warns that some fractional positions may be illiquid, and Robinhood says its fractions are illiquid outside the platform.
- Planning a transfer without checking: fractional holdings may be sold for cash or refused by the receiving broker.
- Assuming voting rights: Fidelity says proxy voting may not apply to the fractional portion.
- Using stale fee information: prices, spreads, plans and fee schedules change; use the current preview.
A pre-order checklist
- Have you selected the intended class, BRK.A or BRK.B?
- Does the live ticket accept a dollar amount or decimal share quantity for that exact ticker?
- What minimum does the ticket enforce?
- Which order types are available?
- What commission, plan charge or execution disclosure appears in the preview?
- Could the position be illiquid or difficult to transfer?
- How will the broker handle voting, distributions and corporate actions for the fraction?
- If you later move the account, will the fraction transfer or be sold for cash?
For most investors seeking a small Berkshire position, the decision is straightforward: check BRK.B first, verify fractional eligibility in the current trade ticket and read the broker’s transfer and corporate-action terms before submitting the order. BRK.A fractional ownership is possible only where the broker explicitly supports that ticker.
