Change the exposed password now—but do it through the legitimate service’s app or website, using a saved bookmark or an address you type yourself. Don’t follow links from the suspicious site or incident messages. Use a new password that you don’t use anywhere else. Then change any reused versions, sign out other sessions, enable two-factor authentication, and check your account’s recovery details and recent activity.
1. Change the exposed password through the real service
Assume the password you entered is compromised. Open the service using its official app, a saved bookmark, or an address you enter yourself. A page that looks familiar may still be controlled by someone else, so don’t use a reset link on the suspect website or in an unsolicited message.

Set a new, unique password—one you have not used on any other account. The FTC warns that criminals may try stolen username-and-password combinations on other services, and Google advises changing compromised passwords promptly. 2. Change every other account that used the same password
If you reused that password, replace it on every account where it appears. Prioritize your email account, financial services, shopping accounts with stored payment details, and any account that can be used to reset another account. An attacker who gets into your email may be able to use password-reset messages to reach other services. Use each service’s official app or site and give every account its own password. 3. End sessions you don’t recognize and enable two-factor authentication
Changing a password does not necessarily sign out every device or session. In the service’s security settings, use its option to sign out of other devices or sessions, and review the device list for anything unfamiliar.
Then enable two-factor authentication (also called multifactor authentication) if the service offers it. It adds a second check, helping protect the account even if someone knows the password. Available options vary by service; the FTC describes text-message codes, authenticator-app codes, and physical security keys. It calls security keys the strongest method among those it discusses because they confirm association with the account using encryption rather than credentials a hacker can steal. A key is an optional second factor, not a replacement for changing the exposed password. FTC guidance on two-factor authentication; CISA guidance on phishing-resistant MFA.

If the exposed account is email, also inspect forwarding rules and filters you didn’t create, as well as sent and deleted folders for messages you don’t recognize.
