To raise money for charity on a livestream without donations passing through you first, use a fundraising tool that names the beneficiary and routes contributions to it—or use the charity’s own donation system. Before announcing the event, confirm the charity is available, check what donors will see and how funds are handled, then share a clear campaign link. Ordinary tips, subscriptions, Bits, and memberships generally pay the creator; they are not direct charitable donations unless a specific tool routes them that way.
Choose a cause your audience can understand—and verify the beneficiary
Start with an issue that has a credible connection to you or your community. Decide whether you want to support a local, national, or international organization, then search for the named charity in the fundraising service you plan to use. Read the charity’s own description and any campaign requirements before you publish.

Availability is a practical constraint, not a detail to leave until event day. Twitch’s charity tool draws organizations from PayPal Giving Fund’s database, and Twitch says a charity needs a PayPal Giving Fund profile to appear. YouTube Giving has separate nonprofit eligibility conditions. If your preferred charity is not selectable, check its own fundraising system or another legitimate platform rather than silently substituting a different beneficiary.

- YouTube: YouTube says eligible recipients must be US-registered 501(c)(3) public charities, opt into online fundraising, and comply with YouTube policies. Private foundations are not currently supported. Confirm current eligibility and geographic availability in YouTube Giving’s help information.
- Tiltify: The American Red Cross’s guide illustrates how to search for and select the Red Cross as a campaign beneficiary. See its Tiltify instructions for that organization.
There is no established basis in these platform guides for saying one cause will raise more than another. Choose for relevance and a verifiable donation route, not a promised fundraising outcome.

Choose a donation route that makes the money flow clear
The key question is what happens after a viewer clicks. A direct charity fundraising route identifies the beneficiary and collects contributions for it. A tip, subscription, or other payment to you is different: you may later choose to donate some of your payout, but the viewer has paid you, not made a direct donation through the charity tool.
Twitch specifically distinguishes charitable contributions made through its charity routes from Bits, subscriptions, and other monetization. Its help guidance cautions that a creator’s later donation of ordinary viewer payments is not the same as a charitable donation through the tool. It recommends Twitch Charity, another platform that allows direct charity donations, or the charity’s own fundraising system. Explain the route accurately on stream and on the campaign page.
For YouTube Giving, YouTube’s FAQ says Google partners with Network for Good to collect and distribute donations at Google’s request. It says 100% of a contribution goes to the nonprofit and YouTube pays transaction fees; under the FAQ’s description, Network for Good has exclusive legal control over donations once collected. The FAQ says distributions are typically monthly, while amounts under $10 are disbursed annually. Treat these as the arrangement and timing described in YouTube’s current help page, and check that page again before publishing because platform terms can change.

Twitch’s company blog post dated December 7, 2022 stated: “All community donations go to our partner, PayPal Giving Fund, and are granted to your recommended charity in accordance with its policies.” That describes Twitch’s arrangement as stated in that dated post, not a guarantee of unchanged present-day terms. The same post said Twitch did not take a cut of those donations or receive tax incentives; verify current terms rather than relying on a 2022 statement as a current promise. Choose based on the beneficiary, the platform where you stream, the donor experience, and the campaign features your event actually needs. The comparison below reflects official platform or charity documentation, not hands-on testing.

These services are not interchangeable: a tool may support your streaming platform but not the charity you want, or it may offer a donation flow that does not fit your audience. Check the current service and charity terms directly before you announce the fundraiser.

Set up the campaign and make the route easy to verify
- Verify the organization. Find the exact beneficiary in the tool you intend to use, then read its own description and any campaign conditions. If it is missing, look for another legitimate route rather than naming an organization the tool cannot select.
- Review the donor journey. Test what the campaign page says, who receives funds, what confirmation or receipts the donor may get, and whether the route serves viewers in the locations you expect. Do not describe a payment to your creator account as a direct charity contribution.
- Create a clear campaign page. Use a title and description that identify the cause, beneficiary, and event date. Set an initial goal you can explain; a goal is a planning aid, not a forecast or guarantee of proceeds. Streamlabs’ guide and the Red Cross Tiltify instructions describe campaign fields and setup.
- Publish the direct link. Put the campaign or donation link in a visible place viewers can find, such as your stream description or a pinned chat message. Say who receives contributions and which payment route is being used.
- Add overlays or alerts only if useful. Tiltify’s Red Cross guide describes progress and donor overlays and integrations; Streamlabs documents linking a campaign to alerts. Use them to clarify the campaign, not to imply that an alert proves a contribution has reached the charity.
- Keep ordinary monetization separate. During the event, distinguish campaign donations from tips, Bits, subscriptions, memberships, or other creator payments. State plainly whether a separate creator payout will be donated later, and do not imply it has already been routed to the charity.
Plan for platform, region, and payout details
Fundraising rules, eligible charities, viewer-country support, and interface features can change. Confirm them immediately before the campaign goes live, especially if viewers are in several countries or if the beneficiary’s legal status matters. For YouTube Giving, remember the recipient requirement stated in its help FAQ: US-registered 501(c)(3) public charity, opted into online fundraising, and compliant with YouTube policies; private foundations are not currently supported. YouTube’s FAQ also describes monthly disbursement typically and annual disbursement for amounts below $10, so do not promise an immediate payout.
