Schools and colleges are using AI for more than tutoring: staff use it to prepare lessons and handle routine writing, while some programs apply it to math practice, science inquiry, feedback and classroom observation. These 11 examples show what those uses look like, but they are not 11 equally evaluated products or independent trials. Several are distinct workflows reported by Ofsted across a group of early-adopter providers.
What are 11 real examples of AI in education?
The examples below are organized by task and setting. Ofsted’s 2025 account draws on interviews with leaders at 21 schools, colleges and trusts that had been embedding generative AI for at least 12 months. Its findings document reported practices, not a nationally representative census. The English examples are uses within that provider group, not separate named deployments.

| # | Example and setting | What AI is used for | Stage and evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Early-adopter schools, colleges and trusts in England | Staff and, in some cases, learners used generative AI for education-related work. | In use among the 21 providers Ofsted interviewed; exploratory, purposive interviews, not a representative national estimate. Ofsted, 2025. |
| 2 | Lesson and resource preparation in England | Teachers used AI to help draft lesson plans, adapt texts and prepare teaching resources. | Provider-reported workflow; teachers remain responsible for checking accuracy, curriculum fit and suitability. Ofsted, 2025. |
| 3 | Quizzes and revision in England | Staff generated low-stakes quizzes and revision materials from existing teaching resources. | Provider-reported workflow; the report does not establish that generating quizzes improves attainment. Ofsted, 2025. |
| 4 | Administrative writing in England | Staff used AI to draft or proofread letters, reports and policies, and to summarize documents. | Leaders described time savings as a perceived benefit; human review was still needed. Ofsted, 2025. |
| 5 | Pupil-facing chatbots and tutoring in England | Some providers used learner-facing chatbot or tutoring functions, often modeled by teachers. | Less common than staff-facing use in Ofsted’s interviews; reported use is not an independent measure of learning impact. Ofsted, 2025. |
| 6 | Feedback and assessment support in England | AI assisted with essay feedback, and learners used it to review submitted assignments. | Providers were cautious about assessment and raised accuracy concerns; this was not described as a replacement for qualified teacher assessment. Ofsted, 2025. |
| 7 | Eligiendo mi Camino (“Choosing My Path”) in Lima, Peru | An AI math tutor is combined with career guidance for fifth-year secondary students. | The World Bank Group reported about 4,500 students reached across 85 public schools since March 2026. That reach figure does not establish causal learning gains. |
| 8 | AI training for teachers in Lima, Peru | Practice-oriented training helps teachers use AI and improve their prompting and critical evaluation of outputs. | The World Bank Group described a randomized trial across 390 schools involving 1,270 participating teachers; it reported increased active AI use and improved prompting and evaluation. Those are adoption and teacher-practice findings, not student attainment results. |
| 9 | AI-supported classroom observation in Peru | AI-based observation scores pedagogical and instructional quality, with the stated aim of scaling coaching where expert support is scarce. | The World Bank Group reported results comparable to trained human observers. The account does not establish that AI should replace human observers. |
| 10 | Inq-ITS virtual science labs in the United States | Browser-based inquiry labs for grades 4–10 assess students’ actions and written work, give real-time feedback and alert teachers when learners struggle. | The Institute of Education Sciences summarizes studies including randomized trials, agreement with human coders and longer-term follow-up. These findings concern this tool and its study settings. |
| 11 | Jill Watson at Georgia Tech and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College | The AI teaching assistant was deployed in Georgia Tech’s online computer science program and in an English course at Wiregrass. | Georgia Tech reported more than 600 students in the OMSCS deployment and a controlled comparison with course-grade differences. The report is from the university, which developed the system, and describes a course-specific comparison. |
What do these examples show about how schools use AI?
The cases fall into distinct jobs rather than one general category called “AI in education.” Staff-facing tools help prepare or process material; learner-facing tools offer practice, guidance or feedback; and observation systems support educators’ view of classroom instruction. A tool’s role matters: evidence about a teacher-training program cannot establish the effect of a student tutor, and usage figures cannot be compared directly with test scores or observer agreement.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The English examples also show why adoption is not the same as transformation. The Ofsted report describes practical, bounded uses alongside more cautious experimentation with tutoring and assessment. One multi-academy trust leader captured a curriculum-fit concern: “The OpenAI-type chatbots – ChatGPT, Gemini – do not know your curriculum. They do not know where your pupils are. They do not know what the misconceptions are typically for those topics.” This was the leader’s warning about general-purpose chatbots, not a finding that every configured education system lacks curriculum context.

Does AI in education improve learning?
The available evidence in these accounts does not support a single yes-or-no verdict across AI education tools. The studies use different measures, populations and designs, and no comparable effect size is established across these cases.
Reach and adoption are not learning outcomes
The Peru tutor’s reported reach measures participation, while the Peru teacher-training trial reports changes in teachers’ AI use and practice. Neither figure, by itself, shows that students learned more because of AI. Likewise, a school reporting time saved on routine writing does not establish a change in student attainment.

Some evaluations are more rigorous, but remain specific
The IES summary of Inq-ITS includes randomized trials and other study designs, while Georgia Tech reports a controlled comparison and grade differences for Jill Watson in particular courses. These are more informative than adoption counts alone, but the results should be understood within the tool, course and study conditions described by those sources—not generalized to all tutors or AI assistants.
Ofsted’s 2025 report says providers often relied on user feedback and usage monitoring rather than measures that isolate AI’s contribution to pupil outcomes, and notes little reliable evidence of actual impact on education outcomes. Stanford’s SCALE Initiative reported in 2026 that its review of more than 800 K–12 AI papers identified 20 high-quality causal studies. That is a finding about the reviewed literature, not a census of every AI-in-education study.

What risks and safeguards should schools consider?
Ofsted identifies privacy and safeguarding concerns involving data collection, potential bias, overreliance that could weaken writing or higher-order skills, and difficulties explaining automated assessment decisions. It also warns that AI markers may struggle with nuance, creativity and exceptional work. These are risks to assess, not inevitable outcomes for every system.
- Keep a qualified person accountable. Teachers should review generated content for accuracy, age suitability and alignment with what the class is learning; assessment decisions need appropriate teacher oversight.
- Check the data and safeguarding arrangements. Schools should understand what information a system collects and how learner use is supervised.
- Match tools to the curriculum and students’ needs. A plausible answer may still be wrong for the topic, sequence or misconception being taught.
- Evaluate the right outcome. Track the intended result—such as staff workload, student practice or learning—not merely logins or positive feedback. Use a comparison or other suitable design when making claims about impact.
- Train staff to question outputs. The Peru teacher-training account points to prompting and critical evaluation as practical skills, rather than treating AI output as authoritative.
What AI education programs are planned, rather than already deployed?
Two announced initiatives illustrate why planned pilots should not be counted as completed deployments. Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Science and Education announced a collaboration to build an adaptive tutor within its Digital School network, beginning with a limited pilot and teacher oversight; the announcement describes a planned rollout, not demonstrated reach or outcomes. In the United Kingdom, the 2026 AI Tutoring Tools Pioneers Programme describes co-design and school testing, with successful tools intended for national availability from 2027. Those are future intentions, not evidence of current national availability.
