Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA mapped drive missing from File Explorer can mean several different things: it may not be mapped at all, the computer hosting the share may be unavailable, or the mapping may exist but fail when opened. First check whether it is absent from This PC, absent only from Network browsing, or listed but disconnected; then follow the matching steps below.
Identify where the drive is missing
| What you see | What to check first |
|---|---|
| No drive entry in This PC | Whether the mapping exists and whether it needs to be created again. |
| A device or shared folder is missing from Network | Network discovery and whether the device is on the local network. |
| The mapped drive is listed but shows as disconnected or fails to open | Whether the host is online, the network is available, the path is correct, and your account has permission. |
These symptoms are not interchangeable. Turning on Network discovery helps Windows show devices in Network browsing; it does not validate a mapped drive’s path or grant access to a share.

Check the network, host, and access
- Confirm the PC is connected to the network that contains the shared computer or storage.
- Check that the host is turned on and reachable. Microsoft lists an offline target computer as one possible reason a connection fails.
- Verify the share path and your permissions with the person who manages the shared folder. A valid network connection does not guarantee that the path is correct or that your account is authorized.
Microsoft’s Windows file-sharing guidance recommends checking host availability and whether you have permission to access the shared location.

Enable Network discovery if your goal is to find devices that share files on the local network. In File Explorer, open Network and follow Windows’ prompt to turn discovery on. This is a device-browsing setting, not a repair for every mapped-drive issue: a drive can still be missing or inaccessible because of its mapping, share path, host, or permissions.

Map the drive again in Windows 10 or 11
If the drive is absent from This PC, recreate its mapping using File Explorer. Microsoft’s current instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Choose Map network drive. In Windows 11, the command may be under More; Microsoft also says you can right-click This PC in the folder pane to find it.
- Choose an available drive letter and enter or browse to the shared folder’s network path.
- If you want the drive to reconnect when you sign in, select Reconnect at sign-in.
- Select Finish.
If the mapping fails, recheck the path, host availability, and access rights rather than assuming that the discovery setting is the cause.

If it disappears or disconnects after sleep
After a PC wakes, a network connection or session may take time to reconnect. If the drive appears disconnected only after sleep or resume, first allow the network to reconnect and note whether the problem repeats. The evidence does not establish a single Windows 10 or 11 sleep-related defect behind missing mapped drives, so identify the Windows version and exact symptom before trying version-specific fixes.
Microsoft documented historical cases involving Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. One describes a server-side SMB session being removed after standby or resume, leaving a mapped drive temporarily unavailable. Another describes a delay of more than two minutes after wake when Offline Files attempted to reconnect before the network was ready. These are limited to the older systems and circumstances described in Microsoft’s articles, not a normal wait-time recommendation for current Windows:

A separate Microsoft support article concerns a Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 Group Policy Preferences issue where a non-persistent mapping could appear disconnected while the client was offline. That isolated legacy behavior is not a reason to change persistence settings broadly on current Windows. Read Microsoft’s description of that specific case.
