A text can exceed the capacity of one SMS segment. Phones and carriers may split a long SMS into linked parts that appear as one message, but they can also display the parts separately or handle them differently. The familiar 160-character limit applies only to a single segment using GSM-7 encoding; Unicode characters can lower that capacity, and MMS limits depend on the carrier and messaging app.
What is the SMS character limit?
An SMS segment carries up to 140 bytes, so its character capacity depends on how the text is encoded. With GSM-7, which covers the standard GSM character set, one segment holds up to 160 characters. With UCS-2, used when a message includes characters outside GSM-7, one segment holds up to 70 characters. These are single-segment capacities, not a universal maximum for an entire message. AWS End User Messaging SMS and the IETF’s RFC 5724 document these limits.

When a long SMS is split into linked segments, each part needs a header that lets the receiving phone reassemble the message. That leaves space for 153 GSM-7 characters or 67 UCS-2 characters in each segment. The recipient may see one joined message, separate parts, or other behavior depending on the app, carrier, and device. A messaging service can also set its own overall maximum; for example, AWS documents a service-specific maximum of 1,530 GSM characters or 630 non-GSM characters. Those figures are not universal phone or carrier limits.

The number of visible characters is not always the number of encoded units. Some characters in the GSM-7 extension set—including ^, {, }, , [, ], ~, |, and €—use two septets rather than one. A character outside GSM-7 can make the message use UCS-2, whose segment capacity is lower. Emoji often trigger Unicode encoding, though handling can vary by device and service.

AWS illustrates the effect with a 130-character sentence: one curly closing apostrophe makes it two parts in its example, while replacing that mark with a standard apostrophe lets it fit in one. AWS explains the example and character-set rules. Accents and non-Latin characters can also affect encoding. As a result, an editor’s character counter may not predict the final number of SMS segments.
Why did a long text turn into MMS?
Some messaging apps route long text or media through MMS instead of sending it as one or more SMS segments. There is no single MMS message-size or text-character limit that applies to every carrier and device. Apple documents carrier-provided configuration values for the maximum MMS message size, maximum image size, and the SMS size above which an app should use MMS; the actual settings are implementation-specific. Apple’s MMS configuration documentation describes these values.

MMS can carry media, but switching to it does not guarantee that a long text will send. Support, size limits, and routing behavior depend on the carrier and app, and the recipient’s device and service can affect delivery. Check your carrier’s current MMS support and your messaging app’s settings if a message changes to MMS or fails.

How to troubleshoot a text that is too long
- Check the characters: Look for emoji, curly quotes, accents, non-Latin text, and GSM-7 extension characters if your phone says the message will be split or counts several texts.
- Use plain punctuation when it helps: If keeping the text within one GSM-7 segment matters, replace typographic quotes with ordinary apostrophes and review other characters that may change encoding.
- Shorten or split important messages: If the recipient’s carrier or device is unknown, send a shorter message or divide it yourself rather than relying on multipart delivery behavior.
- Check MMS settings and support: If the app switches to MMS or sending fails, confirm that MMS is enabled and supported by your carrier, and review the app’s behavior.
- For business or API texts, use an encoding-aware counter: A visible-character count alone may not reflect encoded segments. Check your provider’s documented message maximums as well.
What message length is safest for delivery?
There is no one length that guarantees delivery across every carrier and device. For its Azure Communication Services SMS context, Microsoft recommends keeping messages to 320 characters and reducing accents “to ensure maximum delivery”; that is service guidance, not a universal SMS limit or guarantee. Microsoft’s character and rate limits page also cautions that carriers and devices may handle long messages differently. For a personal text, concise wording and ordinary GSM-7 characters can reduce segmentation surprises; for a business message, follow the provider’s specific encoding and length guidance.
