Possibly—but Webb has not established that Proxima b is habitable. The planet orbits within Proxima Centauri’s habitable zone, where liquid water could be possible under suitable conditions. That orbital location does not show that Proxima b has water, an atmosphere, a stable climate, or life. Webb could help researchers test some of those conditions by measuring the planet’s infrared emission and how heat moves across it.
What Webb could actually tell us
Webb’s most relevant route is indirect: observe changes in the combined star-and-planet infrared signal over Proxima b’s orbit, then use those changes to constrain the planet’s temperature pattern and atmosphere. A NASA-hosted study also identifies observations at wavelengths longer than 10 microns as a potential way to investigate heat transport and atmospheric molecules, while noting that Proxima b could have followed several different evolutionary paths. Thermal phase curves: tracking heat around the orbit
A 2016 theoretical study by Laura Kreidberg and Abraham Loeb modeled thermal phase-curve observations between 5 and 12 microns. A phase curve tracks how the system’s infrared brightness changes as the planet orbits; differences can reveal whether heat is concentrated on the dayside or transported to the nightside. Under the study’s model and photon-limited precision assumptions, the signal could distinguish a bare-rock scenario from a modeled atmosphere redistributing 35% of heat to the nightside. The authors also considered a possible ozone feature near 9.8 microns in an Earth-like-atmosphere scenario, which would require longer integration. These are proposed observing prospects, not reported Webb measurements of Proxima b. Kreidberg and Loeb, “Prospects for Characterizing the Atmosphere of Proxima Centauri b”

What an atmospheric signal would—and would not—mean
A substantial atmosphere could move heat and alter the planet’s infrared spectrum; a bare surface or very tenuous atmosphere would produce a different pattern. Even if Webb helped identify atmospheric gases, their presence alone would not demonstrate surface water or a benign climate. The result would be a constraint on possible environments, not a simple habitable-or-uninhabitable verdict.

Webb is designed for infrared astronomy, and NASA describes its ability to characterize atmospheres around some small planets orbiting cool stars. But NASA cautions that biosignature investigations can take potentially hundreds of hours for a single planet and still remain inconclusive. NASA Science: Webb FAQs
Why the habitable-zone label is not a habitability finding
The habitable zone is an orbital range where liquid water could exist on a planet’s surface if other conditions are right. It does not establish that a planet has water or an atmosphere, nor that its surface conditions allow water to persist. NASA’s account of Proxima b puts the distinction plainly: “Just because Proxima b’s orbit is in the habitable zone, which is the distance from its host star where water could pool on a planet’s surface, doesn’t mean it’s habitable.” NASA, “An Earth-like Atmosphere May Not Survive Proxima b’s Orbit”
For Proxima b, key unknowns include its initial water inventory, atmospheric composition, magnetic properties, climate and history. These variables matter because they affect how much atmosphere and water the planet could retain while exposed to its star.

Why scientists disagree about atmospheric loss
Proxima Centauri is an active, low-mass star. Its high-energy radiation poses a potential challenge to atmospheric retention, but different models examine different quantities and conditions. Their results should not be collapsed into either “the atmosphere is gone” or “the planet is habitable.”
A model that emphasizes early water loss
A study record hosted by NASA reports that Proxima b receives, today, an estimated 30 times Earth’s extreme-ultraviolet radiation and 250 times Earth’s X-rays. The authors’ model estimated that the planet may have lost less than an Earth-ocean’s worth of hydrogen before reaching the habitable zone, 100–200 million years after formation. They identify the planet’s initial water budget as a major uncertainty, so the modeled early loss does not establish how much water Proxima b has now. A separate model using Earth’s atmosphere as a proxy
A different calculation placed an Earth-like atmosphere at Proxima b’s orbit as a proxy. NASA’s 2017 account says the modeled escape rate could be up to 10,000 times Earth’s under the described conditions. In the model’s most extreme thermosphere and magnetic-field case, an amount equal to Earth’s atmosphere could escape in 100 million years; in its lower-temperature, closed-field case, the comparable loss takes 2 billion years. These are conditional model outputs—not measurements of Proxima b’s atmosphere or predictions of its actual depletion time. The account notes that the calculation used average stellar activity and did not include certain variations and magnetic disturbances. The studies address different assumptions and questions: one estimates early hydrogen loss in the context of a planet’s volatile history, while the other tests atmospheric escape using an Earth-atmosphere proxy and selected stellar and magnetic conditions. Neither removes the central uncertainty about Proxima b’s actual starting inventory and present environment.

A candidate biosignature would be a reason to investigate, not a life detection. NASA’s Webb Mission Team wrote in 2025: “Finding life elsewhere in the universe also is a process, and detection of a single potential biosignature would not constitute discovery of life.” NASA calls for follow-up observations, multiple converging lines of evidence, independent observations where possible, and atmospheric modeling that tests nonbiological explanations. NASA Webb Mission Team, “How NASA’s Webb Telescope Supports Our Search for Life Beyond Earth”
The observing time required depends on the planet and the conditions. For a different world, LHS 1140 b, NASA described theoretical estimates of approximately 10–50 transits, or 40–200 observing hours, for an attempt to detect some potential biosignature gases in a best-case clear, cloud-free atmosphere. Clouds, stellar variability and water vapor in star spots can complicate such work. That estimate is specific to LHS 1140 b and should not be applied to Proxima b. Has Webb observed Proxima b?
The sources establishing Webb’s general capabilities and the proposed Proxima b phase-curve method do not establish a specific Webb observation, selection or result for this planet. The Space Telescope Science Institute’s Cycle 6 call for proposals is not, by itself, evidence that Proxima b has been observed or selected. Space Telescope Science Institute, “JWST Call for Proposals for Cycle 6”
The careful conclusion is therefore that Webb could help constrain Proxima b’s atmosphere and heat transport, if suitable observations are made and yield interpretable data. Whether the planet is truly habitable remains an open question that depends on evidence about its atmosphere, water, climate and history—not its orbit alone.
