The clearest use cases are recovering some power from otherwise-wasted heat and serving small loads. A module’s laboratory rating is not the same as usable, net output from an installed home system.
What a thermoelectric generator needs to make electricity
A TEG is a solid-state device that converts heat flow into electricity. Its output depends on maintaining a temperature difference across the module: one side must stay hot while the other remains cooler. Heat in the abstract is not enough. The source, heat-transfer path, cooling conditions and module all determine whether that gradient can be sustained.

A working installation therefore involves more than a module. Heat exchangers and thermal interfaces transfer heat to and from it; electrical controls manage its output, and an inverter may be needed for AC loads. Pumps or fans used to move heat can consume some of the electricity generated. The U.S. Department of Energy’s industrial scoping study identifies material properties, temperature difference and heat transfer on both sides as performance factors, and warns that pumps can use a significant share of output. Why lab efficiency does not predict home output
A 2020 peer-reviewed field-deployment study summarizes laboratory reports of thermal-to-electrical efficiency as high as 11%, but says practical efficiency in real environments is no more than a few percent. The authors’ point is that a device’s real surroundings and boundary conditions matter: heat-transfer resistance and how the module is coupled to its source and surroundings affect performance. The reported laboratory ceiling should not be treated as expected installed efficiency. Kishore et al., “High-Performance Thermoelectric Generators for Field Deployments” (2020)

The same study reported up to 28% more power and 162% more power per unit mass than the commercial low-grade-waste-heat module used as its comparison. Those are relative results for the study’s device and comparator—not a household output figure or a promise of typical performance.
What building and heating-system projects show
Residential burner-integrated development
The U.S. Department of Energy describes a project led by Gas Technology Institute, with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Sheetak Inc. as partners. Its goal was to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of an integrated, fuel-flexible thermoelectric system for residential and commercial buildings. The listed project term ran from April 15, 2019, through July 31, 2022; the page is dated May 28, 2020. This is evidence of a development target, not proof of a currently available consumer product or a measured whole-home electricity supply. DOE project description
DOE’s page also says that earlier work on self-powered appliances had not produced commercially successful products, citing low energy savings and customized designs that prevented drop-in installation. That points to a practical barrier beyond conversion efficiency: a system must fit the appliance and building, and its benefits must justify its cost and complexity.
Boiler and heater waste-heat recovery
A California Energy Commission project tested an Advanced Thermo-Electric Generator System using PbTe and BiTe modules integrated with an available boiler or heater. Its 2024 publication reports that the high-temperature PbTe modules exceeded 5% efficiency, with a 6.27-year payback, and gives a 4.77-year payback for the low-temperature BiTe module. The page also reports 1.00- and 0.56-year payback figures for combined heat-and-power cases. These are outcomes for the project’s particular equipment and assumptions; they do not establish typical household economics or show that a TEG can run a whole home. Small demonstrations are not household power systems
TEGs can produce useful electricity at small scale. In a demonstration reported by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2020, a device using radiative sky cooling measured 0.025 watts per square meter on a clear night at a Stanford rooftop—enough to power a small LED. The researchers estimated that higher-quality components could raise output to as much as 0.5 watts per square meter. This is a niche demonstration, not a representative home generator or a general estimate for other heat sources. DOE Office of Science, “Generating Light from Darkness”
It helps to distinguish three different claims: producing measurable electricity in a demonstration, offsetting a small auxiliary load, and supplying ordinary household electrical loads over time. The cited work supports the first two kinds of examples and documents residential appliance development; it does not verify the third.

Why a fixed home-watt estimate would be misleading
There is no general home-scale wattage figure established by these sources. To estimate output for a particular installation, you would need more than the module’s nameplate rating. At a minimum, the estimate must account for the heat source, its operating hours, the hot-to-cold temperature difference actually maintained across the module, heat flow, exchanger design, module arrangement and electrical losses. Net output must also subtract the power used by pumps, fans, controls and conversion equipment.

The DOE industrial study illustrates how sensitive performance can be to operating conditions: it reports that a 100°C decrease in temperature differential can cause more than 20% performance loss for a module with a figure of merit near ZT≈2. It also describes historical commercial-system estimates of roughly 3% efficiency and about $30 per watt, with a target of about $5 per watt for competitiveness. Those figures are historical report context, not current consumer prices or a quote for a home installation. DOE industrial TEG scoping study

How to assess a proposed home TEG system
Before treating a product or design as a home-power solution, ask for system-level evidence rather than a module-only maximum:
- What heat source does it use, at what temperature, and for how many hours?
- What temperature difference is maintained across the module under actual operating conditions?
- Is the stated output measured at the module, or is it net power after heat-moving equipment, controls and electrical conversion?
- Is the output continuous, intermittent or a laboratory maximum?
- What are the installed-cost and payback assumptions, and do they match the intended use?
- Is the stated goal to power a sensor or light, offset a heating appliance’s auxiliary load, or supply ordinary household electricity?
A thermoelectric generator module can be a legitimate component for experiments or specialized heat recovery, but it is not a home-power system by itself. The evidence cited here does not identify one recommended kit or compatible parts list; the needed thermal and electrical components depend on the specific source, load and design.
