Can Wi-Fi Calling Receive Incoming Calls? What to Check

Wi-Fi Calling can receive incoming calls when your carrier and device support it, the feature is enabled, and Wi-Fi works. Setup, fallback and charges vary.

Yes. Wi-Fi Calling can receive ordinary calls over Wi-Fi when your carrier supports it, the feature is enabled for your phone line, and the phone has a working Wi-Fi connection. Availability, call routing and charges depend on your carrier, device, plan and location.

How incoming Wi-Fi calls reach your phone

Carrier Wi-Fi Calling lets a supported phone line make and receive ordinary voice calls using a Wi-Fi connection. Your number and calling service remain tied to the carrier; the Wi-Fi connection provides an alternate route when cellular coverage is weak or unavailable. Apple describes the feature as a way to make or receive calls in places with little or no cellular coverage (Apple Support: Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling).

It is not enough for the phone to be connected to any Wi-Fi network: the carrier must support Wi-Fi Calling for your device and line, and the feature must be on. Google notes that not all carriers support Wi-Fi calls (Google Phone app Help: Make calls over Wi-Fi).

Turn on Wi-Fi Calling and confirm it is active

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings, tap Cellular, and select the relevant line if you use multiple SIMs.
  2. Tap Wi-Fi Calling and turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone. Your carrier may ask you to enter or confirm an emergency-services address.
  3. When the feature is available, check Control Centre for “Wi-Fi” beside your carrier name. Apple’s menu labels or availability may vary by carrier and software version (Apple’s setup instructions).

On Android

  1. Open your phone’s Settings and look under the carrier SIM or mobile network settings for Wi-Fi Calling. The exact path and label vary by phone and carrier.
  2. Enable the feature and follow any carrier prompts, including an emergency-address request if shown.
  3. Check the phone’s status indicator or call screen for a Wi-Fi Calling or internet-call indication. If the setting is missing, the carrier may not support it for your setup; Google recommends checking with the carrier (Google’s guidance).

After activation, you generally place and receive calls through the ordinary Phone app. For more reliable incoming calls, keep Wi-Fi on and connected; AT&T recommends enabling the device option that keeps Wi-Fi on during sleep, where available, to help avoid missed calls (AT&T Wi-Fi Calling support). This setting can help, but it cannot guarantee reachability on every device or network.

What happens when Wi-Fi or cellular service changes?

A Wi-Fi call may continue over cellular if Wi-Fi fails and cellular service is available, but this depends on the phone and carrier. Apple says an iPhone call can switch to the carrier’s cellular network using VoLTE when Wi-Fi is lost, if VoLTE is available and enabled (iPhone User Guide: Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling). Google Fi likewise describes switching between Wi-Fi and mobile service as conditions change; that is an example of that service’s behavior, not a guarantee for every carrier (Google Fi: Make calls over Wi-Fi).

If the phone is in Airplane mode with Wi-Fi re-enabled, Wi-Fi Calling may work while the Wi-Fi connection is available. If Wi-Fi drops, the call can end when cellular service remains disabled. Motorola also notes that some carriers require Wi-Fi Calling to be enabled before leaving the home country, and that some countries or carriers restrict calls (Motorola Support: Wi-Fi Calling).

Why you might not receive calls

  • Your carrier or plan does not support it. Confirm that Wi-Fi Calling is available for your specific line and device.
  • The feature is off or not fully registered. Recheck the line’s settings and complete any carrier setup prompts.
  • The Wi-Fi connection is unavailable or incompatible. Apple says not all Wi-Fi networks work with Wi-Fi Calling. Try another network if possible.
  • Wi-Fi disconnects while the phone sleeps. If your phone offers a setting to keep Wi-Fi active during sleep, enabling it may help.
  • Setup or software is preventing service. Apple recommends checking provider support and software, restarting the device, trying another Wi-Fi network, and toggling Wi-Fi Calling. Contact the carrier if the problem continues (Apple troubleshooting guidance).

Will receiving calls cost money, especially abroad?

There is no universal rule that Wi-Fi calls are free. Google says charges may apply and advises checking with your carrier. Your plan, the caller or destination, your location, and whether the call stays on Wi-Fi can affect billing (Google’s billing guidance).

T-Mobile’s U.S. support page illustrates how terms can differ: in its unlimited-plan scenario, incoming calls have no fee; other plans may count calls against plan limits, and international calls have separate terms based on location and destination. Those are T-Mobile-specific conditions, not a rule for other carriers or plans (T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling terms).

Before traveling, check your carrier’s current country availability, whether activation must happen before departure, how incoming and outgoing calls are billed, and what happens if Wi-Fi drops. A call that falls back to cellular abroad may incur roaming charges, so do not assume that beginning a call on Wi-Fi means it will remain on Wi-Fi (T-Mobile’s warning about Wi-Fi loss abroad).

Emergency calls are different

Wi-Fi Calling does not guarantee that an emergency call will connect or that responders will get a precise location. Apple says iPhone emergency calls use cellular service when available; if cellular is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, an emergency call may use Wi-Fi. Location information may assist responders, and some carriers may rely on the registered address. Keep that address accurate if your carrier requests it during setup (Apple Wi-Fi Calling and emergency-call information).
