Ledger Investigates Wallet-Tampering Reports After $86 Million in Crypto Losses

Ledger is investigating reports of lost funds, while an on-chain analyst’s estimate puts reported crypto losses above $86 million. That figure is not a Ledger-confirmed total, and the reporting does not establish how the funds were taken. Wallet tampering is one possibility under investigation—not a confirmed cause.

What is known about the reported losses?

On October 9, 2026, Unchained reported that on-chain analyst Specter traced addresses said to have received funds from hundreds of wallets reportedly belonging to Ledger users. The reported outflows involved Ethereum, TRON and Bitcoin. Specter’s estimate was more than $86 million, but Unchained noted that the totals were unconfirmed and the posts did not establish the theft method. Unchained’s report does not provide a Ledger-verified victim count or final loss tally.

A separate October 9 report connected loss reports among Southeast Asian customers who bought through reseller CryptoBilis with Ledger’s investigation. It said Ledger had asked the reseller to pause sales and shipments. The available reporting does not establish that all addresses in Specter’s estimate belong to CryptoBilis customers, so the two groups should not be treated as the same. PrimeXBT’s report describes the reseller-related reports.

Does this mean Ledger devices were hacked?

No such conclusion is established in the cited reporting. It does not confirm that a Ledger hardware device was hacked, that a recovery phrase was extracted, or that a firmware vulnerability was involved. Nor does it determine whether the losses resulted from device tampering, exposure of a recovery phrase, malicious transaction signing, or another cause. Those are possibilities, not confirmed explanations.

What should CryptoBilis buyers do?

PrimeXBT reported different precautions depending on whether a buyer had initialized the device. Because the reporting is not an official Ledger notice and the cause remains unknown, check Ledger’s current support guidance before handling a device or moving funds.

  • Device not yet set up: PrimeXBT reported that buyers should delay setup.
  • Device already set up: PrimeXBT reported that buyers should consider moving assets to a new signer using a newly generated recovery phrase.

Do not treat a new device by itself as a recovery of funds already stolen. Any migration should follow current official instructions, and a new recovery phrase should be generated securely rather than copied from an existing one.

Is this connected to Ledger’s 2023 Connect Kit incident?

There is no evidence in the cited reporting that the October 2026 reports have the same cause as the December 2023 Connect Kit exploit. In its December 14, 2023 account, Ledger described a compromised former employee’s NPMJS account and malicious package versions 1.1.5, 1.1.6 and 1.1.7. Ledger said the code used a rogue WalletConnect project to reroute funds and that a genuine fixed version was deployed after discovery. That was a JavaScript software-distribution incident; it is historical context, not proof of hardware tampering in the current reports.
