To create clips with Streamlabs Desktop, set a Replay Buffer duration and hotkey, capture moments while streaming—or start the buffer manually without going live—then edit and export them. Streamlabs now calls Highlighter “Replay”; labels and availability can differ between versions.
Highlighter and Replay: what changed?
Streamlabs’ Replay guide, updated September 22, 2026, says Highlighter is now Replay. The newer Replay tool adds automatic recording and other capture and editing features. Streamlabs’ older Highlighter instructions remain useful for its hotkey-based capture and highlight-reel workflow, but your installed version may use different labels or steps. Streamlabs’ Replay guide describes the current naming.

How to set up Streamlabs Desktop Highlighter
- Open Highlighter. In the older documented interface, choose the Highlighter tab in Streamlabs Desktop’s left navigation.
- Set the replay duration. Choose how much recent gameplay a clip should include. Streamlabs also calls this the clip duration.
- Choose a hotkey. Set a key combination you can press easily during gameplay without interfering with your controls. The older Highlighter workflow uses this hotkey to save a clip.
- Check Replay Buffer setup. Highlighter works with Replay Buffer, which keeps a recent stretch of gameplay available to save. Streamlabs’ recording instructions explain how to configure Replay Buffer and its hotkey: Streamlabs Desktop Recording Functionality.
Because Streamlabs has renamed and updated the feature, use the controls shown in your installed version if they differ from the legacy Highlighter directions.

Capture a moment during a live stream
- Start your stream in Streamlabs Desktop.
- When something worth keeping happens, press the hotkey you configured. The Highlighter workflow saves the recent replay window as a clip.
- Continue playing; press the hotkey again for each moment you want to keep.
Save a replay without going live
You do not have to broadcast to capture a replay with the legacy Replay Buffer workflow. Streamlabs says you can manually start Replay Buffer beside the Go Live button, play or record your session, and save replays with the configured hotkey. This is useful for making gameplay clips locally when you do not want an audience or a live session. See Streamlabs’ recording instructions for its Replay Buffer setup.

Edit clips into a highlight reel
After your stream or capture session, return to Highlighter to work with the saved clips. The older Highlighter editor supports the following adjustments:
- Trim the start or end of a clip by dragging its edges.
- Reorder clips to control the sequence of the reel.
- Choose a transition type and duration between clips.
- Add an intro, outro, or background music.
- Enable or disable clips in the reel, or delete clips you do not want.
Preview the assembled reel before exporting. Watch for abrupt cuts, unwanted downtime, or music that masks game audio, and adjust the clips or transitions as needed. The available controls may vary in Replay or in different Streamlabs Desktop versions. The legacy steps are documented in Streamlabs Desktop Highlighter support.

Export and share your clips
- When the preview is ready, click Export and choose the export settings offered in your version.
- Wait for the export to finish, then locate the downloaded video on your computer.
- Upload or share that file on the platform you use. Streamlabs’ newer Replay guide lists export destinations such as the computer, YouTube, Discord, and phone; do not assume every destination appears in every legacy Highlighter build.

Replay availability and operating-system caveat
Streamlabs’ Replay-specific guide says Replay is currently supported on Windows only. However, a Streamlabs Highlighter product page lists Windows 10+ and macOS 12+ and describes Highlighter as built into Streamlabs Desktop. Those official pages conflict on macOS availability; the available information does not establish whether legacy Highlighter remains available in current macOS Desktop builds. Check the current Streamlabs download page and the feature’s availability in your installed app before relying on it for a Mac workflow. Streamlabs describes Replay as free. Replay Buffer or Replay?
Streamlabs describes Replay Buffer as a way to save a recent window of gameplay with a hotkey, while Replay automatically records and saves clips for later editing. Choose based on whether you prefer to mark a specific moment yourself or have clips captured automatically. Replay Buffer can also be started manually without streaming; a more assembled reel can be edited with trimming, ordering, transitions, and intro or outro elements in Highlighter’s documented workflow. Streamlabs does not publish a performance comparison establishing that one approach is faster or better for system performance.
Troubleshooting Streamlabs clips
- Pressing the hotkey saves nothing: Confirm Replay Buffer is configured and active, and check that the hotkey is set to the key combination you are pressing. If capturing offline, start the buffer manually beside Go Live first.
- The clip is shorter or longer than expected: Review the replay or clip duration setting. The saved replay covers the configured recent window, so set the duration before capturing.
- You cannot find Highlighter: Look for Replay in the current app, since Streamlabs has renamed the feature. The interface in a newer build may not match older Highlighter instructions.
- Replay is unavailable on your computer: Streamlabs’ current Replay guide says Windows only, while its Highlighter product page lists macOS 12+ as well. Verify availability in the current app for your operating system.
- An export destination is missing: Destination options vary by version. Export to the computer if available, then upload the downloaded file yourself.
