How Businesses Use Green Marketing—and How to Make Claims Credible

Businesses use green marketing to describe environmental attributes of products, packaging, services, or operations. The practice is credible only when the claim is specific, supported by evidence, and clear about what it covers: calling something “eco-friendly” does not establish that it performs better for the environment.

What green marketing means in practice

Green marketing is the communication of environmental attributes through advertising, product packaging, websites, labels, and other marketing materials. A company might describe a material, explain a recycling option, compare a product’s packaging with an earlier version, or display a certification seal.

The marketing message is not the environmental performance itself. A claim can be accurate about one component yet leave consumers with a broader impression about the whole product or company. Businesses need to consider both the words they use and the likely message consumers take from them.

How businesses use green marketing

Describe materials and product components

A company can identify recycled or renewable material in a product or package. The claim should make clear which material or component it covers and, where relevant, what proportion it represents. The FTC says recycled-content claims should concern materials recovered or diverted from the waste stream during manufacturing or after consumer use; a claim about only part of a product should be qualified. Explain recycling and composting

Marketing can tell buyers whether an item is recyclable or compostable, but the claim should reflect how and where it can actually be processed. A product that can be handled only at limited facilities may need a clear qualification rather than an unqualified promise. Compostability claims also need qualification when appropriate facilities are not available to a substantial majority of consumers. FTC Green Guides summary.

Communicate energy and carbon attributes

Businesses may make claims about renewable energy or carbon offsets. They should identify the basis for a renewable-energy claim and support offset claims with reliable scientific evidence and appropriate accounting. An offset claim should not imply compensation for an activity that is already required by law. FTC Green Guides summary.

Compare a product or process with an alternative

A company may claim that a package uses less material or that a product has a smaller specified impact than an earlier version. Such comparisons need a clear reference point and a stated basis. The FTC advises that source-reduction claims clearly identify the amount reduced and the basis for comparison. FTC Green Guides summary.

Use certifications and seals

A certification seal can communicate that a product or attribute meets a defined standard. It can also imply a broader environmental benefit, so the advertiser should explain what the seal represents and substantiate its own express and implied claims. Relevant material connections behind a seal may need disclosure. Certification does not shift the advertiser’s responsibility for the overall message. FTC Green Guides summary.

What makes an environmental claim credible?

The FTC’s Green Guides explain how consumers may interpret common environmental claims, what marketers should substantiate, and when claims may need qualification. The FTC says environmental claims should be supported by competent and reliable scientific evidence. These are guidance for applying truth-in-advertising principles, not a product certification scheme or a guarantee that following an example ensures compliance. FTC Green Guides topic page and FTC Environmental Marketing.

  • Specificity: Name the environmental benefit rather than relying on a sweeping label.
  • Evidence: Keep reliable scientific or operational support for the express claim and the message it implies.
  • Scope: State whether the claim applies to the product, a component, its packaging, a facility, or company operations.
  • Qualifications: Make limitations, conditions, and relevant access constraints clear and prominent.
  • Comparisons: Identify what the product is compared with and how the difference was determined.
  • Assurance: For a seal, clarify what it certifies, who is behind it, and whether relevant connections should be disclosed.

Why broad “green” claims are risky

Words such as “green” and “eco-friendly,” when used without qualification, can suggest an overall environmental benefit that is difficult or impossible to substantiate. The FTC advises marketers to identify specific benefits and qualify claims clearly and prominently instead of leaving consumers to infer a general advantage. FTC Green Guides topic page.

For example, a statement about recycled packaging should not be presented in a way that implies the product itself is made from recycled material. A claim about one improvement should not suggest that every environmental impact has been addressed. The wording, placement, images, and seals can all affect the impression conveyed.

FTC guidance and the EU policy context

United States

The FTC first issued the Green Guides in 1992 and revised them in 1996, 1998, and 2012; 2012 is the most recent revision identified by the agency’s topic page. The Guides discuss common claims and how to apply U.S. truth-in-advertising principles to them. FTC Green Guides topic page.

The FTC’s December 2022 discussion notes that in 2012 the agency declined to issue guidance on “sustainable” claims because it lacked enough evidence about consumer perception. That historical decision is not a declaration that every use of “sustainable” is safe. FTC, December 28, 2022.

European Union

The European Commission describes a policy effort, in the context of the European Green Deal and circular economy, to have companies substantiate environmental claims using robust, science-based, verifiable methods. This is high-level EU policy context, not a complete comparison of U.S. and EU requirements or a statement of the rules applicable to every claim in every jurisdiction. A practical review before publishing a claim

  1. Write down the exact claim and likely takeaway. Assess what a reasonable consumer might infer from the full presentation, not just the literal wording.
  2. Define the claim’s scope. Specify the product, packaging, component, process, location, or period the statement concerns.
  3. Match evidence to the wording. Confirm that the evidence supports both the stated benefit and any broader implied message.
  4. Add necessary context. State relevant proportions, conditions, facility availability, comparison baselines, and other limitations clearly and prominently.
  5. Check seals and comparisons separately. Verify what a seal actually covers and disclose relevant connections; for a comparison, identify the reference product or baseline and measurement basis.
  6. Review the claim in its actual placement. Check packaging, imagery, nearby copy, and labels together, since the overall presentation can broaden the message.

Recyclability has a specific FTC availability threshold

Under the FTC Green Guides, a recyclable claim should be qualified if appropriate facilities are unavailable to at least 60 percent of consumers or communities where the product is sold. This is a specific threshold in FTC guidance for recyclability claims, not a universal global rule. Businesses should not apply it as a substitute for checking the applicable requirements and local recycling access in other jurisdictions. FTC Green Guides summary.
