Use topical videos to respond to timely interest and evergreen videos to answer questions viewers keep asking. A mix gives your channel room to cover what matters now while building a useful back catalog—but there is no evidence-based universal ratio. Choose a sustainable balance by looking at your audience, your goals, and how much time you can give each idea.
What makes a video topical or evergreen?
The distinction is about the viewer’s need and how long it is likely to matter, not a guarantee of how many views a video will get.

Examples
A video explaining what a newly released device changes is topical. A carefully maintained tutorial on setting up a device feature is more evergreen. The same subject can support both: a release-day overview can address what is new, while a separate tutorial answers a lasting setup question.

Topical videos give you a reason to join a current conversation
When a development matters to your audience, a timely video can offer context, explain what changed, or answer an immediate question. The opportunity is tied more closely to current attention, so speed alone is not enough: publish only when you can add something accurate and useful.

Evergreen videos can keep serving recurring needs
A durable how-to or explainer can remain useful after its publication date because viewers continue to encounter the same problem. That does not make it maintenance-free: revise it when a product interface, rule, or other important fact changes.
Some video views do arrive well after publication, but the available figures describe specific groups, not a typical result every creator should expect. In a U.S. Q1 2026 playbook, Agentio reported that approximately 40% of sponsored-video views and 30% of clicks in its study happened more than 30 days after publication, as described by Think with Google. Separately, a January 2026 Think with Google article said that over 60% of organic watch time for the top 1,000 brand channels came from videos published more than 30 days earlier. Those measures cover different populations and should not be combined or treated as a forecast for an individual channel.
How should you choose between a timely idea and a durable one?
- Check audience relevance. Is this event or question meaningful to the people your channel serves, or merely prominent elsewhere?
- Estimate the life of the need. Will viewers still ask this after the current conversation passes? If yes, an evergreen answer may be worthwhile; if the question is time-bound, a topical treatment may fit better.
- Decide whether you can cover it responsibly. For a topical video, can you verify what happened and explain its significance? For an evergreen video, can you make the guidance accurate and maintain it as needed?
- Account for production capacity. A fast turnaround can be demanding, while a durable guide may need more planning or later updates. Do not let either format push you into publishing work that falls below your channel’s quality standard.
- Ask what success means for this video. A timely explainer might serve an immediate audience question; a reference tutorial might be intended to remain useful. Evaluate each against its purpose rather than assuming one format should outperform the other.
How can you use YouTube Analytics to plan?
In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and select the Audience tab. Use its reports to understand new, casual, and regular viewers, the formats they watch on YouTube, and other content they consume. YouTube defines monthly audience as unique viewers in the preceding 28 days, so treat it as a rolling active-audience signal—not a complete measure of a video’s value. Use those observations to form ideas, then compare the results with your own goals and capacity. Look at the performance of topical and evergreen videos in context: their purpose, subject, and intended audience may differ. The reports can inform planning, but they do not establish a universal publishing formula or guarantee that a particular type of video will be recommended.

No universal topical-to-evergreen percentage is established by the available guidance. A fixed rule such as “70/30” would imply a level of evidence that is not there. Instead, maintain a sustainable base of useful answers and leave room for timely ideas when they genuinely fit your audience. Adjust that mix as your goals, audience signals, and available production time change.

Publishing at a particular hour is not a requirement for long-term performance. YouTube says it has not observed evidence that publish time affects long-term viewership; audience-active times may matter for immediate engagement around a Premiere or live stream. Its recommendation guidance says the system aims to deliver relevant content whenever viewers visit, regardless of upload time, and advises creators to prioritize consistent quality over a high upload frequency.
