Researchers report a tattoo ink that can switch visually between near-colorless and magenta: visible light deactivates its color, while ultraviolet (UV) light activates it. The pigment stays in the skin, so this is concealment—not tattoo removal. A small 2026 human pilot offers early evidence, not proof of broad long-term safety or routine availability.
How the light-responsive ink works
The study describes Magic Ink as a photochromic intradermal ink. Its pigments use diarylethene compounds embedded in medical-grade PMMA particles. Different light conditions change the pigments’ color state: visible light deactivates the color, and UV light activates it. The ink remains in the skin in either state.

In laboratory characterization, the authors reported that UV activation produced more than 90% of maximum coloration within seconds and that switching persisted over thousands of cycles in preclinical tests. These are test results outside the small human follow-up; they do not establish how quickly or consistently the effect would work for every person.

The paired study enrolled 11 participants. Each received a Magic Ink tattoo and a conventional commercial-ink control tattoo at matched sites. Researchers assessed healing at days 7 and 21, collected participant symptom reports through day 21, and reviewed photographs over five months. They observed no adverse events in either group and reported no significant differences in dermatologist assessments or participant-reported pain, redness, and itch. Visibility at one year
Seven participants submitted paired photos at 12 months. In those images, deactivated Magic Ink was nearly imperceptible, and UV activation made it more visible. The activated color was less saturated than the standard-ink control. The researchers used 365 nm UV light in this one-year analysis, but participants illuminated and photographed their own tattoos; the activation and imaging conditions were not verified or standardized.
What the safety results do—and do not—show
Zero adverse events were observed among 11 participants in each group during the reported clinical evaluation. That is reassuring as an initial observation, but it cannot establish that uncommon harms do not occur. The study’s confidence interval allows a true adverse-event rate as high as 24%.

The authors also identify limitations: participants were purposively recruited from one tattoo artist’s clientele, only one control ink was tested, and the study did not include instrumented skin measurements or histology. The one-year photo evidence was limited and uncontrolled. The authors further report that their sterilization workflow generated formaldehyde above the REACH limit and would need optimization for full European regulatory compliance. They characterize the findings as preliminary evidence warranting further evaluation.

“Light-responsive” can describe different effects. The mechanisms below are not interchangeable, and the studies did not test the same ink or outcome.

The 2026 paper identifies Magic Ink as a US commercial product supplied by HYPRSKN. That establishes a named product and company in the study; it does not confirm current purchasing availability, distribution, eligibility, or any referral program. Verify current status directly with the company rather than assuming the study guarantees access.
The study’s use of 365 nm UV light is a research condition, not a general consumer-use recommendation. It does not identify or endorse a particular lamp or flashlight, and it should not be taken as advice to expose skin to UV light.
