A lit “BUGGED” LED is a warning that the circuit detected unexpected electronics—not proof that a cable is malicious, nor a guarantee that a quiet or dormant implant will be found. Its designer’s safety rationale is that the detector limits power available to the device under test, but that is not a universal guarantee for every unknown USB device.
What the CuVoodoo detector checks
CuVoodoo describes its device as identifying “USB type-A cables (or devices) with integrated circuits.” That makes it a screening tool for unexpected electronics in a cable or connected USB device, rather than a general-purpose cable tester or a forensic analyzer. The concern includes O.MG Cables, which can conceal a Wi-Fi microcontroller and support remote command execution; iFixit describes the product family as a covert data-collection and exfiltration device with Wi-Fi hotspot capability.

The detector is designed to notice electrical activity: it flags a suspect item when its current draw exceeds the circuit’s threshold. It does not identify a component or determine its purpose. Ordinary electronics in an adapter or device may also draw current, so an alert requires interpretation in context.

Hackster’s 2022 report describes a CR1220 coin cell, a reset button, and a “SIMULATE” button for checking the detector and battery. Connect the suspect cable to the detector and watch the indicator:

- BUGGED lights: The circuit observed current draw above its threshold. Treat the cable or device as suspect and do not rely on it for a sensitive connection.
- BUGGED stays off: The detector did not observe current above that threshold during the test. This is not proof that the item is safe; the test does not establish coverage for every dormant or low-draw implant.
- SIMULATE: Use the built-in check to verify the detector responds, as described in Hackster’s report.
CuVoodoo’s published project entry dates to July 9, 2022. Hackster reported that the detector’s threshold is 1.6 mA. Above that level, the circuit’s NOR-gate SR latch turns on the BUGGED LED. The report gives an LED-on draw of 3 mA and an LED-off draw of 64 nA. Kévin, the creator, estimated 62 years of idle battery life for a typical 35 mAh CR1220; that is his estimate, not a practical guarantee of service life under real storage and use conditions.
Is it safe to connect an unknown cable?
The design’s safety argument is based on limiting current: Hackster says the detector places a 1 kΩ resistor inline and uses a limited 3.3 V supply, restricting the maximum draw at the USB plug to 3.3 mA. Kévin’s stated rationale is that this is generally too little to power an integrated circuit properly, particularly a radio interface. This describes the designer’s intended protection, not an independent guarantee that every unknown device or cable is harmless in every circumstance.

Use it as a cautious screening step, not as authorization to connect a suspicious cable to a computer, phone, or valuable device. If the LED lights—or if the cable’s origin is uncertain and the stakes are high—avoid using it for data or charging sensitive equipment.
CuVoodoo and dedicated O.MG detectors compared
These products use different approaches, so a negative result from one should not be treated as equivalent to a negative result from another. Hak5 and Lab401 describe their O.MG detectors as using side-channel power analysis; those performance statements are product claims, not independent comparative test results.

A separate CuVoodoo micro-USB tester answers a different question: whether a USB 2.0 micro-B cable supports data transfer or charging only. Likewise, a generic “USB cable tester” may check wiring or charging behavior without using CuVoodoo’s threshold or detecting concealed electronics. Do not assume those tools detect dormant implants.

A positive CuVoodoo result means the test circuit saw enough current draw to trigger its indicator. It does not reveal which chip is present, whether the electronics are malicious, or what the device can do. A negative result only means the circuit did not trigger under the conditions of that test; the available reporting does not establish a measured false-positive or false-negative rate, or prove that dormant implants will be detected.

For a basic decision, treat the detector as a quick screening aid: a warning is a reason to stop and investigate, while no warning is not a clean bill of health. When you need a tool specifically marketed for O.MG cable detection or charging without data transfer, compare the dedicated detectors’ stated features and verify current compatibility and availability with the seller.
