CCB’s Hong Kong H-shares trade as 939 (also shown as 00939), while its Shanghai A-shares trade as 601939. Hong Kong’s closing auction runs after continuous trading ends at 4:00 p.m.; a quote during that interval is not necessarily the final close or evidence of an overnight move.
Which CCB share code are you looking at?
CCB has two separate ordinary-share listings: H-shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX), code 939, and A-shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE), code 601939. CCB’s 2025 half-year report uses 00939 for the Hong Kong line and 601939 for Shanghai. CCB’s half-year report identifies the codes; its investor-relations site is the official starting point for company materials.

A Hong Kong quote and a Shanghai quote are not interchangeable readings of one instrument. They belong to different listings and currencies. When comparing them, record the listing code and venue, currency, timestamp and local session, and whether each number is a continuous-session trade, an auction indication, or a final closing price. The values should also be contemporaneous; a price from one market’s close compared with a later or earlier value from the other market can create a misleading impression of divergence.
What “after-hours” can mean for CCB’s Hong Kong shares
For a normal full trading day, HKEX’s Hong Kong-time schedule includes pre-opening from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m.; continuous trading from 9:30 a.m. to noon; an extended morning session from noon to 1:00 p.m.; and afternoon continuous trading from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The closing auction follows, ending at a random time between 4:08 and 4:10 p.m. Half-days and holiday schedules differ, so confirm the calendar for the date in question. See HKEX’s trading mechanism and session schedule.

The closing auction is part of the exchange’s market schedule, not by itself proof that a later overnight trading session took place. HKEX describes the Closing Auction Session (CAS) as a way to execute orders at securities’ closing prices. The exchange also describes the normal closing price as the median of five nominal prices in the last minute of continuous trading. The auction has reference-price fixing, order-input, no-cancellation, and random-closing stages. An indication shown during the auction should therefore be distinguished from the final matched close and from any later value displayed by a data provider. HKEX’s explanation is in its Securities Market FAQ.
For CCB’s Shanghai A-shares, the cited Stock Connect schedule lists an opening call auction from 9:15 to 9:25 a.m., continuous trading from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 to 2:57 p.m., followed by a closing call auction from 2:57 to 3:00 p.m. Shanghai time. Exchange rules can change sessions, so verify the relevant date’s timetable. The schedule appears in HKEX’s Stock Connect trading-hours information and its China Connect rules.
Rank #2
Because the two venues close at different local times and use distinct schedules, a screen’s apparent “after-hours” difference could reflect timing, a different listing, or the provider’s timestamp convention. That possibility is a way to investigate a quote, not a claim that a particular CCB trade occurred after either exchange closed. The official schedule cited here establishes Hong Kong’s closing auction; it does not establish a separate CCB extended-hours session.
How to check a reported price move
- Identify the instrument. Establish whether the quote is for HKEX 939/00939 or SSE 601939.
- Capture the quote details. Record the provider, timestamp and time zone, currency, and whether the value is a last trade, indicative auction price, or closing price. Do not infer missing fields.
- Check the market phase. Compare that timestamp with the exchange’s schedule for the exact date. Determine whether the market was in continuous trading, a closing auction, or closed.
- Use a like-for-like comparison. Compare against the prior close for the same listing and price basis. If comparing listings, make the currencies and timestamps explicit rather than comparing nominal prices directly.
- Look for a documented company event. Check CCB’s official investor-relations channels for announcements, results, presentations, and webcasts before linking a move to news or fundamentals.
- Verify provider-specific displays. If a quote appears after the relevant exchange session, identify the data provider and its convention. A displayed post-close value alone does not establish that an exchange trade occurred.
A price change alone does not establish its cause. Attribute a move to company news only when the timing and a relevant disclosure support that explanation. Without that evidence, describe the observed price and its quote basis without assigning a cause.

CCB’s investor-relations profile describes businesses spanning corporate finance, personal finance, treasury, and asset management, as well as subsidiaries in areas such as fund management, financial leasing, trust, insurance, futures, pensions, and investment banking. The same profile reports the following scale figures at the end of 2025:
| Measure | Reported figure | As of |
|---|---|---|
| Personal customers | 785 million | End of 2025 |
| Corporate customers | 12.73 million | End of 2025 |
| Staff members | 378,344 | End of 2025 |
| Operating entities | 14,614 | End of 2025 |
| Market capitalization | Approximately US$265,545 million | End of 2025 |
These are dated figures reported by CCB, not a live share price or current market capitalization. They describe the scale of the business but do not explain a particular daily price move. For a view of fundamentals, use dated results and relevant disclosures rather than treating company size as a cause.
What is not established by an “after-hours” label
No timestamped quote, date-specific percentage change, current post-close CCB trade, or cause for a current move is established here. The meaning of an “after-hours” display depends on the provider and its quote convention; verify it against the provider’s definition and the relevant exchange record. Do not add a current price or characterize a specific move without a timestamped quote for the correct code, venue, currency, and session.
