No. Remove the old thermal paste from both the CPU and cooler before applying fresh paste. Intel’s support guidance is explicit: “Never add new TIM on top of used TIM.”
Why you should not put new thermal paste over old paste
Thermal paste is meant to fill tiny gaps between the processor’s heat spreader and the cooler’s contact surface. Layering fresh paste over used material is not the recommended installation method. It can leave the surfaces with an uneven or disturbed layer, rather than the clean contact needed for a fresh application. Intel advises removing used thermal interface material instead of adding new material on top of it.

That guidance does not establish that every paste-over-paste installation will damage a CPU; outcomes depend on the hardware and materials. The reliable procedure is to remove the old paste and start with a clean application.

What to clean before reapplying
Clean both surfaces whenever the cooler has been removed: the CPU’s integrated heat spreader and the cooler’s base. Noctua recommends cleaning both before reapplying paste. Check the processor, cooler, and paste instructions first, especially for laptops, exposed-die processors, unusual thermal interface materials, or liquid metal, which may require specific handling.
#1 Best Overall
- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
How to remove old thermal paste
- Check for pre-applied paste. If you are installing a new cooler and it has an intact factory-applied layer, do not add more paste unless the cooler maker instructs you to. Some coolers ship with paste already applied.
- Remove the cooler carefully. If old paste is present, gently wipe it from the CPU heat spreader and cooler base. Intel recommends isopropyl alcohol with a microfiber cloth or another suitable low-lint wiper. Noctua also identifies cleaning wipes as an option.
- Keep liquid and debris away from other components. Use only enough cleaner to remove the residue, and avoid touching the CPU’s gold contacts. Follow the hardware maker’s instructions for the specific processor and cooler.
- Wait until both surfaces are dry. Intel instructs users to let the alcohol dissipate before continuing. Do not apply new paste to a wet surface.
- Apply fresh paste and reinstall the cooler. Follow the paste and cooler manufacturers’ directions for the amount and pattern, then mount the cooler as instructed.
Isopropyl alcohol or cleaning wipes?
Both are reasonable choices when compatible with the manufacturer’s instructions. Intel describes isopropyl alcohol with an appropriate low-lint wiper; Noctua lists isopropyl alcohol or cleaning wipes. Wipes are a convenience, not a requirement established by these instructions. Use a suitable, low-lint material and keep cleaner away from other components.
How much fresh paste should you apply?
There is no single amount or spread pattern established for every CPU and cooler. Intel’s general guide suggests a small amount in the center, roughly the size of a grain of rice or a pea; cooler mounting pressure spreads it. Follow the specific paste or cooler directions if they give a different amount or pattern.

If you lift the cooler after mounting
If you remove or lift a cooler after it has been mounted, clean the disturbed paste from both contact surfaces and apply a fresh layer. Intel warns that reusing an application can introduce air bubbles and recommends cleaning and starting again.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- NEXT-LEVEL THERMAL PERFORMANCE: MX-7 features a performance-optimized, dense, and highly viscous consistency. Its high filler content ensures exceptional heat transfer
- LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
- PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
- SAFE FOR ALL DEVICES: MX-7 is electrically non-conductive and non-capacitive, making it completely safe for CPUs, GPUs, laptops, consoles, and other, no risk of short circuits or electrical discharge
- EFFORTLESS CLEANING WITH MX CLEANER: Removes old thermal paste thoroughly, preparing contact surfaces for optimal performance. Also available as a convenient bundle with MX-7
