Yes—but urlwatch’s documented visual-comparison route is the pyvisualcompare GUI frontend, not a built-in screenshot pixel-diff feature. It lets you select a region of a rendered page and generate a hash of its screen contents for urlwatch to monitor. If you only need to know whether page text or HTML changed, ordinary urlwatch jobs and filters are a different, content-focused option.
What urlwatch compares
Urlwatch retrieves and processes webpage output—or the output of a shell command—then compares it with an earlier version. When it detects a change, its notification can include a unified diff showing what changed. The result depends on the selected job and any filters applied before comparison. See the urlwatch handbook.

- Content monitoring: a regular URL job retrieves what the web server serves. Filters can select or transform content, including selecting HTML with CSS or XPath and converting HTML to text.
- JavaScript-dependent pages: a browser job is available for pages that need JavaScript.
- Visual-region monitoring: pyvisualcompare is the documented option for comparing rendered screen contents. It selects a region and generates a hash for urlwatch to monitor.
These approaches do not answer the same question. A text or HTML change can matter even when a selected region looks the same; a visible change may matter even when the page’s text is unchanged.

- Open the pyvisualcompare frontend described in the urlwatch advanced documentation.
- Use its GUI workflow to select the webpage region you want to monitor.
- Use the generated urlwatch configuration so urlwatch can monitor a hash of that region’s screen contents.
- Run urlwatch on a schedule you choose, and configure its reporting as needed. The schedule is user-selected; the cited documentation does not prescribe an interval.
This is the supported high-level workflow described in the official documentation. It does not establish particular commands, operating-system or browser compatibility, pixel-difference thresholds, image alignment behavior, screenshot retention, or a specific alert format for pyvisualcompare. Check the current project documentation for implementation details before depending on one of those specifics.

Choose visual monitoring or content monitoring
| Need | Approach | What is compared |
|---|---|---|
| Know whether page text or selected HTML changed | Urlwatch URL job with appropriate filters | Retrieved and processed page output |
| Monitor a page that needs JavaScript to render | Urlwatch browser job | Browser-retrieved output, subject to the job and filters |
| Know whether a particular visible area changed | pyvisualcompare frontend with urlwatch | A hash of selected screen contents |
The documentation describes the mechanisms, not a comparative accuracy or false-positive rate. Choose based on the signal you care about: content in the fetched output or appearance in a rendered region.
What the visual-comparison documentation does not promise
The documented hash workflow should not be mistaken for a documented native screenshot-to-screenshot pixel comparison. The cited urlwatch material does not specify pixel tolerances, alignment, stored screenshot history, or compatibility requirements for pyvisualcompare. It also does not establish how small rendering differences are handled. If those details are essential, verify them in current pyvisualcompare and urlwatch documentation rather than assuming a particular diff algorithm or platform support.
